There was nothing quite like it when Solid 1 hit and enough was built on its gameplay foundation to expand and keep the fanbase hooked, and MGS2 dropped right when gaming was becoming more accepted as a hobby to be discussed, within the same timeframe as GTA3 and the OG Xbox. It was a comparatively mature experience in terms of content in all senses of the word, and it had production values very few other games outside of RPGs and sports titles (which themselves were also niche-becoming-popular, the latter mostly due to expanding network play capabilities) could match. I don’t think pure stealth or stealth as a mandatory gameplay aspect at all times was really what it ever shot for - there’s a reason every game in the series has a very early dialogue with the player character’s support staff about needing to avoid combat and contact whenever and wherever necessary, only for a few gameplay moments later to inevitably be presented with a firearm.Probably get dogpiled for this but the MGS games weren't that great, there's so many better actual stealth games to be played. I guess they did well because of how cinematic they were and how different they were?
Legit, Splinter Cell mogged HARD, same with Thief.
