Maybe the modern game industry shouldn't give me reasons to focus on japanese games for the most part then
The majority of western games I have (and can still play) are still from before 2010-2012, primarily on PC.
You can look what games the PS3,PS4, and PS5 had at this same point in time. The PS5 games are not only more numerous they are of better quality to their respected genres.

Japanese games have become all very western right down to Nintendo's own exclusives, because Japan themselves like those types of games. BOTW is Ass Creed with a Zelda coat of paint, Mario and Pokemon have taken the same road as well. They play all very much like their western counterparts. Monster Hunter also adapted western types of gameplay systems and the series has done well for 3 installments better than it did in all earlier games. This is also true for Chinese games like Genshin Impact which is all based on the open world formula popularized from western games.

Games are all about mechanics, if you're failing to realize that there isn't much separating most Japanese games from western games outside of aesthetics you're not really diving deep into them and are taking it all on the surface level.

All JRPGs stem from Ultima/Akalabeth. They've done the same with open world games like Skyrim and adopted western gameplay systems into many modern games as well.

Even smaller genres like vehicle simulators are popular in both the west and japan.

Never been a long-time fanboy of Playstation, but even if, by some miracle, I manage to get a reasonable price on a PS5, I don't see why I should. I've watched several Playstation Directs, or whatever they're called. and the largest talking points they seem to promote are the improved graphics and the faster loading times. I ca nget all of that on my gaming PC though? What Sony and Microsoft seem to miss these days is the importance of console-specific features.

Say what you want about Nintendo, but at least I can remember one unique thing about each of their systems. They also tend to make first-party games that support those features. It's frustrating to watch because Sony has had some great first-party features on their previous consoles. The idea of streaming games off your PS4 to your Vita was a golden opportunity to capitalize off a convenience feature that the WiiU had. That might seem a bit like Sony trying to rip off Nintendo, but hey, go with what works. Overall I'm not very impressed anymore with the selection of home consoles. They all seem like homogenized streaming boxes trying to pull double-duty by offering all the same streaming apps and other crap that comes bundled with every shitty smart TV these days.

Too early to make that claim. The PS5 just came out not a few months ago. As of now, there are remasters and existing games on the PS4.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is not enough for me to purchase a PS5 and I love Ratchet & Clank.

Yeah but at the same point in time on the PS4 and the PS3 within their first year they had less.

PS4 had Killzone Shadowfall and TLOU1 Remastered

That's what I'm saying. I wait a year or two before considering upgrading consoles. Sony is taking full advantage of their success with PS4 and just catering to the consumer market. They'll buy PS5 because it's the hottest console yet.

They are becoming complacent while MS is gearing towards long term engagement and investment with the Xbox brand.

I don't think they're becoming complacent, their whole strategy is to link all their IPs together with cross promotion. What's happening currently is that both systems are still being scalped and neither can be easily purchased. Neither Sony or Microsoft are advertising games currently, microsoft is promoting their services and that they bought bethesda. But neither of these things have delivered new software to the system as of yet.

This reminds me of MS' strategy with their top three franchises: Halo, Gears and Forza. You buy an Xbox One to play Halo, Gears, Forza and watch TV on your TV. Their other exclusives were lackluster and barren. With this current trajectory Sony is going with their third person exclusives, they are counting on them to move units.

MS is trying to improve their Game Pass and exclusive softwares. With Bethesda under their belt and the MS exclusives Day 1 with GP, this will entice people to subscribe to their service. That's forward thinking. It's not for everybody, but I see the potential opportunity for MS to stay relevant in the gaming space.

Yeah but Sony already is trying to improve their exclusive software, they really built up their first party studios to the point where they did comparable sales figures to nitnendo's own first party titles and many were new IPs.

The TV shows that they're making are intended to act as advertisements to these. They're not turning playstation into a TV watching service, they're using other media to promote their games. It's across the board because all the anime acquisitions are intended to be funneled towards games just like their live action counterparts.

They're already involved with the Trails anime and they've had exclusivity deals with Falcom for 8-9 games already.

It's not a HUGE gap, but there is a gap, go back and actually look at the original game, memory can fool you and make you think a game looks better than it really does, that happened to me with Tomb Raider 2013, remembered it looking amazing on PC at the time, replayed it 5 years later in 2018 and was quite surprised at how dated it now looked, the gap between it and it's sequel, Rise of The Tomb Raider, is huge, even though Rise came out just under 3 years later and only 1 generation leap ahead (now granted, I was playing that on PC as well, can't speak about the console versions)
The "meme" is there because it's true. What major differences were there between late gen x360 and most of the games from the last console generation? Those differences will continue to be lesser with the current gen. Diminishing returns of hardware and software development compound with the sheer amount of money it takes to make today's games.

A huge difference if you actually look at games side by side instead of assuming there isn’t one because of a bias towards “diminishing returns”

Again I’m not talking so much consoles, maybe you have a point there, but comparing games on PC (where they look their best), like the example I already cited of Tomb Raider 2013 and Rise of The Tomb Raider on max settings, there is a very clear difference.

There is overall actually a HUGE leap between the 7th gen and 8th gen, much bigger than the leap from 6th to 7th which was more inconsistent.

I’ll give you one console exclusive example, compare the original Uncharted with Uncharted 4, especially the character’s faces, it’s a bigger leap than say from Jak and Daxter to the first Uncharted in my opinion (granted we’re also talking different spans of time, from 6 years to almost 9 years)

People like you just aren’t paying enough attention if you seriously think there was little difference between the 360/PS3 gen and the PS4/XBO gen, we are probably going to start hitting diminishing returns now though since we’re getting close to photorealistic at least as far as environments go.

If it's a detail that you have to pay more attention to see, the diminishing returns are already in place. The last huge jump was between ps2/gamecube/xbox to x360 and ps3, especially comparing the later gen to the beginning. Sure, there have been leaps and strides in a lot of areas since, but we're getting to the point that the major developments are less in generically making things prettier and more into investing a lot of time into making very specific physical effects realistic, ones that could potentially just be cloned with baking them in rather than real time. A lot of the reason for these diminishing returns is that moore's law is simply no longer in place due to major constrains in shrinking hardware anymore. That was unavoidable. Anyways, my point isn't that you cannot tell the difference between x360 to xbone or ps3 to ps4, but that when comparing a good late gen game on either the 360 or ps3 versus a game even late into the more recent gens, and there aren't a whole lot of improvements.

We're getting into "glass half full/half empty" territory here, it all depends on what you're personal standard of a "leap" is.

I'm not saying 7th gen to 8th gen was a quantum leap, no, of course it wasn't, there are diminishing returns, I just think people overhype that a bit, but maybe times really are changing?

Basically if I'm going to get real nerdy here's how I would break down the evolution of graphics over the last 20 years, first the focus was on textures, with generally low level (though higher level than before of course) geometry, the original Max Payne is a good example of this, low level geometry but still some snazzy textures, this "texture is king" era culminated in Valve's Source engine.

Then in the 7th gen and early HD era the focus was more on geometry (ie what they used to call "bump mapping" or real mapping) and fancy effects like bloom lighting or the "stuff looks wet" effect which was a real "whoa" effect at the time (think in Gears of War 1 when it's raining in the woods or water trickling down the stairs in Bioshock)

Trouble is oftentimes they had to sacrifice basic texture work so sometimes, although this was less of an issue on PC, you'd have some low level textures here and there, worse than some 6th gen games' textures, this was why Valve was able to still get by with the Source engine just fine during the 7th gen despite a few small updates.

Now ever since the 8th gen it's been the best of both worlds, all the fancy effects and geometry of the 7th gen with the return of sharp as hell textures, sharper than anything seen in the 6th gen, I think that's a significant leap, but now is when we are going to get real diminishing returns because we've already pushed things very far, now we're getting into weirder territory like ray tracing, which is neat, but a little overhyped.

I remember when I replayed Infamous: Second Son in 2018 how great it still looked after 4 years, it barely looked dated at all and that was a "launch window" game, I've definitely been not super impressed by what I've seen on the PS5, I did say we're still early and not there's not a clear indication where it's going yet, but Infamous: Second Son was a "launch window" game and still held up pretty well compared to the later PS4 games, it's not like comparing launch window PS2 games to later PS2 games at all.

Depends on the game.

Let's look at GTA V from 7th gen to 8th gen.

Even this comparison from the PlayStation generations.

There is more of a difference between 360/One and PS3/PS4, that varies from game to game.

There's also the fact that framerate and 4k resolution became high points to reach towards the end of the PS3/360 era.

One of the main reason why systems started to become more standardized was the fact that not needing to re-learn how to do the same shit for a different dev program helped immensely in getting better performance out of hardware.

You can look at the OG Demons Souls and compare it to the remake, there's stuff in the original like stretched textures or rigs that bend improperly.

There's also quite a few PS3 games that had terrible unfixable bugs like the HD port of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus which was entirely due to the hardware it was being made on. Wanderer couldn't hold on to anything right it and he relied on physics to move way more player control. Quite a few times you would just get tossed off because the physics dictated that the colossus shook you too much and would deplete 80% of your grip bar in one movement. The Original game did not have the grip bar deplete that quickly like that at all. There would be times where all you could do was hang on and it would be impossible to move because the wanderer couldn't stop tripping because again physics got in the way while climbing. To add insult to injury they based the HD port off the Eu version which had fucking hard time trials. So not only was your movement impeded you now had the hardest version to contend with as well.

God of War 3 for the PS3 had another gamewide bug but this one was at least in your favor. If you were able to start hard mode and die right off the bat, it would bug out and grant you invincibility and nothing could kill you.

A big reason why Shadow of Colossus got remade was because of how broken the PS3 version was.

I'm rather indifferent for a TLOU1 remake, but hey if it's their starting point to finally finish the Sly Cooper movie and make a game for that I'm not going to be bothered by that. We already know they're going to do the same for GOW and Horizon and both of those games turned out well. And they're already doing stuff for the Cold Steel anime. So This is pretty much what happened in the early 90's with Videogames being promoted by shows but this is on a far larger scale.

Nintendo has the mario movie and Theme park, so it's not like this is the only front that this is happening on.

4K did not reach consoles until the upgraded PS4 (Pro) And Xbox One (X). Even so, it was checkerboard, not native.

Personally, I wish for this and future generations, performance becomes a priority.

Again, it depends on the game and developer. There is a difference between PS3 and PS4 with the increased hardware.
