It is currently selling this well despite the fact it lacks 5 out of 6 major tentpole nintendo system franchises. At least one of these major tentpole franchises is confirmed for next year. What do you think is going to happen?
Mario, Zelda, Kirby, Pokemon, Smash, uhh… Fire Emblem?

God I hate how Fire Emblem is considered a major franchise. Imagine how much better things would be if the series had died with Awakening as originally intended.

Like I said. I'll wait and see.
You've already shifted from "The switch 2 is currently dropping off HARD" to "Well, maybe it's not, but 2 more weeks!".

Mario kart (literally bigger than the 2d and 3d mario games combined), 3d Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Smash, and as of the 3ds onward, Animal Crossing.

Anyways, to actually get this thread back on track somewhat, there's a pretty big difference between a $450 (now $500) console and a $1500+ console. Especially because it will take longer for games to stop releasing ps5 versions than it took for them to stop releasing ps4 versions.

My Brother in Christ, we're still getting PS4 versions of some new releases. Forgive the IGN link, but it bears repeating - we're at the point where the PS6 might soon be reality and we're still getting Last Gen releases.

Part of this is likely due to the obscene dev times literally everything has to have for some reason these days, but I'd like to imagine a part of it is that some of these games just won't break even without a Last Gen release, owing to how scuffed this entire console generation has been.

They still happen, but they're far from the norm. I predicted a couple years back that we'd get a few triple crossgen ps4/ps5/ps6 releases though. I'm talking where by default, games release on at least both ps5 and ps6 simultaneously, which for ps4/ps5 lasted until mid 2023, or over 3 and a half years. Development budgets are only higher than they were in 2020 when the ps5 launched, software sales on the ps5 are already abysmal, and are unlikely to get better as sony outright states they're not even attempting to grow their userbase anymore, but rather try and extract as much money from the remaining sycophants.

One person buying a $1500 system and spending an additional $1000 on microtransactions might be the same amount of money for sony as four people buying a $500 system and a couple (digital, of course) games each, but for publishers? Let's just say the layoffs are only beginning.

To be fair all of these are either sports games or indie titles. It took an excruciating 13 years but the PS4 is approaching that end-of-life stage for Sony consoles where the only consistent releases are FIFA or digital only indie titles. Hell, even 2K27 isn't coming out on PS4. It will take the PS5 much longer to die considering this generation didn't really take off until 2023 and the PS6 will most likely be a $900 monstrosity that no one except the rich and stupid will purchase day one.

the PS6 will most likely be a $900 monstrosity
We'll be "lucky" if the stripped-down, handheld ps6 model is "only" $900. Barring a complete crash of ai and RAM and other component prices (or if sony changes their mind from what they've repeatedly stated and end up selling it at a significant loss after all), $1500 isn't just a hyperbolic guess, it's the floor, the bare minimum price.

I know it’s a 2D platformer, but…

A companion handheld for the PS6 actually would be awesome if it had its own games. Instead of being a digital only shittier Steam Deck where you can play God of War: Laufey at 720p 25fps
While still rumor, the rumor is, based on the specs that we know about it, it might literally only play ps6 titles through cloud streaming.

This really only happened because people weren't able to transition to PS5 due to Covid shortages. Once the next generation becomes a viable purchase past-gen development tapers off because next-gen graphics get people excited excited to buy games again. Time will only tell whether console price will be enough to delay PS6 adoption, people have proven that they will go into debt to buy this shit.

I'm just gonna be honest, that's not correct. First, "muh covid shortages" is a really dumb argument, for the first couple years, they were shipping well above the rate of the ps4, with it falling behind only happening later into its life. There are exactly two reasons why ps4 versions happened for so long. One, development was getting more costly. Two, ps5 owners don't fucking buy games, or at least at a sustainable rate even if development costs were stagnant instead of rising.

There's a reason why when you look at the top selling ps5 games on wikipedia, over half of them list the source as "alinea analytics", a spinoff of a crypto blog that pivoted to "video game industry analytics" because they were actually a spinoff made for blogging about nft games (and we know how that whole sub-industry went) that outright admits that they do not actually have any sources. Because sony is VERY hush about ps5 software sales, and on the rare occasion we do get them, they're either misleading fluff with no hard numbers (think sony saying that ghost of yotei's launch, black friday, and holiday sales combined slightly outpaced tsushima's launch alone, but using weasel words to not be blatant that that's what they were saying) or utterly dire like astrobot only selling 1.5 million despite having the remaining budget from the concord marketing account pumped into its own marketing. The highest one we have an official source for is spiderman 2 at 12 million, and that's AFTER absolutely massive bundling efforts. You cannot blame "covid shortages" for the ps5 still not moving software in 2026. Sony pivoted hard to live service, and it shows, the ps5 is used primarily for 3 things. Niggers buying one as a status symbol and using it as a $500 roku stick except when a "new" nba2k comes out (or swap niggers for euros and nba for fifa), kiddies playing fortnite, and pedos grooming fortnite kiddies on roblox.

This is not something that's going to get better with ps6, in fact, it will get significantly worse. Development costs continue to rise, even as there's already been a glut of layoffs the past couple years. A $500 console is not an impulse buy, at the very least, it's something that needs to be carefully budgeted around, if not saved up for for a couple weeks, a month, or even a couple months. A $1500 console is something that demands saving up for it ahead of time for the average family, if it's even possible to be budgeted for by them at all. And again, sony is outright stating that they are not looking to expand their current userbase, or even keep it stable, they are looking to more heavily monetize a smaller number of users. The transitory period when it was sort of just expected for ps4 games to have a ps3 version too was a little under 2 years. For ps5 it was around 3 1/2 years, and yes, while it still does happen, it's much more of an outlier. For ps6? If it still launches in 2027, I doubt it's going to be uncommon to see ps5 versions of releases in 2032.
