I see a bunch of people here sucking "Conspiracy" 's proverbial cock, and though I haven't made it there yet in my current re-watch, I will say that it is easily one of the better season 1 episodes...

I've heard from multiple sources that the insects in conspiracy were originally meant to be what became the borg. Any thoughts as to whether or not the show runners made the right choice to change that?
A slight mixup. They were debating whether to bring back the bluegill but ultimately decided not to.

When they later started making the borg, there was talk about them initially be insects but it was too expensive for a TV budget so they went with the cyborg gimp outfits instead. (when in doubt, 99% of the time in Trek the answer to "why didn't they..." is "budget")

Probably for the best because if they had went with insects, then they could never assimilated people, so no Locutus or Seven.

Let's not pretend like there wouldn't be sexy insect ladies if it came to that.

I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this, but CBS and Viacom (Paramount's parent company) are in talks to merge back.

I'm aware of the license dispute between CBS and Paramount over the film rights, but I imagine this would be forgotten since all rights will be under one roof.

That would be the ideal situation, Paramount is completely fucked and it's only a matter of time before somebody takes over.
Les Moonves is out and Viacom CEO Bob Bakish is favored to run the merged company if the deal is made and goes through. I’m not sure what will the combined company look liked. I would imagine Paramount’s current TV unit will merge with CBS’s (which itself is the original Paramount TV unit prior to the split in 2006).

CBS’s streaming service would benefit from Paramount’s library, which has all the ST movies. The library would help their service grow more subscribers.

This is essential if they want to be competitive. The worst thing about these services is either a lack of choice, or movies disappearing once the licencing deal runs out. Paramount's catalogue is huge and ideally if permanently available would draw in film fans who don't care enough about any of CBS's current content to even notice the service otherwise.

Holy shit, it would be an amazing opportunity for them if they have Paramount’s entire filmography. You got the Godfather, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, SpongeBob Squarepants, Forrest Gump, Titanic, Top Gun, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, and Transformers in a streaming service. For a combined CBS-Viacom merger, it would bring endless success for a streaming service.

What I would imagine could happen though is seeing either CBS buying Lionsgate for Starz, and Viacom buying MGM (another huge library). Having MGM’s and Lionsgate’s library with Paramount’s would help CBS in the long run.

Okay so here's something I would like to know; after I finish TOS I want to start TNG, but I've been hearing horror stories about the first season. Should I skip the first season and go straight to the second season or should I grin and bear the first season?

It can be rough but you'll miss out on fully functional and head explosions if you do.

The first season of TNG is mostly not very good but there's some recurring characters that are important later and one or two good episodes. If you made it through season 3 of TOS it's at least better than that.

No, just live through it. It's not that bad, at least after the first few episodes, and introduces a lot of the threads that go through the rest of the series.

Point taken. Guess I will watch that first season when I get to it.

I think it's overblown, it's got some of Gene's autism but there are some very good episodes (First Episode is still one of my favorites).

How about we save you the trouble and just tell you the episodes to catch?
  1. Encounter at Farpoint parts 1 & 2 (you do absolutely need to watch this one)
  2. Where No One Has Gone Before (sets up a character who will return twice later)
  3. The Battle (you can skip, but some background on Picard)
  4. Hide and Q (linked to #1)
  5. Haven (introduction of another reoccurring character - also skippable)
  6. The Big Goodbye (same)
  7. Datalore (the only other must see - reoccurring character & Data backstory)
  8. 11001001 (call back to this one in the future)
  9. Skin of Evil (main character dies)
If you want to enjoy the one good plot line of S1, you can watch "Coming of Age" & "Conspiracy" too. Otherwise I'd say there's only 3 in that season you need to see.

You could also just watch the SFDebris reviews of the episodes (here's #1) and see if any of those intrigue you. Otherwise his suffering is your gain.

Never skip Star Trek episodes. It's about the characters and even bad or mediocre episodes will usually have good character moments or show you something interesting about the universe. The more you skip the more you lessen your experience because you'll develop a watered-down frame of reference compared to someone who watches to show properly.

The first two-ish seasons of TNG are a right of passage, if you cant handle it at its worst then you don't deserve it at its best.

Also, if you already watched all of TOS, bad TNG is usually on the same level of quality as the bad episodes of that series. Truthfully, season one in particular feels like a reconfigured season 5 of TOS.

Yeah, if you follow that list you're going to miss a lot of cool things, like the introduction of the Ferengi.

Only episode you should skip is Shades of Grey, the clip show episode. Oh, and if the characters ever go to Risa. Risa is the biggest cocktease planet in the universe. Characters will talk about how great it is endlessly, but nothing interesting ever happens on Risa. Just a bunch of ladies with giant 80s perms having sex with skeevy bearded officers.

Risa is full of surprises.

TUCKER: What about that one?
REED: Now I know you've been cooped up on a starship for too long.
TUCKER: What's wrong with her?
REED: Well, nothing, I suppose. I just wouldn't know which eyes to look into. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Now, she's interesting.
TUCKER: I don't think she is the right pronoun, but if you think it's worth the risk.
(He waves at whoever and points at Reed.)
REED: I don't know. Maybe I should have brought my scanner with me.
TUCKER: That's a she.
