Want to see a review of that soy-boy Spidey comic?

Shit, it is even worse than I imagined.

See, now while Soy-der Man's face does irritate me, what just totally drives me up the wall about this comic as well as so many new comics Marvel is cranking out is that there is absolutely no regard for basic comic composition.

Just look at all the empty dead space used on nearly every single page in this review. That's not a style- that's just being fucking lazy.

How many panels are just the head and shoulders of a character? How many times could a story be better told by having a character emote, by moving the "camera" around? And furthermore, what the fuck is up with these bizarre panel crops?

spidey01-jpg.457365

First two panels: what is this background? Is this a background? Are these just geomtric shapes? Oh, and you see that little dot in panel one? That's apparently supposed to be the focus? Are you fucking high?

Third panel: we glean nothing from looking at Dr. Strange's forehead; fourth panel. nothing from Strange's emotionless mouth. There is no movement between two characters, they are just STANDING THERE. This page tells me nothing except the artist is either waaay stretched for time or doesn't give a fuck.

Another part in the video review it looks like the comic had nearly THREE FUCKING PAGES OF THE SAME IDENTICAL PANEL just with minor variations. I get it- it's a valid technique, but NOT FOR THREE GODDAMN PAGES YOU FUCKING LAZY... fffttt... finding my center... there. Okay.

...I fucking hate what Marvel Comics has become. This comic goes for $3.99 apparently. This is completely unacceptable.

Though it's a bit old news, I found out that a comic writer I liked, Gerard Jones, has been caught with child pornography.
I got to meet him once when I was 14 (my sister and dad took me to my first comic con, Wizard World, as a surprise gift) and he was pretty nice. I told him how Freex (a comic he was writing at the time) was my favorite and he even mentioned me in one of the issues in an authors note (issue 14), said thanks and hoped I was still enjoying it.

So it's a disappointment to know this.

I'm sure you might've heard of the new Super Freaks comic and no, it has nothing to do with Rick James. One thing that has annoyed me is that while there are exceptions like the Blob, Big Bertha and Butterball, you'd think obesity would be a hinderence to a hero in the long run. (One of the characters is an obese black teen with the Mental Illness Haircut.) Sure Faith can fly, but put her in a room with a low ceiling and is cluttered so she can't really fly around much and she'd be screwed. Obesity is hard on the knees, you get tired more easily, costumes are more likely to rip, and while we should be decent to these folks, it shouldn't be glorified.

Whatever you guys do, don't read Deadpool #01 written by Skottie Young. I like Young's art style fine, but if this aforementioned comic is of any indication, the guy can't write to save his life. Haven't read anything by him before, like I hate Fairyland, but if it's also as humorless and full of wooden dialogue as his first foray to chronicling the adventures of the Regenerative Degenerate, then I really don't intend on catching up. Between this, Old Man Logan vs Deadpool and the Merc With a Mouth's cameos in All-New Wolverine, I'm starting to give up hope in ever reading a quality new Deadpool comic again.

GameStop to Start Selling Comic Books

By MATTHEW MUELLER - June 6, 2018

  • DC Comics market, and it is happening rather soon.

Gamestop has recently leaned into the collectibles market and thus far has had stellar results. The latest move is yet another step in that comic-centric direction, as Bleeding Cool has learned that Gamestop will start offering comics themselves directly in certain locations. The leaked images show several comics already in the Gamestop system, which mainly consist of Marvel and DC books though there are a few Image and Oni Press titles in there as well.

Part of the reason for the new initiative lies with James Parker, who previously helmed the comic and collectibles initiative at Hastings. That part of the store chain was successful, though ultimately the rest of the store couldn't keep up, resulting in the chain to close its doors. Parker has now moved over to Gamestop, and the new comic book program will start in trial form in 20 Gamestop stores and 20 ThinkGeek stores.

"We are indeed getting into comics, as a retail test forum," Parker told Bleeding Cool. "Comics are often a part of our promotional entertainment industry environment, including video games – we can learn from this tribal knowledge. We have indeed partnered with Diamond to carry a small selection of comics in 40 stores utilizing their new spinner rack. The comics are mostly from Marvel and DC with a focus on key series and titles. This is just a small launch to bring comics to some of our collectibles stores as they fit with the current trend of Collectibles that are performing in the market. Should this prove successful, we may consider rolling out to additional stores in the future but plan to keep it limited to the spinner rack for the foreseeable future. Of course, you can expect to see some exclusive variants from us in the future."

If you've gone into a Gamestop recently you'll notice a heavy focus on comic and pop culture collectibles anyway, so comics should fit right in, even if it is just the spinner rack for the moment. Honestly, it is amazing it hasn't happened sooner, as video games often have comic book related tie-ins anyway. Not only that, but they already sell statues, socks, and action figures of superheroes anyway, so it just makes sense to offer the source material.

We're also sure no one at a comic company is going to object to being seen in more retail stores either, and Gamestop has around 6000 of them.

So, what do you think of Gamestop's latest move? Let us know in the comments

The Gamestops around me are in some fairly high rent retail areas, not sure how they make money from this.

This makes me long for the days were could could do comic with a black protagonist and not have them be the constant victim of racism or make them a jerk that doesn't get called on (see Riri as Iron Man). Back in the 90s, the original Static comics touched on gang violence and how non-whites can also be homophobic (Richie was gay in those).

Yeah, we used to get awesome stuff like Christopher Priest's Black Panther, now we have Coates' pile of shit and BLACK, where all the super powered mutants are poor, oppressed blacks.

You see that attitude in other media as well; it treats them like victims and that people who are lighter than them are the enemy and at times act inhuman.

And even when we get an actual POC antagonist, you can bet their motivations will always somehow lead back to "it's cuz whitey".

Welp, looks like DC Comics got tired of making money:

If there's someone you can trust to write even shittier stories than Visaggio it's definitely Quinn.

"a dystopian sci-fi thriller about a ragtag team of sex workers fighting for the freedom to love in a world where sexual pleasure is monitored, regulated and policed by the government"

So 1984 except with trannies and fags. Great, I guess.

Yeah, for every Sandman, Animal Man, Lucifer or really good Vertigo series there were dozens of monumentally shit books published under the imprint. So this is par for the course really.

Vertigo's been dead to me since they cancelled Hellblazer.

Other than Second Coming, none of these stories sound interesting and look more like identity politics than anything else. Hopefully Second Coming will be an entertaining as Battle Pope was.

Yeah, in a different political climate and a better writer Border Town could've turned out good too (I could see me from ten years ago thinking it'd be a cool piece of magical realism, like Gilbert Hernandez comics like Julio's Day or Palomar), but I'd be surprised if it wasn't full of pandering popaganda with a dumbed down, biased representation of sociopolitical issues. I agree that Second Coming has probably the most potential for being any good, though the whole "Superman is contemporary Jesus Christ" angle is a bit played out in my opinion. Apparently author Mark Russel was also the one behind DC's recent Flintsones and Snagglepuss comics, though I've yet to read those, so I can't really speak on how good they are.

The Flintstones one was pretty good so there could be hope for that one. Now that you mention it, Gilbert Hernandez writing a story like Border Town would be much better.

Any thoughts on Bendis' Superman so far? It's not bad from what I've seen in the first two issues of Man of Steel, but I'm reserving judgment until it's finished.

Oh great. Just when I thought the most pathetic and tedious edgelord comic in human history was finally gone for good, some dumbass decided to bring back Crossed after it was dead for like 3 years.

*sigh* dunno why I even care at this point beyond lingering resentment for wasting what could have been a solid concept (i.e. something that isnt a by the books zombie setting, with the infected being just pure evil instead of animalistic and brainless) for Garth Ennis (and later wannabe garth ennis) masturbation and "LOL LOOK HOW EDGY WE ARE GUIZ! OUR ZOMBIES SAY CUNT AND RAPE DOGS AND STUFF LOL!" shit that stopped being entertaining and interesting at some point in the late 80s.

I guess I kinda hoped that as the "professional" comic medium steadily shits itself to death, that it could atleast have enough dignity to not resurrect this shit as the industry slowly expires

(and yes I am aware that my whole schtick is dumb edgelordy crap, but frankly I think if you are going to go in the direction of transgressive edgelord shit then atleast have it be explicitly a jokey shits and giggles affair, instead of dressing it up as some serious and spooky horror crap)
