I don't know much about this whole scandal, but apparently John Green helped cover up cases of his friends/acquaintances sexually abusing members of the "Nerdfighter" fanbase. More on that here I guess.

Yeah, that would never hold up in court. There's a term for making the younger individual in that kind of relationship feel that there's nothing insidious going on, it's called 'grooming'.

I don't really want to go looking for the references as its an unsavoury subject but i remember when i was at uni we did a case study on various 'ethical' jurisprudence issues and our group got the concept of 'consent'.
I won't bore you all with the finer details about the interplay between capacity to consent and right to independence however I think it would be interesting to point out something in the arguements coming from kayla and friends on the subject.
The first point is that the main excuse is that there is only 3 years between them- they ignore that the reason that we restrict the ability of minors to consent is not that their bodies are incapable but that their minds are less mature and so the elder partner will always hold a dominant position which warps the normal balance of power between the partners. The issue is not that she is 19, its that she is an adult. I think we've discussed this already and only mention it for completeness.
The second arguement is 'but they're in love' or 'but she's not abusive' or 'their happy tho' these arguements rest on the foundation of sand that is our first post however what i wanted to highlight was that this is, to anyone who has ever had the misfortune of encountering a pedo defending themselves exactly the arguement pedophiles have been trying to argue for years. I'm not just talking about intellectuals and academics posing controversies for publicity or swiftesque satire ment to shock but actual convicted pedophiles. If you have the stomach read

They will criticize john green being to friendly with his fans but not their friend for fucking a minor. The death threats and suicide baiting. We see the same denial and dissonance in the scarlet rose thread. She has a lot in common with moderniceirlorwhatev and i think we should keep a closer eye on mod as its from her many of the more stupid/disgusting comments have come and she has been pretty constant in maintaining the hugbox.
Their condescending morally superior tone while advancing the arguements of pedophiles and racists is as amusing as it is obnoxious and only makes their delusions all the funnier!

I mean, when I was 16, if a 19 year old was interested in me and said all these nice things and would drive me places, I would say the same thing about how I'm mature like he tells me I am! (Because if I am not that must mean all the nice things he said are not true too). When you are 16 you are impressionable and you want someone to love you, ALSO there is the "I have a older boyfriend" thing that makes you look mature/desirable/experienced etc. when in reality you are a victim & are being manipulated.
It doesn't really matter if You are three years apart or a year apart it's illegal. Also maybe Kayla is defending them because she is partly responsible and if she says that it's bad she's expressing guilt, which would be worse for her... If it ever went to court I mean?
