That was kind of the appeal though. TOS especially was like listening to grandpa tell WW2 stories, or reading one of those old books filled with black and white photos of old battleships. Is that really a picture of the USS Iowa? I have no fucking clue, still looks badass. (Funnily enough this did happen in Star Trek with the aircraft carrier USS Ranger, claimed to be the Big E herself in Voyage Home). Now, of course, TOS limited the number and specifications of Starships and the battle scenes because of both their limited budget and their special effects at the time, but the end result was pretty unique.
Yeah a lot of the TOS staples "senSORE readings, captain" and stuff are really just dodges to avoid effects shots, but it works.

I dunno if this has come up in the thread already, but I sat down and watched Star Trek Renegades recently.

I avoided this for years thinking it looked like edgy trash. I dunno if years of JJ Trek and Discovery have made me more sympathetic to it, but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. There's a lot of very un-Trek moments and concepts, but, whatever, its been like ten years since Enterprise pulled Trek into a more grimdark climate. Seems to me they should have just put Tim Russ in charge of Discovery; I notice there are a lot of similarities with the show being darker, more action oriented, Starfleet is more morally ambiguous, a female protagonist, etc. It would definitely rub hardcore TNG fans the wrong way but otherwise it strikes me as the right way to do a Star Trek concept updated for the modern age.

Edit: Also occured to me that I'd rather not spark off a firestorm of discussion on Trek fan films, so I want to clarify that I brought up Renegades because it has such a huge amount of involvement from the actors and I think a few of the writers from various shows. Of any "fan" production, its probably the closest to feeling like an actual episode of Star Trek rather than fans of the show LARPing. There's some fan productions out there that I liked, but I feel like they'd be a big distraction from this thread.

Axanar, the pseudo documentary, is better than the first two nu Trek films.

Star Trek Beyond is, dare I say it, kino

Any time I see the title Star Trek Beyond it makes me think of Madness. Somebody should do a cover of the TOS theme in the style of One Step Beyond.

The deal for all Star Trek to be under roof is going to be announced this week, maybe today.

But essentially CBS and Viacom will re-merge to become the original Viacom.

Not sure how it’ll definitely effect Star Trek since CBS’s acting CEO is expected to run CBS Networks, where all Star Trek shows are at, and Viacom CEO Bob Bakish is expected to run the combined company.

If history is any indicator it's even money that we'll see a giant panic and some executive hitting the reboot everything possible button

Picard is in a Dark Phoenix situation now where it'd be difficult to cancel due to the minimal investment required by the new corporation vs. its returns, but then the damage it could continue to do to the brand if they do release it.

Most people seem to like it but the implication that characters like Picard, and the Federation as a whole, only get to act morally because these Mission Impossible LARPers are running gay ops off screen kinda ruins it for me.
In canon, children are screened for anti-social behaviors from birth and are sent to re-education centers for a "better fit" within the Federation.

Is that code for lobotomies?
in TOS they cured all crazy people except for the dozen on that one planet for crazy people
