People need to be reminded, back in the early 00s day, frathouse douchefucks did not play videogames or consume electronic entertainment. You don't understand hardware limitations and user consumer experiences. A "potato" PC is a PC with components outdated, a potato from 2030 will still have components from 2015 or earlier, what wouldn't have is the same amount of RAM... Like it happens now with potato PC that have I3 - I5 processors from 2005 -2010.
The same logic applies for all types of software and regarding emulation GPU architecture is the most specific requirements.

Only on the north American markets and due to lower prices (relatively) and some exclusives (fucking Skyrim and fallout were massive sells for Xbox). Sony dominated internationally though. Europe, Africa and South America were markets for Sony due to better logistics and better trade deals due to the amount of products they shipped (they did everything electronic like mp3s, laptops, TV's, etc.) so they had open markets in all parts of the world and was easy for them to push the PS1, PS2 and PS3 with almost zero competition from Nintendo/Microsoft in early years.
Nowadays is deadlocked again because of prices and indie games being better than AAA games. Also MMORPG are dying, micros transactions are not being profitable anymore, dlc are even less content full and development time is way to long.
GTA 6 will break the industry. Literally will be the tipping point of gaming, people will buy only GTA 6 and the whole gaming market will crash.
Sony should do something similar for PS4 and PS5 discs, especially considering that there is going to be a PS6 handheld, which is not going to use BluRays to load games

I've heard rumors that third parties and partners are pissed at sony right now, sony apparently told them that this would all blow over in like a week, and they paid good money to be featured on official playstation social media channels, and every post gets zero attention for what it's actually talking about.
I don't know if related or not, but I've been collecting all the physical copies of the old RE games the last year (big shocker) and since this announcement, everything seems to have gone up 10-25% on eBay.
