Star Trek V is one of my favorite Trek movies. The story was basically a longer TOS episode. I like that level of friendship that they build throughout the years and it's also one of the rare movies with a cast of old actors.

It also gave us one of the most emotional powerful scenes in Star Trek.

So, what the hell was the alien in the center of the Galaxy? Why does Sarek have a human fetish when he could have had a Vulcanian princess waifu? Why does the UFP ambassador on Nimbus III smoke cigs?

Just jumping into the topic, I feel like one of the RLM boys when it comes to Trek. Lorca did nothing wrong and was right about the fall of the Empire, btw

My hypothesis for the Sha Ka Ree alien was that he was the physical manifestation of the pain that Sybok removed from people. That's why Sybok said "This is my arrogance, my vanity!" when they realized it was an entity of pure hatred.

You could feel how much the writers despised the character in his final episode (and how most of the stuff that happened in that episode made no sense).

One of the more entertaining trek books explained that and some of the other weaker trek stories as all being Q's fault when he was hanging around the guardian of forever.

Like Chuck pointed out, one of the characters WHO EATS PEOPLE and does other evil is given another chance while Lorca is killed for.... lying to our heroes?

Not to mention the fact that just because he was born in Somalia, doesn't mean he was actually Somalian. Geordie's parents were both StarFleet officers, so they were probably just stationed there.

I mean, the person in that video is kind of taking away the opposite of what the intended message was. It didn't matter if Geordi was from Mogadishu, London, or Alpha Centauri because religion and multiculturalism had been largely obliterated among humans. It was a very American vision of 24th Century humans as a melting pot. Even if he were native to Somalia, it would have no influence on his "identity" beyond his parents cooking up some fry bread or camel stir fry once in a while.

Plus it would be a little silly for every black person in Starfleet to be African-American.

Star Trek TMP is a great looking film. The sets and special effects look outstanding. The musical score is also terrific

That said, I find the film to be drag. I've talked to fans that defend it as being closest to the feel of the old show and to a point that is true, but in a more long and drawn out way.

Star Trek has usually been at it's best when it is people talking and debating. That's part of what made the show and the franchise work. However, it only works if they are talking about things that are actually interesting. None of the topic, the reveal at the end, or even the character interactions are that interesting.

I don't care about V'ger, I don't care about Deckard or the bald lady, and Kirk, Spock, and McCoy not being on the same page for most of the film took me out of it too.

I also wasn't a fan of them trying to hide that the actors has aged. It made it feel less genuine.

And this film also went a little too far to glorify the special effects shots. Like I said, they look great but they also really drag the pacing of the film down when they linger on the Enterprise for about 40 seconds too long.

Compare that to Wrath of Khan where age, death, rebirth, and revenge were front and center in the film. Even the discussion Kirk, Spock, and Bones talking about Genesis felt more at home with Star Trek and was at least interesting to listen too.

Fun little fact here about Star Trek TMP. It was originally intended to be the pilot episode for a new Star Trek series. That might be why it feels like it drags so much, it was originally written to be a 1 hour episode but was stretched into a 2 hour film.

I dunno, man... the idea of a waifu who goes into heat and just NEEDS to be fucked hard is pretty compelling.... right until you realize that it comes at a cost of 7 years of living with a frigid bitch between fuck sessions.

ST:TOS (and much of what followed) is liberal, but it's the liberalism of someone born in 1921 who grew up during the Depression.

I put Final Frontier in the same category as Voyager (though I think Voyager was much better overall for all its flaws) in that it had good concepts and endearing characters but shit execution.

Well, I think Tarantino's love for Trek begins and ends with TOS. The only way to kinda do that is to work with the Kelvin nonsense.

But, that has to be compatible with whatever Trek is, moving forward. It all sounds confusing....
