I bought Caves of Qud a year or two ago. It was cool, but it felt like a game that was too deep in early access to have an idea of what it was trying to be yet -- it was at that stage where it was still trying to be clever, creative, and cool without crashing first, before it started figuring out how to be playable or fun. I deleted it after a few games where I died in uninteresting and impossible-to-predict ways (like immediately running into extremely outleveled enemies who were given no indicator of being such), installed some other game that was successful at being fun, and forgot that Caves of Qud existed.
Sounds like it's developed since then, but it also sounds like a game that's improving despite its community, rather than thanks to it.
