I don't like when writers make a big deal about Batman not killing or not using guns
If they wanted Batman to not use guns or actively kill people that's fine, it just the fact they constantly have to draw attention to it, and they constantly engineer scenarios where his ethos ensures that more people will die. The worst part is Redditors saying it's okay because all life is sacred which is why Batman will violently assault hundreds of criminal and police officers in order to ensure Joker stays alive.

At what point does the world's greatest detective come to the realization that Joker always gets aways and always murders people in exchange.

My last piece of art from 2025 was finally delivered.

Jill Thompson drawing a scene from Coraline from the Neil Gaiman coloring book.

Reading-wise, I finished the last two Spider-Girl epic collections (vols. 5 & 6), which collect up to issue #100 of her series. There is one more volume announced, and I think one volume after that to collect all her appearances. I wonder if they'll do another volume to collect the Renew Your Vows series.

Still loving Spider-Girl, but I am a little frustrated that the series references tie-in events that aren't in the trade and will likely not be collected in the future. Who knew the MC2 universe was so extensive?

I hope that announce an Omnibus line for the MC2 line

Finished Batman/Huntress Cry for Blood.
Pretty good, you semi expect the twist at the end.

Finally was convinced to read Ultimate Spider-Man by Jonathan Hickman so i picked up the first trade.
Have to say, especially as a guy who generally doesn't like Spider-Man, I really enjoyed this.
I'm planning on picking up the rest of them.

Of course I'm always reading Green Lantern.

Spiderman and Daredevil letting Kingpin live constantly is not any better than Batman letting The Joker live constantly.

Both are defeated constantly, both have done horrific things and constantly get away from punishment thanks to corruption from the system.

So anyone that claims to hate Batman for not killing the joker but love Spiderman and Daredevil is really a hypocrite at the end of the day.
Kingpin makes sense because it's in his name: He's the Kingpin. The Insomniac Spider-Man game dealt with this by having him getting put away and it leading to a rise in crime in New York because a bunch of people were fighting each other for the right to take the now vacant mantle. If Wilson Fisk dies, then the people who would hold back to not attract his wrath when he gets out of prison would also join the fight. The amount of innocent people who would die in the crossfire wouldn't be worth the risk to someone like Peter or Matt.

Also, Fisk is a businessman who is out to make himself number one. Joker just kills randomly for shits and giggles. They're both monsters but they're completely different beasts.

I've always found Terry to be a more compelling Batman than Bruce. Also, him and his brother being engineered to be Bruce's biological sons (as well as, in a weird way, their father Warren's) doesn't really make any significant difference - That was added in, in part because the artist drew Terry like a young Bruce - which then carried over to the animated series.

The same is said about the Joker. Where's the Punisher when you need him? Oh wait, he was killed off because "GUNS BAD!", then brought back later once his replacement failed, kek.

For what's worth, while Terry will avoid directly killing people, he sure doesn't care about collateral damage: frequently during the series you see stuff like a giant round container he pushed off to cause a distraction crushing bad guys in the background and he doesn't give a damn.

It's less that he doesn't care about collateral so much as he won't risk life and limb to save a diseased maniac who actively puts others and himself in harm's way. Like Bale's Batman. People give Batman Begins so much shit because Baleman decides to leave Ra's in the crash of his own making after he went on a rant about how he will never stop. In the minds of retard Batman fans not saving the super terrorists with plans to destroy the world shows Batman does not think life is le precious. It's just annoying at some point.

It's one thing for Batman not to kill or even save criminals, but what the current claim that Batman must save any and/all life at any cost besides taking life is just not narratively sound or an enjoyable character trait.

Since Im on the "unpopular opinion" kick, here goes another.

I absolutely hate power scaling in DC and Marvel alike but, somehow, Marvel's is kind of worse on the basis that it at least tries to go for something more "realistic" comparatively to DC.

A huge example are Magneto and Dr Doom. How the fuck these two lose any fights whatsoever? Dr Doom is basically magic evil Batman where he apparently can do literally anything, tech or magic alike so lets just leave it at that.

Magneto's powers have been retconned to get so OP that he controls the magnetic fields of literally anything, thus he isnt limited at anything metallic (and apparently he has some degree of mind powers too tho idk if that wasnt retconned by another retcon as is the way with comics). This mf can pull iron out of your blood, control the eletric pulses of your brain and even control Earth's rotation. Not even mentioning he can make a force field so powerful that it can tank Cyclops going all out on it. So how come he loses any fights whatsoever?

When you make your villain so OP that nothing less of another power boost as OP for the heroes would work just make their defeat come off as nothing short of an asspull, a deux ex machina. And they always come with the "Oh he was distracted" or "Oh X was holding him back" or "He wasnt going for the kill" which you know are just excuses at the end of the day because the creators of these characters never intended for him to get that OP nor for their plots to go that long.

I don't like when writers make a big deal about Batman not killing or not using guns

You mean that they try to make Batman look worse off for not using them or make a constant point how its vital that Batman never takes a life or uses guns whatsoever to the point it feels soap boxy? Because there are two unhealthy extremes here.

I personally stand vigilantes shouldnt kill on the mere basis that its not their jurisdiction, they are all technically breaking the law by their very nature but when they at least leave the criminals to be properly arrested and prosecuted, you can argue they are providing a "service" to society at large without becoming judge jury and executioner. It makes the "legally" easier to swallow to the system and the public.

The problems begin when we go beyond your typical mobs or bank robber and start adding super villains into the mix. At first its fine but as escalation kicks in and villains, old and new, are forced by the narrative to do worse, making harder for the reader to buy that they deserve anything less than death so when said death isnt brought upon them, it becomes frustrating and even immersion breaking. Batman with the Joker is the "go to" example but I'd argue this plagues all of capeshift media one way or the other.

As I have said in the reply above, I dont think any super hero should kill if it can be avoided, therefore I do not think Batman should kill The Joker

HOWEVER, that doesnt mean that I dont recognize that the narrative makes such a mockery (unintentional or otherwise) of Batman's morals and philosophy by having the system, who should be the one to decide The Joker's fate, be so incompetent at best and corrupt at worst (added with The Joker just becoming far far more grotestically evil over the years) that it becomes immersion breaking.

I much prefer the stories where his rogue's gallery finds some level of redemption like we saw with mr Freeze and Bane a couple of times just to mention a few. Batman should be a nightmare to those that seek evil but be a great helper to those that are just in a lot of pain and lashing out, like Killer Croc and Two Face. Gotham is a broken city full of broken people and a lot of those broken people become something horrifying as payback and Batman is meant to be the "glue" to bring it and its people back together, as difficult as it is. I can buy The Joker being in the "irredemable" bunch, with others like Victor Z and Professor Pyg, however, have them either dying due to their own actions, due to their victims fighting back or because even the system got fed up with them and executed them. And then there are those that arent "redeemed" but still willing to "play along" like Penguin basically "trading" information with Batman in exchange for him turning a blind eye to minor crimes.

The problem is basically defined as "status quo" and "Escalation" (as I also mentioned above). The villains are too iconic to be anything else so they'll return to those roles and they need to be alive to do so, while also doing worse things to stand out.

Therefore, unintentionally or not, the writers make Batman and his values look stupid instead them being harsh, intimidating but ultimately benevolent because nothing changes and everything just becomes "worse" because it is all to keep the writers "engaged".

But then again, despite it all being kind of infuriating, we sadly cannot act like the system giving a slap to the wrist to repeat DANGEROUS offenders is all that unrealistic, especially today.

I guess its a reminder why DCAU Batman is one of my favorite takes of the character and the mythos, especially since many of the villains either die off or "retire" from villainy one way or the other. Same goes to the Arkham verse, in both The joker is allowed to be killed off, for the absolute narrative better (Knight not withstanding...).

I've long thought that it's a good thing that nobody knows Batman's real identity.

Otherwise, Bruce Wayne would be bankrupted by lawsuits from people who lost loved ones after Joker's 12,356th escape from Arkham.

The problem is that Magneto controls one of the four fundamental forces (electromagnetism) so anyone with the intelligence and imagination could realistically turn it into an unstoppable force. I would draw the line at controlling the Earth's rotation, which SHOULD require enough exertion to kill Magneto if he even attempted it.

Don't under estimate the absolutely absurd power scaling of Marvel

I used to really like Magneto.
But they just kept upping his power too absurd levels.
Him and Storm.
These characters are basically gods at this point.
DooM is obscenely powerful too, but I think his "I'm infallible" EGO kinda keeps him in check.
I feel like DooM appearing in the next batch of films has Marvel really trying to get folks hype for him.

Storm's well beyond a god by now, mostly thanks to her most recent solos.

TL;DR: she's not only a literal storm goddess now, but also an embodiment of life itself (powerful enough to host Eternity, which she's actually done (pics rel, maybe? I don't read Dark Age comics for the most part), tasked with keeping the balance between life and death) and directly descended from two of the three Vishanti (Agamotto and, therefore, Oshtur).

She seems to be replacing Captain Carol in the "strong independent woman Marvel won't stop pushing" department; I'm expecting her to have some major role in either Doomsday or the following X-Men films, because this hard push only began around the time Doomsday was publicly announced and retooled.

I personally find Magneto's powerscaling the least offensive of the three, given that Doom is kind of just a really persistent guy with some occult knowledge and and Storm's entire fucking character originally centered on the conflict between her false godhood and her reality as a normal mutant, but I will agree that it's gotten a little ridiculous. He's always had utter bullshit as part of his toolkit-- just read some of Kirby's X-Men, it's kind of hilarious how much random stuff they excuse with electromagnetism-- but fucking with gravity and sensing dimensional rifts is a bit much. Even just sticking to scientific electromagnetism would get him all of this to play with and measure his power by:
1769110938666.png
so adding a second fundamental force of nature to his toolkit is completely unnecessary. The man can absorb lightning bolts and bend entire cities to his will, isn't that power enough?

EDIT: come to think of it I can't recall a single prominent hero who could manipulate gravity without it being a secondary power to something else
Alex Power is maybe the only one, but he can't really manipulate it (just increase/decrease it through an outside force). Harry Leland is a villain, but even he can only increase gravity on a specific person or object. Huh

For heroes, Gravity, who was of course completely discarded fairly soon after his introduction. He was even made the Protector of the Universe for a very brief period of time, between the actual Quasar dying and the introduction of (one of) his lesbian replacement(s).

Though a villain, Graviton is in Magneto's league, power-level wise, but he's got a slew of mental/emotional issues that always lead to someone (generally a woman) easily manipulating his actions.

In regards to Storm, it's obnoxious how wildly perfect she's been shaped into since Krakoa. It was cloying and distracting before, while her solo series is practically unreadable. No matter what she does, including literal murder, she is always faultless and in the right.

And if 'power scaling' bothers you, just look into what they've done to Maggott in the same shitty Storm series:

I mean, she always was, or at least one of them.
The only reason Captain Carol was pushed as the main Marvel Woman to begin with was that the movie rights for Storm, Jean, Rogue, and Sue were all in Sony's or Fox's hands.

The dumbest thing about Magneto being as powerful as he is is that the guy is a 90+ year old holocaust survivor who shouldn’t be able to survive the type of strain his powers would put on his body.

This crap is why I can’t stand modern marvel comics. A large chunk of the reason I liked the older Marvel comics is because the characters were somewhat relatable and for the most part just regular people. Now it feels like everyone is a god or at least super special and above being humans to the point where they don’t even feel like the same characters anymore. Having a god as a main character isn’t very interesting to me compared to having a ex-thief with claustrophobia issues who actually has time to act like a superhero instead of a just being someone’s power fantasy.
