I’ve never watched an episode of Star Trek in my life but would you say that it’s worth someone getting into now? Half of this thread seems devoted to complaining about the current state of Star Trek, but I like older TV shows and science fiction so it seems like it might be something I’d like. I have no idea which series are good and which aren’t I just know there’s like a 60 year backlog of this stuff.
Ditto what most people said so far...start with all the original series...skip all of season 1 of next gen...but dont watch enterprise

Taste may vary, but old treks are watchable and enjoyable. Some enjoy DS9 more than TNG, some like Voyager, most people like TOS. It's a matter of preference, but they all are ok:

TOS (plus six movies)
TNG (plus four movies)
DS9
VOY
ENT

These all belong to the same continuity. The others were remakes or reboots or some time fuckup ruining the timeline. If you watch the JJ movies, you can survive them if you ignore they have anything to do with the main timeline and just enjoy them as some noncanon fic.

Discovery, Picard, and Lower Decks should be put out with the trash and never be seen or talked about again, ever.

I had heard it was a phone call. Which would make sense. Or maybe MLK wrote her a fan letter.

It's not that farfetched of a story either way. I think Worf speaks wisdom on this matter.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=D2hTE-7Qz4YNichelle and MLK were both legends.
This made me wonder what if there was a job in some division of Starfleet that had people witness historic events so there could be zero room for theory or conspiracy theory on things that had happened in their understanding of history, then whoever was observing just fucked up for anything there is a big conspiracy on (i.e. 9/11, JFK assasination, WW2).

The order I went was TNG-DS9-VOY-ENT and worked in TOS sporadically between the first two. I only started watching a few years ago and had no idea on anything as well but TNG was a good entry point for me.

This just in: only white men can have problems with the new Star Trek shows now.

If TNG was made today you would have Picard say "have sex, incel" to Barclay as the rest of the bridge crew start laughing for 5 minutes. They would probably have one line of dialogue as a follow up, saying that he ended up killing himself and Troi would reply "good riddance".

Bold of you to assume they wouldn't make Barclay a villain.

Yes...TOS all of it, also the cartoon,.it's pretty cheesy but also trippy, I personally liked most of the movies up until first contact, the ones after kinda sucked. The first three seasons of TNG for sure and a bunch of the later ones, most of DS9, though i hated it when i was younger, I came to appreciate it later, some episodes of Voyager. A lot of them are trash, but the overarching storyline is mostly good and there is some good ones in there for sure, i didn't regret watching it.. Enterprise is terrible. The first movie reboot was terrible. Never watched any more after that. The Orville is actually not terrible, if you can stomach Seth macfarlane it actually felt more like star trek than a lot of later star trek.

It's a franchise with a lot of ups and downs. The ups are worth a lot of the downs though. Except enterprise and post Abrams shit....

It could definitely still happen. Dwight Schultz appears to still be at least semi-active.
Who am I kidding? He's too far to the political right. They'd give him the Icheb treatment and recast the character only to brutally kill him off.

Shatner and Koenig aired out their gricences 20 years ago on tv. Walter did resent being shoved aside for Shatner getting more lines...but Walter also admitted he never spoke up. Shatner also said he would have "cut the shit out..." if Walter actually asked him back then.
I mean though come on this is William Shatner. If Walter Koenig had said hey stop being a line hog asshole, Shatner back then wouldn't have folded so easy no matter what he said decades after the fact when maybe he felt bad. It's easy to maybe feel bad when you won a long time ago and nothing can change that win. The man is awesome but he was and is addicted to competition and winning.

God, if you thought the current year political shit was bad before, imagine how bad it’s gonna be when they’re ACTUALLY IN CURRENT YEAR.

True..even by Shatner's own admission, he was about being top dog. However, Koneig himself also admited he never spoke up about it at all- rather he clung onto a resentment for decades instead of direclty confronting Shatner on it. ...until very recently.

I highly reccomend reading Shatner's biographies, he's self aware of how big a douche he was.

The moment they got in some SUV and made some quip about not knowing how to drive I couldn't believe it. Not even going to bother with complaining that by 2021 trek history and real history have diverged a good bit, at this point I think I'm rooting for this to be as big of a shitshow as possible. I hope we get a big sponsored shot of the Ford logo on that SUV. I hope that the bad guy is literally DRUMPF. Full on lez out between 7 and Raffi and they won't stop talking about "you know back then (or wait I guess now!!!!!) everyone was BIGOTS against the LGBTQ+ community! I'm so glad the Federation gives us equal rights!" and they look straight at the camera. Maybe even have a clearly ADR'd line about abortion in there. Sword romulan has a scene where he decapitates 100 bad guys and there's blood flying everywhere. Picard gets caught jerking off. Just fuck my shit up
