You'll understand when you're older than you want to admit. Wait until somebody is talking about playing The Witcher 3 or Battlefield 4 or something as a little kid and you realize he's probably in his 30s.
You are talking about AGE. I am talking about REACH. MK walked so that GTA could run but San Andreas was the game breaker.

Some day, you are going to be posting on a forum, and some kid is going to say, "I remember playing the Witcher 3 on my PS4 in second grade, that was when RPGs really went mainstream," and your eye will twitch.

Mortal Kombat sold millions of cartridges and was in every movie theater and store arcade. This was back in the olden days where 1 cartridge = every kid in the neighborhood played it (neighborhoods still had kids back then). It was so popular with kids that they had to somehow make the movie PG-13, meaning nobody could be killed on screen. The movie grossed over $100m and sold over 20m tickets. In the USA, it sold more tickets than Braveheart, Dumb & Dumber, Bad Boys, Clueless, and Pulp Fiction. We had parent-teacher conferences about the dire threat of Mortal Kombat teaching kids it's okay to rip each other's spines out.

You don't think it was big because it was a faint memory by the time you were out of diapers.

If you’re younger, you have no idea the impact of MK at the time. It was at the cultural zeitgeist when i was an already functioning, conscious human being. Man, the panic over it was crazy in retrospect. Thanks for bringing back those memories

They've been sniffing the fart blasts.

Personal challenge: find a reasonable attractive woman in current game development. Bonus round: see if any Indians were involved as well. I’d have to think there’s a conflict of interest where Indians have to uglify women.
Does that also include Indians uglifying characters of their own race? That would explain how Unknown 9: Awakening's main character looks hardly like her face model:

Street Fighter 2 was basically the Fortnite of its era. Bigger actually. And then Mortal Kombat was Fortnite round 2. Nothing came close for some time for societal impact. Not Doom, not Mario 64 not GTA 3. We had to wait till Minecraft and Wii sports for that kind of cultural saturation. Even then we didn't get the same spread on the games dev side. Everyone had to take on Street Fighter 2. Most failed, some like SNK were pretty big. But only MK was up there

I know another vita hacker dev, rinnegatamante, had a major tard out a few months ago over people using AI to make ports that he tried to disable all his apps like a petulant child taking his ball home. He restored everything but out of anyone he's the last person who can get upset over the ethics of vibe coding when last year he made an update for his homebrew store that bricked every vita that had it installed.
Rinne was being a disingenuous nigger regarding that drama. The real issue people were initially mad about was that Rinne made some comments about the Moroccans borderhopping into Spain and wishing they could be shot and other anti-immigration sentiments in his Discord server. I don't have a problem with this, but what I do have a problem is with him throwing a bitch fit and shifting the blame to "fuggen vibe coders" to make himself look more sympathetic, especially when he himself used Claude Code on recent projects of his like his Doom 3 port. He's done some good work for the scene but he's absolutely insufferable and I don't care for anything he does going forward.

Not saying MK wasn't big. It was. Stop reading what wasn't written. What I said was that San Andreas ruined the industry because everyone tried to appeal to kids through similar tropes. A ton of games after it were open world with realistic graphics after it came out. Devs started marketing adult games to kids and for years had moved away from making kid friendly stuff. Even in the era of MK, there were more than enough kid friendly AAA games. That wasn't the case after GTA: SA.

Edit: typo

nothing makes me happier than seeing huge corpos get fucked due to their shitty practices, but just like how some people think that hating AI slop is substitute for an entire personality, I see the same people devoting the last 2 months of their lives to posting thousands of funnyjunk tier anti sony memes
i think its safe to say that everyone involved in the vicinity of this shit is a gay little homo and god will punish them

GTA: SA [...] taught the execs that they can get kids without child friendly stuff.

No, that was Mortal Kombat.

Not for my generation.

Smoking was promoted with cartoon characters. When it comes to not being "kid friendly" with games it was Mortal Kombat. Do you think that your generation was marketed to by a new set of executives who had no memory of Mortal Kombat?

Then the industry at large shouldn't make shitting on corpos more entertaining than the products and services they're expected to sell 99% of the time. Grifters feed what you give them, even if it's the remains of their own.

Of course the execs knew about MK. BUT after San Andreas, everyone wanted to be the new GTA. MK didn't take over the industry. GTA did. Ask yourself this: Which series releases their games as world wide events? MK has its fans and was really popular for a while. But GTA is an event everyone pays attention to and has been such after San Andreas. I didn't say that San Andreas invented marketing adult things to kids. I said that after it came out, kid friendly games went down as a percentage in kids' libraries. MK still left room for Sonic, Crash, Spyro and Mario. San Andreas did not.

Your claim: I think GTA: SA ruined the industry.
The supports:
1. It was the game everyone, including kids, were playing
2. and taught the execs that they can get kids without child friendly stuff.

The Ugly One recognized that the supports were met by Mortal Kombat. He was right.

Not to the same extend as San Andreas. It was the best selling game of the PS2. The most successful game of the most successful console carried more weight than anything else when the PS3/XB360 generation of games was being planned. It influenced what kind of games everyone wanted to make. There were MK clones (mature rated 2D fighting games) but not to this extend. GTA has been king ever since San Andreas and it bend the industry around it. Everyone wanted realistic graphics, open worlds and/or guns.

I remember my buddy and I mashing the shit out of SNES controllers to see if we could make secret moves happen. Neither of us had Nintendo Power or a strategy guide of any kind. It's stunning how, looking back on the late 1990s, the fighting game studios all decided to go for turbo-autist money with deeply complex, unforgiving fighting games that require memorizing I-Frame timings and crap like that instead of making fun, cool games.

MK didn't take over the industry. GTA did.
"Yeah, yeah, Michael Jordan was a big deal for his time, but Lebron James is what really showed people basketball could make money."

MK still left room for Sonic, Crash, Spyro and Mario. San Andreas did not.

yeah nintendo canceled Mario after 2004, Sunshine was the last Mario game, literally nobody has made anything other than open-world crime games since 2004

Maybe if the industry stopped producing literal garbage, there wouldn't be any reason to complain about it and laugh at the repeated failures? We're 6 years into the ps5, and it doesn't even have an average of one game per year so far. The N64 had a notoriously bare launch lineup, but it was corrected over the span of the 6 months after launch, and its game library wasn't a joke for 6 years instead.

Meanwhile we get developers having panic attacks due to being made fun of for shit tier products that they were proud of, publishers hiring therapists to be in office(this supposedly happened for AC shadows), marketing teams that have to come up with idiotic metrics to sound impressive instead of just using sales numbers, and executives seemingly clueless as to where billions of dollars have gone. It's not just Sony, but they're at the top of the pile for a representation of how shit the industry has gotten.
