What the hell is with these back to back hardcore feels episodes? Once More Unto the Breach and then The Siege of AR-558. That last one was really heavy, liked it a lot. Season 7 is great so far, I'm really surprised.

It's always disheartening to see Starfleet personnel in combat situations, because they are clearly not made for that shit. And I always slightly cringe when I see a Starfleet ship explode in the big battle scenes. I'm assuming the Galaxy-class ships at least evacuated their kindergartens and dolphin tanks before battle, but that's still a lot of scientists and engineers going down with each ship who only wanted to see the galaxy. Pretty much every other faction is a lot more military-minded in their organization, so I don't feel as bad for their crews when their ships are destroyed.

The DS9 baseball episode is awesome. Though was it the inspiration for making the Vulcans total assholes in Enterprise? I still wonder why they went that route, since it pissed off so many fans that they had to retcon it with a three parter in its last season.

The last two seasons of DS9 are probably my favorite Trek seasons. DS9 doesn't have all that many notable stand alone episodes, TNG is superior in that regard, but when it comes to story arcs, DS9 is by far the best. It's also the most modern, since all of television is serial nowadays.

I saw an episode of Enterprise once where a MACO was using good trigger discipline and I fell outta my chair.

They were never mentioned on screen, but an earlier draft of a TNG episode and various side material suggest that the Enterprise-D has dolphins on board. I think for navigational and first contact purposes. I always thought that was a cute idea.

It was mentioned in Yesterday's Enterprise in a comm announcement paging someone to Cetacean Ops.

I went over to Memory Alpha and found another mention

Dolphins were present aboard the Enterprise-D in some capacity. In 2368, Geordi La Forge took the Ferengi Par Lenor to see the dolphins in order to keep him from disturbing Kriosian Ambassador Briam. (TNG: "The Perfect Mate") The dolphins may have been in the aquatics lab. (TNG: "Genesis")

I was going to make some joke about the dolphins dying along with Picard's pet fish, but apparently his fish survived somehow, I don't remember that.
Seriously though I didn't know there were dolphins on board either. That's hilarious.
I always liked that Patrick Stewart protested people having pets in the future.

I've got some bad news for you.

When asked if Livingston had survived the crash in Generations, writer Ronald D. Mooresuggested that the fish was eaten by Data's cat Spot by commenting "Spot had to eat something in those long hours before Data found him." (AOL chat, 1998)

Cetacean Ops is mostly a gag referencing Gunbuster, that's why it's staffed by Takaya's Whales. But yeah it started as a gag in the background and they occasionally made reference to them on-screen, even if they never appeared. I think they did some designs for how it would look for STO.

I did not know that. Cool info.

Interesting, I thought they were referencing Star Trek IV.

Vic Fontaine episodes are really comfy. I really like him a lot.
Thought it was kind of weird during Badda-Bing Badda-Bing how Sisko got so assblasted that people were daring to have fun in a fictional 1960's holosuite program though. "Muh people" is honestly the last thing I expected from a Starfleet officer, felt very weird hearing it in Star Trek.

Civil rights has always been a passion of Avery Brooks, and he is a bit..... Avery Brooks. I saw it as just him wanting to get a little social commentary.
I also dug Vic Fontaine. The idea of a self aware hologram of a 60's lounge singer was one of their better ideas. If you like the style, you should check out James Darren's albums.

At least everybody called out him on being a no fun asshole over it.

The local jazz station plays some of his stuff. One time I heard the jock mention "oh hey he was in Star Trek blahblahblah".
But yeah, on paper shoehorning in a Vegas crooner based on the then-hot trend should have been the worst thing since the Space Hippies, but they made it work a lot better than it had any right to be.
