In 2012, indie dev/pretentious hack Spencer Yan announced Midnight Animal, a promising fan sequel/total conversion mod for Hotline Miami 2. It got greenlit on Steam and even recieved the blessings of Dennaton, the orignal devs. All was going good until his girlfriend broke up with him, and instead of using that experience to contribute something unique to the game, he instead turned it into Midnight Animal: A Story of Love and Forgetting, a thinly veiled knockoff of Atlus's JRPG Persona 5. This, naturally, completely pissed off many Hotline Miami fans who'd been following the project for four years. Spencer's reaction was to basically flip them the bird say "It's my game, not yours".

He didn't rip off just the aesthetic, either. While the core Hotline Miami gameplay remained, features from the Persona series like developing social links with characters to obtain different Personas (masks that represent hidden facets of the character's personality that also grant special powers) were lifted.

Spencer's reaction, of course, was to deny fucking everything, claim he was merely "inspired" by Persona 5, and then kill Midnight Animal due to the harsh backlash he got. It's now called "Exegesis" and more or less now a visual novel...er...sorry, "literary event". Of course, he's not quite done ripping things off.

Of course, you can follow him on Twitter to see him complain about those dirty dang trolls. He also has a Steam, Patreon, Tumblr, and Wordpress.

Someone trying to mesh several "styles" of gameplay into one game and it turning out a bloated pile of shit, a classic story.

Also, the anime character portraits mesh so fucking badly with the Hotline Miami visuals it's no surprise that people got pissed.

Saying you were inspired by a game by ripping features off, now where did I hear this?...Oh hi, YandereDev!
EDIT: Shouldn't this cow be labelled as a careercow rather than an artcow?

I know him in passing and all I got from our very few talks was that he was rather ornery. Kind of weird to see him here since I sort of know him but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
All I got is that this rule is funny.

Persona mechanic itself (swapping masks to gain different powers) were completely lifted.
Kind of a silly complaint because that's also pretty central to Hotline Miami.
And mentioning a ripped title of a softdrink that's clearly just a ripoff of a real world brand is also just kind of inane.

Not trying to whiteknight here but mentioning those kinds of things in the OP of all things is just kind of dumb.

I've updated the OP to better explain how those mechanics are directly lifted from the Persona series. I know how Hotline Miami handles its masks, but Midnight Animal's implementation directly ripped off Persona 5 in how it handled its. Also, the soda drink speech was ripped off from Steins;Gate, which is why I included the video. It wasn't just the fake brand name.

Ah OK, thank you for elaborating.

What idiot would want to ban an innocent emoticon like that? Is/was he afraid people will want to voice their opinions? Because it's way too late for that now.

that game looks like absolute horseshit. I know better graphic designers still in middleschool.
