You know what? I actually have to applaud Sony. Their arrogance against game ownership has pushed the community towards game preservation, community revivals and technical trickery tenfold. Multiple PS3 titles are seeing their servers reactivated through DNS addresses and having the foresight to be cross compatible with RCPS3. The PS5 IS capable of backwards compatibility; Sony just decided not to. What an amazing turnout.

Well, all they really had to do was point to the emulator when a PS3/2 disc is inserted, but that would be too much space and effort to just port thier existing emulators or even use the open source ones like they did with the playstation classic.

Sony and Microsoft are two cheeks of the same arse. Neither company understands the gaming industry, save for some mavericks and geniuses that trailblazed the way for the Playstation and Xbox.

Playstation had Katuragi, Cerny and Kaz Hirai, Microsoft had Allard, Moore and Robbie Bach.

When they moved on, their respective consoles went to shit. 2011 for Microsoft and 2007 for Sony, with a brief revival under Kaz Hirai before going to shit again.

The Kinect did not doom the Xbox 360.
Half true... the 360 was suffering from a lot of things, the Kinect was just one of them, specifically because they were jumping on the motion control bandwagon that Nintendo started and that Sony also decided to jump on as well with their own motion control horseshit.

The Kinect, however, was still a tumor that Microsoft was trying to force onto everyone... so much so that it was pretty much a requirement at one point for the XBONE until they (rightfully) got bad press for it and quickly course corrected after.

AnyPS5 hit a new milestone after hitting 100% in shader instructions. The library functions currently stand at 85.45%.
is this the power of clankering? or only a fraction of it? either way SUFFAH SONY.

Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem - some fat fuck who is not fat anymore.

I didn't see it mentioned here, but there's a port for PCSX2 for jailbroken PS5 called PS5SX2 which makes PS5 run PS2 discs, it even supports USB DVD Drives for people with digital consoles, broken drives, or want to play PS1 games. Proofs from dev's twitter:

Other features include:
> Online play and local multiplayer for up to 4 players
> Save states to save & load games almost anywhere.
> Virtual memory cards up to 64 MB.
> Downloadable patches and cheats.
> Game-specific upscaling fixes.
> Phone-controlled settings via QR code.
> Custom overlays and screen borders.
> 9 language options.
> Fast-forward to skip videos.
> Support for multiple game formats and homebrew apps.
> Supports up to 8x upscaling on PS5 Pro & up to 6x frame generation.

And much more:

It may even run PS3 discs in the future, as shown on the dev's twitter:

But it cannot run PS1 games discs for obvious reasons. But for those who don't get it, PS1 games are on CDs, PS4 & PS5 can't read CDs. The PS3 had 2 separate lasers inside. One for CD’s & another for DVD’s / Blu-rays. Of course, that can possibly be solved by using external storage & USB DVD Drives.

TL;DR - Sony's claim that the reason they didn't have backwards compatibility was because it was an impossible Herculean task? Yeah, it was pure bullshit after all. As proven by the modding community & AI, we have it already in a year. Play truly has no limits, other than the ones Sony put on it, except when Sony chooses to anger its community.

Speaking of other jailbreak miracles, jailbroken PS5 can now run:
IP-TV.
Windows games.
Xbox 360 games.
Gamecube games.
RetroArch with 44 systems [GitHub].
PlayStation's humiliation ritual has finally reached it's peak. The jailbroken PS5s have their own store called Overdrive, which is essentially Sony's store but with all the games, updates, & DLC free. Proof from Twitter:

Sony killed the original GitHub, someone archived on Internet Archive (this is actually important cause it contains a necessary resources list & installation instructions), & that led to another GitHub. I'm posting last release & source code here just in case (except the tar.gz).

Now everyone can play PS5's massive library of games such Astrobot, the Astrobot spin-off, GoY, Vulvarine, &... Uh... You get the point!

Sony is not a learning animal.

They should know by now that there's no point in playing whack-a-mole with these kinds of endeavors, they tried it with the PSP and Vita and had to give up.

I can't wait for the feeding frenzy that will begin once GTA VI releases, every autist on the internet competing for the bragging rights of porting it over to PC first.

It's either that or PS5 emulation is in a playable state by the date the game ships out, forcing Rockstar to cuck Sony and release it on PC as quickly as possible to damage control.

Any way this turns out, it will be hilarious to watch.

IIRC, GTA VI may require a kernel update. Of course, that never stopped people from getting what they want.

Agreed, this truly might be the biggest "fuck around, find out" a corporation might've had in recent times.
I’m always up for shitting on Sony, but you know what, I’ll play devil’s advocate. For simplicity, let’s ignore PC.
  1. First, the original Xbox has title updates that are only available to download for a short period of time, making at least some of them lost media despite preservation efforts.
  2. Next, all major consoles start releasing digital games that are never available physically, meaning you have to have an online account to download them, so if you get banned, then you can’t access your games anymore. (The Wii’s “account” was the system itself, and though it was possible to get banned from playing online, I don’t think the Wii Shop had any bans.)
  3. The Vita, albeit for good reason, removes the ability to play physical PSP UMDs, leaving only digital games. This was after the PSP Go already removed the UMD drive.
  4. Game updates and DLC are now extremely common to the point where “complete” copies of a game with the full experience on the disc and no internet connection or online account required are extremely rare.
  5. Sony and Microsoft both require players to install discs to the console, hurting the idea of “saving hard drive space” as one of the key reasons to buy physical.
  6. Microsoft starts to experiment with releasing digital-only consoles with no disc drive.
  7. An increasingly large amount of games, including major AAA releases, are becoming digital-only and tied to an online account. Also, mobile games have been extremely popular for several years now and have worse ownership/availability issues than today’s console players could even dream of.
  8. More and more games are becoming online-only, vulnerable to being completely shut down and rendered unplayable whenever the publisher feels like it. Efforts to change this through law are popular but unsuccessful.
  9. Sony also starts making digital-only consoles, and even makes the PS5 Pro completely digital-only unless you buy a rare disc drive add-on.
  10. Sony finally rips off the band-aid and announces that they will stop making physical games. Now… NOW… is the point where people finally get upset and pretend the frog hasn’t been boiling for the last 20 years.
A lot of the fan reaction feels performative to me, like it’s something that’s been coming for years but they’re only getting upset now because for the first time ever (unless you’re from /v/), it’s finally considered cool to hate Sony.

Why 2011? Because of the Kinect? If so, I disagree. The Kinect did not doom the Xbox 360.
The Kinect killed the xbox not just because of the device, but what it was symbolic of:

  • MS shifted from hardcore gamer as their target audience to kids and casuals.
  • They ignored the core IPs they had created and forced, against most devs' wills, to make some slop motion game.
  • MS stopped being the confident leader of the pack and began chasing the fleeting fancy of the Wii for profit, signalling they know nothing about their product.
  • £500 million was poured into Kinect 1, with another £500 million lost in Kinect 2, plus losses from forcing studios to create games that didn't work and wouldn't sell.
  • It split the audience and market perception of what the Xbox was, something MS has never recovered from.
  • MS focused on what the casuals wanted - a fickle audience, and not what the hardcore gamers whom MS won dominance due to.
  • Worst of all, MS lied to their audience. They blatantly and arrogantly told them that Kinect worked, was the future and the real time demos were not pre-recorded videos that actors had rehearsed.
  • In turn, the audience showed MS that Kinect didn't work, should not be the future and that real time demos were pre-recorded (they were).
MS lost their audience, lied to them about the present (2011) and the future (Starting with Durango leaks in 2011). The gaming community; those like myself who had been massive Xbox fans up to this point, told MS that continuing in the direction they were going was suicide, that the Durango should be scrapped and all money invested into Kinect (and 3 OS's) should instead be used to create another, very powerful hardware platform with good games. MS ignored this, because those who took charge after Bach, Allard and Moore were empty suits and fucking retards.

Kinect was the death knell of the xbox. Every retarded decision made since

The digital push was brought on by the industry. They infested forums with shills and messaging designed to change the minds of gamers to move to the digital market which only benefits the devs/publishers.

Do you remember the messaging used? "Who wants to get up to change a disc all of the time?" "Digital is more convenient!". Absolutely retarded, especially in an age of small/restricted HDD space.

Now we're seeing the same messaging used as a pro for Physical Media, being touted as a negative of digital and pro of Streaming. "no downloads required with streaming!", "It doesn't take up space on your SSD!". Nobody should, but most consoomers will, fall for this messaging.

I have no sympathy for Sony, Rockstar, T2 or the vast majority of the people who buy GTA6 day one. We all know those servers are crashing and for the first few days it will be queues, like Diablo 2, a game that ran on potato PC's in the late 90s, has/had at launch a queueing system before you could play because of server space. I hate the current industry with a burning passion /rant.

Nah, it was brought on by convenience, same reason streaming became so popular because most people have no strong attachment to the media they consume and will always choose the path of least resistance for their hobbies.

85% of consumers weren't brainwashed by forums they don't even read, they started buying games digitally because it was easier and quicker than driving to the mall, finding a parking spot, walking to the store, finding the game you wanted (assuming it was in stock), buying it then travelling back home.

They bought digital because physical stores were closed, physical games' perks; manuals, cases, plug and play, were removed and consumers were locked into walled gardens. Not to mention the death of couch co-op and the browbeating of forced monthly subscriptions.

I don't agree that after 40 years of physical ownership, the market organically moved to digital despite it not being ownership, it being the same price as physical and waiting hours for it to download - often longer than nipping to the store.

The destruction of physical media in exchange for digital benefits the companies, not the customers.

Sony is falling down the stairs harder than Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. It's impressive how they got their user base to turn around and sodomize them. All hell will break loose once AnyPS5 hits 100% in library functions. Pair that with tools for recompiling PS1-PS3, and every exclusive is going straight to PC.
