Yeah, I've always found the "Roddenberry's vision is impossible to write for!!!" to be greatly exaggerated. Like really, Kirk and Bones didn't come off as humans? Characters in TNG season 1 were still humans.

He'd meant for humanity to have grown past the problems bothering them in those days, in these days. He didn't want the ship to be filled with petty "unenlightened" drama, but I feel people run with that and take it autistically. I think he just meant that people were enlightened enough to be able to talk problems out, understand each other.

A great contrast is how Picard doesn't let anyone give up on Barklay, vs that Short Trek where the chick is like "He was an idiot. Conversation over." Roddenberry's ideals of behaviour vs modern ideals... sadly.
I think people tend to conflate two different issues - Roddenberry's diktats on how it was acceptable for 24th century humans to behave, and the fact that a lot of Voyager and Enterprise suffered from really bland characterization and dialog.

Yes, Roddenberry's ideals made it harder to write for the characters, but it clearly wasn't an insurmountable problem, as TNG and DS9 did just fine in the characterization department. I think the real problem was that all the TNG writers who were actually talented went to work on DS9, and when that show ended they dispersed to work on various other franchises, meaning that aside from a couple of halfway decent TNG writers that they kept hold of, Voyager and Enterprise ended up written largely by hired gun writers with no real affinity for the franchise - and by the time Manny Coto managed to get in a high-up enough place to bring in writers who actually knew their Trek, it was too late.

So yeah, Voyager and early Enterprise ironically suffered from a similar problem to the current batch of Trek shows; it's just that changes in the television landscape have meant that instead of writers being hired for their ability to deliver 45 minutes of blandly inoffensive crap that can be filmed quickly and cheaply, they're being hired for their ability to deliver 40-50 minutes of SocJus messaging, explosion-filled crap that subverts expectations along the way.

Roxann Dawson, they did their best to hide it on screen.
She's so heavily pregnant in S4, it's a joke. Isn’t it funny how the camera favors close-ups of B’Elanna rather than long shots and she's sporting a lab coat these days? She also spends a great deal of time behind consoles.

Roxann Dawson and Nana Visitor too (a couple of times) and they did their best to hide it on screen.
IIRC Vistors' pregnancy was explained as an emergency transfer of Molly after and Keiko and Kira were in a shuttle accident. Voyager could have been creative about it too but I guess it's Voyager so..

I always kinda preferred what they did on Frasier with the actress that played Daphne - when she got pregnant, they just wrote in a story about how she was stressed out, over-eating and getting fat as fuck.

Might've been an easier explanation for Tilly on STD, really.

How many babies has Tilly eaten at this point?

I still personally believe that it makes more sense that she's some sort of gravitational anomaly.

It must have been the flavor of the day. At around the same time X-Files tried to carry on as normal with a VERY pregnant Scully.

The forces holding that button from popping must have been extraterrestrial.

Once again adding to Keiko's pile of misery. Poor Miles...
Keiko is way worse than even Winn.

I wonder if "O'Bien must suffer" spawned from Ira Steven Behr's hatred for straight white blue collar males.

Also, speaking of the pregnancy, anyone remember which episode where Keiko forces, or tries to force, Miles and Kira to take a romantic vacation together and the subplot is that Miles almost cheats on Keiko with Kira?

"It took three Cranes to lift her."

She eats gaseous anomalies between seasons.

EVER NOTICE HOW LIBS ARE ALL WEAK & FAT & GAY & POOR

Personally, I think people who have differing viewpoints from my own are fat, retarded. dipshits. Whereas those who agree with me (and by extension myself) are all 10/10 alpha Chads and Stacys.
Poor Miles...
