The 4k board already means that it would essentially be a new system because that would mean capabilities that the normal switch could not do. Having a Pro version of the switch with something like that would cause a rift in the user base. The DS line was succeeded by the 3DS, the switch's successor would do something similar.

It would probably have backwards compatibility. Which all the other systems do.
Kill yourself.

Except it does as shown in the video(s).
What you gonna do if Dragon Quest 12 is (likely) revealed to come out on Switch? Kill yourself ?

Hopefully.

Uh, having capabilities beyond the base model is kind of the entire point of a pro model lmao.

Nintendo didn't care about rifts before with GBC, DSi, N3DS, huh? And they didn't care with add-ons either, such as Famicom Disk System, Satellaview, 64DD, and eReader.

The only reason they might not do a Switch Pro is if they have market data indicating they shouldn't. For some reason GBA didn't get a "pro" model like the other handhelds did, so there's a chance Switch may not, but odds are high they will.

GBA got the SP which was essentially a Pro model because it had a backlight after Nintendo swearing up and down that "it wasn't feasible".

That's not the same

It would be closer in example to the Gameboy and Gameboy Color. GBC had shit that would not run on an original gameboy.

The DS when it launched had a GBA slot, but also it's own game slot. DS games did not work on the GBA.

True but it feels like more of a technicality. Although, didn't that grant it sleep mode as well?

Sure but do you retract your nonsense about how a Switch Pro would actually be a "new system" just because it has "capabilities that the normal switch could not do"? N3DS wasn't a new system so why would a Switch Pro be?

I'm not sure. I was so salty about the SP after Nintendo swearing up and down that they couldn't do a backlight that I didn't buy a Nintendo system new again until the Wii with Remote Plus. They always release a new model of their system at some point. The only reason the Wii U didn't get one is it flopped so badly.

GBA was also only current for 3 years, not really long enough for a pro model to possibly happen. It's crazy how influential the GBA was despite just being a flash in the pan that got replaced by the Nintendo DS.

I remember some talk about the Game Boy Evolution, the next one should the DS flop, but it never got out of planning stages, or something. The 2020 leaks showed off some prototype designs that were basically just the lower half of an original DS.

iirc the dilly-o with Nintendo being so hesitant about lights on the Game Boy were because of battery life concerns, or at least that's what I remember reading before I found out about the Game Boy Light from '98. The GBA SP was the first GB released worldwide to include a light, but also the first to come with a rechargeable battery, despite how you could always get rechargeable AAs, so I figure it's just Nintendo being autistic like usual.

Nope. Clapping the SP shut didn't suspend the game at all, it just kept running. Even the screen stayed lit up. Some games did have sleep modes, though they were hokey - they just blanked out the screen and ran the minimal amount of software possible to keep battery drain to a minimum, and could wake up when you pressed a button combination. Honestly, pretty useless, considering you could forget and accidentally switch off your system.

GBA sleep mode games could put any model of GBA to "sleep". DS had a real sleep mode for DS games, but not for GBA. They'd keep running just like an SP if you clapped it shut.

Yeah, even Wii got that mini console. Wii U is probably the only one without a different version in any capacity. Which is weird, you'd think they'd want to salvage it by redesigning it and dropping the price.

That's cool, I'll have to check that out. I love abandoned concepts and shit.

since this is the kinda shit I love reading about, off the top of my head:
  • N64 didn't get a revision at all - there were a lot of different colors, but were no different than a launch N64. closest thing was the RAM Expansion Pak that increased the RAM from 4mb to 8mb
  • Gamecube didn't get a slim version
  • of course Virtual Boy didn't get a revision, lol
Also, the only Nintendo console where the revision was actually better than the launch one was the Japanese AV Famicom - basically the JP equivalent of the Western toploader, which had modular controllers and AV support. American frontloader NESes had those from the beginning.

The downsides of every Nintendo revision:
  • Toploader NES: no AV out - required an RF switch. also had a visual artifact on screen, the kind you wouldn't notice until someone points it out to you and then you'll see it forever
  • SNES Jr.: no eject button - similar visual artifact to the toploader NES (faint vertical line on screen iirc)
  • Gamecube: got a silent revision that removed the digital AV port, meaning you're stuck on 480i. Older GameCubes could use this with component cables for progressive scan
  • Wii Mini: one USB port, no SD card slot, no internet connectivity whatsoever, no Gamecube support (despite being a toploader), no GCN controller & memory card support. this thing fuckin sucks
  • Switch Lite: no modular joy-cons, no dock, no digital game sharing with your full-size Switch if you have one, and no TV-out; this is permanently a portable
Their revisions of their portables are usually upgrades or sidegrades, though there are oddities here and there - GB Micro couldn't play GB&C games, and DS Lite's GBA slot let GBA carts awkwardly stick out.

Oh yeah, I forgot about N64 not having another model (and forgot about VB entirely lol), but NGC actually had one with DVD capability or something, but I think it was a Japanese exclusive.

It did - the Panasonic Q, though in my head that fits in with those really rare oddball versions of consoles like that Sharp TV set with a built-in NES

It's all official, it's just, well, a TV set with a built-in NES that you can't hook up to a different TV set. Interesting, but very rare and not worth the absolute fortune they go for.

Honestly, I'm kinda surprised these kinds of things aren't more common. When I first heard of the PlayStation TV, I figured it would be something exactly like that, instead of, uh, a Vita microconsole. Like, why not build in a low-end game console? Smart TV CPUs suck, but even something as light as a Vita could give a much smoother user experience, and a way to play some games, just, right there. Like come on Sony, nobody buys Bravias because they cost a fortune. Slap a PS4 in them as a bonus.

Dang, I'm not the biggest NES fan but that's just neat. I wanna play on one.

When I heard of PSTV I thought it was going to be like a Vita but with a bigger emphasis on streaming. Instead I think it actually lacked some streaming apps the regular Vita had. Another inane decision by Sony with the Vita.

With UE5 it would just ramp it up further you can already see what they're doing with the lava.
That's pre-rendered you mong. I bet you believed the Killzone 2 and Motorstorm trailers were actual game footage.

One of the defining features of Dragon Quest is Toriyama's ugly turnip head abominations, they're not going to throw that away. With DQ11, "that's just how UE4 rendered them", what? What?

If localization means making it for the west then tons of anime since the 70's and 80's onwards was made for the west, including Dragonball. Why else would they show it on TV? TV was a streaming service like Netflix and eventually releasing movies on VHS, a year after they had been in theaters, was just a trojan horse to fool you into a buying a Sony TV that serves up ads for walkmans.

Here's what I'm talking about
11's opening demonstrates this, the ultra smooth animation with that bit of realism just makes Toriyama's style feel a bit off in places. It's not like 8 where it wasn't at any risk at infringing on realism.

Now I spent like 200 hours in the game so it's not as jarring to me as it once was.

But them upping the realism is just going to further add to that unbalance. I mean especially if they aim for edgy or dark. If 12 was clearly going for a celshaded look like Guilty Gear or the DBZ games that would be a bit different. But that's no celshading in the lava or ground.
