It's a shame that SC6 probably killed this franchise for good. CAS in ranked matches killed that shit day 1.
It is unfortunate, but the last 2 have sucked, so if they can't make good ones anymore then it's kinda pointless.

So, something of a necro post, but: I picked up SoulCalibur 6 a while back, and I wanted some tips. I'm a bit new to fighting games in general; played SC 3 a long time ago, but I was never all that good with it then, so I'd like to get some tips for general improvement here on SC 6. Anyone have any suggestions for characters, techniques, etc., that I should learn?
So, keep in mind that I'm a pleb that never plays online. Spacing is the most basic--and least understood--difference in Soul Caliber games and other fighting games, hence 8-way run. Weapons have different reaches and dictate whether characters are meant to be offensive or defensive. So what is 8-way run? That's when you use the stick to move around the ring besides forwards and backwards. That allows you to sidestep and avoid vertical attacks which typically have more reach than horizontal. The stick movement also determines the strength and speed of attacks. Typically, the longer you hold the stick, the harder, slower, and more reach the attack is going to be, which is different from the dedicated buttons Street Fighter has. Finally, knowing the three-technically four--hitboxes: high, middle, special middle, and low. Guard only covers two of these boxes at a time, so you can still remain on the offense if you can hit where they aren't guarding like low attacks during a standing guard. Haven't played in a while, but I think middle attacks can bypass crouching guard since high attacks just miss.

What can make Soul Caliber irritating is that they change movesets every game and I don't know why they do this. Sure, characters feel similar enough between games so I can generally remember how they move, but with some exceptions like Kilik, it's really jarring. Don't ask me about just impacts. Those involve getting frame inputs and I lack the autism to figure it out.

Well, thanks for the help anyway, guys! I know that SC 6 isn't the greatest of game out there - the fact that it was something of a franchise killer is easy to see - but I'm still looking forward to having at least some fun with the game regardless; got it for cheap, so it's not like I'm really regretting my purchase.

If I might ask at least; what do you guys main? Any characters you're fond of? Any custom creations?

Yun-seong was my main until he/his style got basically removed from the main roster for a few years and from then on I became a Siegfried/Nightmare main.

I did also like Seong Mi-na and Talim's playstyles though. And 5 got me used to Setsuka's style thanks to that gay bullshit with Patroklos.

Link is still the absolute best crossover character, but I also kinda like Geralt's style in 6.

I like Cervantes cause he a Spanish Zombie Pirate with a gun that flies around the ring.

Can confirm; Cervantes is FUN!

Seong Mi-Na and Raphael were always my favorites, I like Siegfried and Ivy too (her whip sword is so damn cool). I made custom characters in every game because I'm a sucker for that.

Making custom characters is my favorite thing to do in the game, currently; trying to make a Lizardman character, though the lack of customization options hurts. Also, the finding a fighting style that really fits them; half of the styles feel way to "delicate and/or civilized" for them, and there's a TON of clipping issues with the weapons and armor they get.

Siegfried and Nightmare; nothing more fun than slamming a giant sword into someone...

Heard that 5 was pretty bad due to Patroklos; seen a few vids, was he really that bad?

Never did play Link; he was on the Gamecube one, right? SC 2?

I think to this day Link has my favorite SC moveset and I really wish they'd bring it back for an OC or create a fighter. After SC 2 I started making Raphael and I found that his straightforward but somewhat unconventional moves can catch a lot of players off guard. He's fun as fuck.

5 was dragged down by the fact that the entirety of the story mostly revolved around Sophitia's kids Patroklos and Pyrrha and their weirdly incestuous-vibed relationship with each other whereas both the returning and newer cast pretty much got shafted and sidelined when they had marginally interesting things about each of them that could have been explored a lot better.

He became my go-to when it was time to smash people. He honestly felt a bit unfair or maybe he just really clicked with how I prefer to play. He was fast as fuck and unless people were really good at aggressive 8-way movement they were toast. Even Kilik fags that thought that a long stick and poke/running away was the way to victory got smashed.

The true way to play was random 8 character team battles, same as in the Tekken games.

SoulCalibur peaked at II, III was alright but Chronicles of the Sword was a downgrade from Weapon Master with how gimmicky it was.

I didn't have a main. I used Nightmare for Weapon Master because of how quickly I could get through the mode with him, but I used most of the characters evenly.

Link aside, I've always preferred SC3. My main, Mitsurugi, felt way better in it.

Really? That? Half of SCs schtick was character creation and competitive was the best way to find a match even today. I suppose they could've had the lobby system from 5 but that really wasn't the issue.

Love the SC series, played it since it was in the Arcades. I would say my favourites are III, II, I, IV, VI. Never played V.
The custom Assassin moveset was my favourite in III,
I usually main Yoshimitsu, Nightmare and Taki.
