Aight I want to start getting into comics and shit.

What are the best runs on Deadpool and Spider-Man respectively? I’ll probably start with those.
Spiderman probably the only character where I'd recommend reading from issue #1 of the original run. Ultimate Spider-Man is just a distilled greatest hits with none of the character development that made them impactful.

I'll add you're trading greats like Steve Ditko, JRSR, Todd McFarlane, and Byrne for a burnt out and phoning it in Bagley.

Honestly, the Ultimateverse amazes me. It has hidden gems like Millar FF. But on the whole the stuff just doesn't hold up at all.

I always hated Bendis/Bagley Ultimate Spidey because it was the least creative of the hype Ultimate titles and was artistically depressing. I'm struggling to think of one thing Bendis introduced that was actually original and more than a redesign/pallette swap.

I dislike Bageley's art. It's too sterile, I still on occasion post a few art threads on /co/ and I have no clue why people like Alex Ross. The art work and Alex's style is so sterile. I can like Phil Noto because he goes for a 60's time frame and it's expressive. Ross is just really static poses based on crappy cosplayers. Bagely's characters just look ugly and bug-eyed in a way that astounds me because I like manga. Even when Bagley has a good colorist he's lacking.

FINALLY someone says it about Alex Ross. There are a select few pieces of his I like but mostly I find they all look like they illustrate what David Mazzuchelli said: "The more realistic you try to make comic book characters, the more absurd they become".

I feel similarly though not identically about Stanley "Artgerm" Lau. Like...his art just looks like any other digital artist drawing too-detailed anime style art. I don't get why he's a cover artist.

I admit to like Ross, but these criticisms make me want to revisit some of those works and eye them more critically. And on the topic of /co/ and critique, I don't get the hate for Rod Reis. I've been loving his work on New Mutants.

My biggest gripe about Bagly is he's another Ramos. He has a style, it even worked okay on the character. But not only hasn't he really innovated, he's worse than where he use to be. Not as worse as Humberto but still.

As to Ross, I disagree. Somewhat. Alex Ross does a good job with design and structure. You can, and comics have, done worse than Ross Kingdom Come/Earth X redesigns. I like his art for what it is, but it can be stiff due to the limitations of realism.

Bagley/Ramos are fine.

I like Ross, but I always found him to be more of a guy that's best at realism attempts that otherwise ngl. Like the dude can sure bring that "newsreel" type feel to something, but I would never want him to tell me stories about the mundane.

Hello fellow kiwis, I need help finding a comic book that I read 10+ years ago and that has been living rent free in my head for the last week.

All I remember about it was that the main character was a bunch of sentient tentacles that lived inside a metal arm and his power was to take control of people's body parts. Most of the story was set during the Black Plague, but I think there were issues set in modern times.

EDIT: Another thing I remember from it was that there was this little plot thread about a mom wanting revenge against a guy for kidnapping (?) her child. She was going to die from the plague anyway, but her head was still intact so she asks tentacle dude to use it. Tentacle dude then goes to villain's party using dead lady's head and avenges (I think). Last scene from the issue was him finding the child, discovering she was going to die from the plague soon, and spending her last moments with her pretending to be her mom.

Goddammit. I got the JLD omnibus but I'm hearing from people it sucks? At least the first 8 issues are weak. Agree or disagree?

I can't find anything that exactly matches, but maybe Shreck/Terror from Terror, Inc. by Marvel? Ageless character, steals body parts, has a metal arm... not a mass of tentacles, though.

If you find what it was, let me know. It sounds rad.

Shrek is like the only thing from that sidebar "imprint" that survived into modern Marvel. I remember the rest of the things being kinda weird, like Doctor Zero(?) and the Knights of St. George.

The Annihilation saga is probably the only worthwhile comics Marvel has produced in the last twenty years. A shame that its finale, The Thanos Imperative, felt fairly rushed.

I also hate that the original Annihilation event has never been properly collected with Keith Giffen's Thanos work, which sets up a ton of the stuff used in the event.
I knew almost nothing about Cosmic Marvel shit going in except for big names like Galactus, Thanos, and Silver Surfer and it was one of the best times I've had reading comics. Even turned me into a Nova fan and I hadn't read or seen thing about him before that.

And for those interested, I used this handy guide curtesy of /co/ to track everything. The board kinda sucks now, but they're good for handing you a nice and easy to follow reading list for these kind of things.

there's a few issues of Nova just popping up to immediate post Civil War-Earth and yelling at Tony Stark/Mr. Fantastic about how they're so retarded. idk if that counts.

Yeah, that was first 3 issues of his book, immediately after Annihilation ended. Nothing gets your goat like fighting a horrible galactic scale war just to go home to see your neighbors fighting over if heroes should wear nametags or not

At first, I thought, "Justice League Detroit? OF COURSE it sucked!"

But then I realized you meant Justice League Dark
