I think a big problem with Spider-Man is that Marvel hasn't had a clue what to do with him for at least 10 years. Its all just short term gimmicks for the most part

I'm different. They know exactly what needs to happen. But they won't do it.

Spider-man either needs a soft reboot, with OMD done and gone or a hard reset. They have instead either out of pride or professional restrictions due to the prominence of Joe Quesada, Dan Slotts, and their desire not to cave to 'toxic' fans; refused to retcon the last disastrous decade, really decade and a half of Spidey storylines.

Peter Parker is an easy character to write and do; unless you bring your own failings to bear.

What's with the dickriding people do for Al Ewing? Its like he is the second coming of Christ the way people act about him and he is just a really ok writer.
Most people praising him never read anything outside of Marvel, maybe mainline DC and big Image books. His Hulk book is different than most stories they are familiar with and better than writing in a typical comic they are accustomed to. That makes Ewing look great and groundbreaking to these people. It's the same thing that happened with people like Vaughan and Millar all over again.

worse, they haven't read the Incredible Hulk. Todd McFarlane and Peter David did this shit. And though I hate PAD's writing at this point (It wears thin). He did everything Al Ewing did better thirty years ago.

Mark Millar's stuff I get, but Vaughan? I don't see how people could praise his stuff like that. Some of it's good.

OMD does need to go but I think the issues with Spider-Man are deeper then that.

I do believe that the last 15ish years of Spider-Man needs to be dumped

The last time I enjoyed Spider-Man at all was during the 'Other' storyline where he seemingly dies and then comes back to life with enhanced powers. Even that story kinda sucked but it was the last decent era of Spider-Man. I liked what Peter David was doing, having Peter be a substitute teacher, harkening back to his days as an assistant teacher (or was it a teacher's assistant? I always confuse those two) but he didn't get to do much with it because they then quickly destroyed Spider-Man with Civil War and then OMD. If it were up to me I'd reset everything back to right before the Gathering of Five and go with the original plan of Osborn holding baby May captive rather than Aunt May, which is what Spider-Girl did.

I occasionally check back in with what's going on in the Spider-Man books but anytime it looks like they're going to reverse OMD and get things back on track, they fuck it up and basically just taunt and dismiss their fans.

The issue is that you can't keep a character in the same status quo for 60 years and still have people care, people understood this with him being married to MJ and becoming a Family Guy but editorial wanted to back to the status quo that had already been milked dry and now you have the issue of nothing ever being allowed to happen aside from dumb gimmicks that never go anywhere. It's shit like this that makes Marvel the Coronation Street of genre fiction.

It’s so fucked up, if you want good Spidey content, you gotta look at anytime he shows up in someone else’s book and then he’s in-character or they’re period pieces to better times (Joe Fixit/New Fantastic Four) but go back to his book? Then he’s simping for his ex who fucked an arab.

Peter needs to take some ques from the Banner playbook to get over his girl problems

The fucking box of chocolate on the table cracks me up

The Hulk is fundamentally the gayest fucking character ever and the abused mentally ill guy being the strongest ever is really, really fucking boring. It is quite literally a gay power fantasy.

Even as a kid it just came off as pretentious when they tried to make the big green monster something else. Banner’s characterization is so schizophrenic I don’t care for him. I actually like it when his character is humiliated that was my favorite part of Rise of the Imperfects, he gets killed like two seconds in a cutscene.

The Hulk’s entire thing is to attract edge lords. He gets stronger the more pain and anger he feels. He was a victim of child abuse and everyone just can’t leave him alone.

I’d take a straight wish fulfillment character over him like Spider-Man everyday.

Ah yes, Spider-Man the wish fulfilment character, nothing says masculine power fantasy like being poor and the love of your life being fucked by an arab.

You got some funny wishes.

Spider-Man isn’t as high up on the progressive stack and needs to be emasculated so Miles can be the only Spider-Man. Spider-Man struggling with a plot point that has effects, I blame the fat Jew who’s wrote him for like two decades at this point making him a redditor.

Hulk is an effeminate scientist who turns into an unstoppable ball of repressed trauma.

Depends on the version. But he's a blatant rip off of Jekyll and Hyde with the Atomic energy twist.

Hulk can be fun, but I think we have too many weird instances of shit like starship hulk and not enough of the decent stuff like planet hulk or even the ewing hulk.
I actually tried reading that abomination last night, nice art I guess but Cates’s template (Venom, Thor, Thanos) is so obvious. That car crash was god mercy-killing the run.

Planet Hulk’s only downside is that it isn’t longer and he didn’t stay in the cosmic side of things longer, would’ve been fun if when Nova chewed out Stark after Annihilation and Civil War he casually dropped.

“You know Tony, last I counted it was seventy worlds that call the Hulk, king, god or warlord, the titles are interchangeable at this point. I don’t know why you shot him into space but thank you, he’s been busy killing tyrants and breaking chains.”

Cates has some okay ideas, but his work is kinda just goyslop. At least it doesn't try to push an SJW agenda.

I did kinda like the King in Black event and stuff leading up to it. IDK if that was Cates or Nick Spencer.

Quite the edgy take but I do agree that Hulk is kind of a shit character and it's notable that the most popular Hulk stories almost all inevitably boil down to "Hulk goes on a rampage and kicks the shit out of everyone else or everyone else teams up to barely bring him down". For a character that's supposed to be some tortured soul struggling with an unstoppable beast within, it's remarkable how flat and one-note most Hulk stories end up being.

In a meta-sense, Hank Pym is a better character. His suicide attempt was leagues above any of Banner’s and you can actually make the mental breakdown a lot better. He fulfills the same tortured genius who wants help, but is constant attacked over something he really can’t ever apologize more enough with the domestic and genocidal robot son.
You can actually do a few angles on the slap because he was literally tripping balls when it happened and Janet was a whore.

My issue with the Hulk lies in that he’d be a better character if Banner accidentally triggered episodes and killed people indirectly.
