Since its inception more than 20 years ago, E3 has traditionally been the biggest gaming event of the year. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all had a regular presence at the expo, but it appears Sony won't be a part of next year's event.

The ESA--the company that organizes E3--has shared the first details about next year's expo, and it seems Sony will not have a presence there. The publisher is notably absent from the list of companies that have already committed to the event, among them its biggest console competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as other major publishers like Take-Two, Ubisoft, Activision, and more.

Sony has confirmed it plans to skip next year's E3 to Game Informer. "As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," the company said. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can't wait to share our plans with you."

This will mark the first time Sony has opted to skip E3 since it entered the video game business in the mid-90s, although other companies have begun to take a different approach to their E3 showings in recent years. Microsoft notably moved its entire presence offsite to the Microsoft Theater for E3 2018, while Nintendo has forgone live press conferences in favor of pre-recorded video presentations for the past several years. Sony, too, tried something different with its E3 2018 showing by focusing primarily on four of its upcoming games and presenting them through a "guided experience," which garnered a mixed reaction from viewers.

This isn't the only major event Sony will be skipping. The company recently confirmed it will not host its annual PlayStation Experience this year. "We won't have it in the States this year," worldwide studios head Shawn Layden revealed on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

They're probably hoping to avoid lots of awkward questions from the audience about why they hate tits now.

On a non shitposty note now that both Nintendo and Sony have left can E3 finally die?

Probably tired of having to face criticism for their games not being woke enough, so they're done with showing off games at conferences.

Which to that, I say good on you. Fuck game conferences, it only gives fuel to blue-hairs that likely have never played a videogame in their lives.

I love that E3 is becoming irrelevant. As Digital Extremes have proven, its more than possible to host your own expo instead of competing for attention among dozens of other groups.

They probably don't want to deal with the legion of weebs angry over their censorship policy that affects Japanese titty games.

I've been a Sony guy since the PS1 but I legit am struggling to see any reason to pay attention to their current games.

Nintendo still shows up at E3, they just host a Direct instead of an event. Sony seems to forgo E3 entirely.

I’m gonna be sad without my yearly cringe reel clips tho *sigh* if E3 finally dies.

Oh no, what will Laura Kate Dale and Liam Robinson be able to leak and circlejerk about having info about now?

I'd like to be :optimistic: and say Sony realized that with E3 the only winning move is not to play but it seems more likely the bean counters got tired of bribing game devs to show their multi platform games in the PS panel so that Sony could pretend they have non-weebshit exclusives. Not that they have all that many anymore since Nips have finally started buying Gaming PCs, thanks mostly to modded Skyrim.

Sony doesn't even have weebshit anymore. All the weebs migrated to Switch and Steam when Sony spontaneously developed a bizarre fear of breasts.

Sony's fear of breasts is very recent unless I'm mistaken. They started developing for PC as a platform en masse much sooner, a game studio has to make that sort of decision much earlier then a few months ago.

Watch they’re just outsourcing their E3 presentations to the people who hack them all the time anyway.
