Prove the actual design and production of DQ12 is being made with that in mind. And no, marketing is separate from the product itself, so you can't cite increased/improved marketing to prove that the team is actually making the game with the marketing goals in mind.

Proof, let's see it.
Proof. Let's see it.
This man couldn’t even give you pictures of a bookshelf; the task you’re both asking for is nigh herculean to Moira.

I'm still waiting for the "fact" that Westerners have been "saving" Jrpgs since the late 90s since it's blatantly false.
I never phrased it as saving, I said they were in many cases buying the lion's share of copies. Japan has primarily switched to mobile games.

Japan in general spends 1/3rd of the global spending in relation to mobile games. it's why Sony is expanding their mobile division further and wants to have around 12 titles for mobile/PC.

Here's the "proof" I could find that DQ12 is "aimed at the West".

"Officially titled Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, the brief teaser trailer shows a hellish-looking landscape of rock and flames, and features the tagline “what is the purpose of life?” Not exactly the cheery vibe Dragon Quest is known for, and series creator Yuji Horii suggests via translator that this is “Dragon Quest for adults”.

Horii also hinted that character’s choices will have a big effect on how the game plays out, but it’s unclear whether that’s just a story theme or if this means Dragon Quest is going full Mass Effect. The team is definitely taking cues from Western development in one way, though – the game will run on Unreal Engine 5, building on the success of Dragon Quest XI in Unreal 4."

Apparently "aimed at adults" = "aimed at the West".

Moira is a fucking retard and is starting to make me think they deserve their own Lolcow thread.

This will go about as well as trying to make one on Hollywood Hulk Hogan

Also the thing you missed was that Dragon Quest in Japan skewed towards all ages so even kids could pick it up, where as RPGs in the west do skew more toward an older range with pokemon being the exception(or not depending on your perspective)

He's an ancient oldfag in the good graces of the mods, I don't know about you though.

I think you're just trolling anyway, nobody could be this hard of a dickrider for Soyny, let alone the other retarded shit you say (like Power Rangers owes its success to "diversity" lmao).

Still waiting on proof, guess I'll be here a while...

All the kids in Japan that originally played those games are now in their 40s and 50s you fucking dipshit retard.

I'm pretty sure that with Dragon Quest release dates, they make sure the games aren't released during a weekday or on a workday in Japan, before they did this so many people must have been playing the games that it had a massive impact on productivity and school attendance, it's just really that popular over there that it becomes like a national holiday.

Square knows that their main target is in Japan and it always will be in Japan for many years to come, western markets tend to be an afterthought, as there isn't any sign of DQ10 offline releasing in the west (yet) but not totally neglected, since the DQ3 Remake will be releasing simultaneously worldwide, because they know how popular 3 is.

"Taking cues from Western development" = using prefabbed game engines built by an American company, as opposed to an in-house one like Japanese companies love to do. Makes sense, too, since I guess UE is tried and tested, and they don't want to risk building a Dragon Quest game on Luminous Engine, and get Tabata's slimy fingers all over their most important franchise.

Sounds to me like they're just playing it very safe with DQ, which is exactly the right way to go with such a franchise. Dragon Quest fans expect a Dragon Quest game, and a Dragon Quest game is a very particular thing.

Honestly I'm really curious if they'll opt for the character designs to be similar to the movie

The one thing that kind of gets in the way of Dragon Quest internationally, is that people are more familiar with Dragonball.

That'd be foolish, and if anything Toriyama helps DQ because people are more familiar with DB already.

When DQ11 came out people were slightly offput with how the characters moved in 3d and that they looked a little off but as they played the game they got used to it. But that was mostly the case with how UE4 rendered stuff out.

With UE5 it would just ramp it up further you can already see what they're doing with the lava. I think they're definitely going to change the character proportions a bit from what the typical norm of dragon quest is.

Final Fantasy did this and replaced main character design artists too.

I mean I don't think they'll go Full Berserk or something like that, but they're going to probably resemble closer to what the movie had. It's still distinctly Dragon Quest but it's not done in Toriyama's style. Hell they're already changing the Dragon Quest logo to have that fiery XII in the background. Usually the games kept the Roman Numerals close to the same font.

I mean how many styles of Links have we gone through? This doesn't really hurt long standing series to have visual refreshes.

The only way I see them moving away from Toriyama for the mainline games is if he retires, there's simply no other good reason to do so after all this time. If they do, it certainly won't be because Toriyama's style was hindering them due to Dragon Ball existing or whatever lol.

Amano was only the artist for the first 6 games, and even as far back as the first one there were other designers working on characters (enemies mostly). It's a bit different than suddenly changing out one of the most visually unique art styles after a dozen games spanning across 40 years on a whim.

I think they're clearly looking to try and redefine dragon quest with this one.

That and games like Dragon Quest Treasures are already not using his style for the in game models.

The logo is even different from other Dragon Quest games. Even Builders didn't even have as drastic a redesign.

Just shaking the series up a little bit doesn't mean they're firing Toriyama and westernizing a mainline DQ game LOL

I mean, I guess this is clown world and Square is in charge, so anything could happen, but don't bet on it.

Just like how the mention of Unreal Engine 5 somehow means "better graffix hurr" and obligatorily going on PS5 despite we have yet to see further info and screenshots.
Not to mention that Dragon Quest has a decades-long history of releasing their mainline games on the popular/successful console systems in Japan

There's been a bit of a revival of turn based games in general due to corona.

Now a shitload of people are more familiar with Dice Rolls and other shit relating to turn based combat. There's a Dungeons and Dragons revival for 2023 that hasbro is planning and they already had success with games like Hero Quest. This also isn;t factoring in stuff that's still being actively developed for like BG3. That and media based around tabletop podcasts is already a thing. More or less there's a whole wave of this stuff coming.

The next switch has a board with some level of 4k capabilities. I'm pretty sure Nintendo was aware what issues UE4 caused for the system.

People thought Monster Hunter World would bomb and that had way more drastic changes done to it after being a mostly Japan only thing for years. But then it did most of it's sales overseas.

World ripped out the floorboards when it came to the series combat, made things way less clunky. It felt like a different game while keeping some level of familiarity.

Are we having two different conversations?
