I have to defer to Picard's wisdom. The first duty of every Starfleet officer is to the truth. The truth is Nichols was a working actress and one of Roddenberry's mistresses. When that gig ended, her career did not continue along a spectacular trajectory. So a few years later, she made up or "enhanced" about getting a role on Broadway and MLK's influence getting her to stay on Star Trek. That lie kept growing as long as she told it.
 
I'm going to cut her some slack. I went to several Trek conventions in the early 90s. They plop these people out on stage for god knows how long and they have to say something to fill all that time. I'm pretty sure most guests have exaggerated events for entertainment value or completely made stories up. This same thing happens on late-night talk shows.
 
The version I heard was that she was at a party or something and somebody wanted to introduce her to a fan. She apparently thought the fan was going to be a child, but it ended up being MLK.

It does kind of seem like a story that could have grown over the years, if not totally fabricated.

The story is 100% true. MLK jr even begged Ms. Nichols not to quit the show which she hinted at doing. He told her that her presence on the bridge shows that she is qualifed for the job... for her experience and education - not for the color of her skin.

Today's "Trek" is the cast and written for the exact opposite; you're on the ship because of your skin color, gender and sexaality. Not because you're good at your position. But the "woke" mob honestly believes otherwise.

I've heard this exact story, have never confirmed it in any way. One repeated thing said about Shatner was he complained a lot about Nichols getting lines. This is sometimes used to portray him as a racist, but he actually didn't give a shit about the race of other bridge character actors getting lines, he was just always really mad that they weren't HIM.

He could sort of grasp that he couldn't have ALL the lines, but the more other people got, the madder he got.

Shatner demanded that Uhura kiss Kirk rather than Spock in "Plato's Stepchildren". He'd be a pretty weird kind of racist if he got angry at not being allowed to kiss a black woman.

This is indeed a great story. I liked it from the first time that I heard it, and I'd be lying if I said that I didn't *want* it to be true. Also I never claimed that it *wasn't* true... But it is apparently historical fact that Nichelle Nichols has told this story multiple times over the years, in multiple different ways that are not entirely compatible with each other. As others have already said here, this game of telephone can happen even with genuinely *true* stories. As of right now, I still choose to believe that this story has at least *some* basis in fact. I hope that doesn't change at any point in the future...

Also shatner starred in a low budget anti secregation film in the early 60's back when the subject wasn't trendy.

Shatner and Koenig aired out their gricences 20 years ago on tv. Walter did resent being shoved aside for Shatner getting more lines...but Walter also admitted he never spoke up. Shatner also said he would have "cut the shit out..." if Walter actually asked him back then.
 
I find Nicholls' story believable because TOS cast was very peculiar back then and I can see someone who fought for real equal rights would ask her to stay in a unique role at the time. This was a time when real representation was positive for real oppressed groups.

And it's due to this story and many similar that the alleged absence of minorities on tv nowadays is insulting.

Humans have no idea how bad it really is. No one on Q'onoS knows what the fuck raktajino or firewine is. Klingon food is disgusting. Literally the worst parts to eat of any animal. Makes sense because Klingons are the humanoid species closest to animals. They make disgusting noises when they eat, slurp everything, men in the streets lift their fucking spinal armor over their sweaty stomachs while laughing and chewing with their mouths full of food. Like what kind of idiot decided a knife and your hands is the most practical way to eat live worms. Starving Bajoran comfort women who get their protein from Cardassian dicks have a better diet than the average Klingon.

Most people would agree that Sisko was the most nuanced role as a Star Trek captain, and that Avery Brooks is one of the best actors ever in Star Trek. But DS9 did all the Discovery shit before Discovery did. Also, most people would agree that Archer was the worst even tho Scott Bakula is a very good actor.

I'm just now on season 2 of DS9 and while I like the Sisko character Patrick Stewart is a damn good actor... Unless you're being sarcastic, I don't know much about Star Trek in-jokes

I’ve never watched an episode of Star Trek in my life but would you say that it’s worth someone getting into now? Half of this thread seems devoted to complaining about the current state of Star Trek, but I like older TV shows and science fiction so it seems like it might be something I’d like. I have no idea which series are good and which aren’t I just know there’s like a 60 year backlog of this stuff.

Any Star Trek made before the year 2000 is at least okay. It's JJ Trek and afterwards does it become outright bad to garbage.

First two seasons of TOS are great. As for the movies, 2, 3, 4, 6 with the original cast, and just First Contact with the TNG crew. Star Trek TNG seasons 3 thru 6 are God tier TV, with the only real key episode from Season 2 being "Q Who". DS9 seasons 2 thru 6 are the best of that series. If you're watching all this, the only key episode of TAS (the 70s cartoon) is "Yesteryear." I do advocate watching all of TNG. I will say that I think season 7 overall is worse than season 1, with season 2 possibly being the worst.

If you like TNG and DS9 you may as well go thru with watching VOY, it's really not that bad. I'm also someone who prefers the first 2 seasons of ENT to the last 2. If you really, really want more Star Trek after that, watch the animated series and the other movies, as well as season 3 of TOS.

I *like* Lower Decks well enough and I think Star Trek Beyond is the best of the movies with that cast of actors. If you really really like TNG watch The Orville, as it's basically Seth MacFarlane's TNG fanfic.

Anything from The Original Series to Enterprise (including movies) is watchable (though the quality is debatable).
