This is true to a point, but only because of increasing hardware costs, and a lack of games actually being produced for these systems. Take a look at the library of something like the ps2, ps3, or xbox 360 5-6 years into its lifespan, and compare it to the library of the current playstation and xbox, as well as the hardware price having gone up instead of a hardware revision bringing costs down. Joe Sixpack still exists, but doesn't want to spend $900 on a box after a half decade that only plays a dozen games.
