Icelandic Saga.
If that doesn't proof that you can adapt a story to a different genre and retain it's qualities, I don't know what is.
Of course, you'll have to adapt it smartly and you'll have to change a few things (after all, there is a difference between how a spacebattle goes and how vikings would do battle), but story-wise it only changes very little, the central theme of the conflict remains.
