Not really no, the most in demand version of the PS5 is the one with the disc drive.

The Digital Only one has mostly sold out of necessity in more instances and they're the ones that turn up used way more frequently.

Compare it to the wii-u which was the last actual failure of a system(prior to that, that title was held by the dreamcast). Nintendo would have killed for it to do as well as the PS5 is doing.

Nintendo would have killed for it to do as well as the PS5 is doing.
lol the PS5 is still doing much worse (in overall amount of game sales & attach rate as well) than BOTH the WiiU and the Dreamcast experienced in their first year of existence

It's entirely fair at this point to assume there won't be a lot of japanese third-parties coming on PS5 in the future

Like it's entirely fair at this point to assume there won't be a lot of japanese third-parties coming on PS5 in the future
If that's happening that's going into 2026 and beyond. That's not a thing even within the next two years since there's stuff already getting put into 2024.

With Tales of Arise doing as well as it did that early and Elden Ring now garnering attention, that's way way more stuff that the PS5 had going for it than both the PS3 and PS4 combined when they were both a year old. We don't even have Final Fantasy 16, the second part of 7R, out or the new Dragon Quest. And we already have things like Star Ocean coming out for the PS5.

Atlus is going to be promoting Persona 6 and it's assorted games and those will definitely be on the PS5.

I wouldn't be using the Japanese market as a barometer because it's never been the deciding factor in the past due to it's small size. The playstation handhelds did bad everywhere else except Japan and that caused releases to get cut globally. Most of the Japnese devs are now targeting western markets due to the fact that they'll buy non-mobile games in droves. Sega, Square, bandai, are all big third parties that have a ton of subsidiaries.

Are these disc copies sold.

Digital stuff is far more popular nowadays. I couldn't tell you the last time i bought a game on disc.

Dude I own the games, they were abolute shit for the first year of PS3 and PS4 had nothing. The game quality for the PS5 is well above what both systems had within their first year.
From what I remember the PS3 had next to nothing adding to the gigantic price tag back in the day and REALLY needed at least MGS4 to get momentum.
The PS4 got memed hard as a Bloodborne box in the beginning. Was the remaster of The Last of Us not one of the first games on it while it was not even a year old?
I think the big problem is that no-one jumps into the next generation anymore and make cross platform titles.

That's pretty much correct, because the first game I got for the PS4 was TLOU Remastered because I held off on the PS3 title due to the DLC not being included.

PS3 had jack and shit for a long long ass time. I got Resistance at launch and while it was Ok there was not a whole lot going for the system. Stuff like Afrika came around the time before trophies were fully implemented(the US version of Afrika has it's own patch while the international versions did not have trophies) and that was two years after launch. The system had an awful first 2-3 years.

The PS5 at this point in time has a shitload of better games than the PS4 and PS3 even before factoring in backwards compatibility. That alone is why I really can't say it's worse off, it's had a very strong start than the last two systems and it has a whole ton more coming out for it, not only that they're from genres that I've bought since the original PS1.

PS4 was the "Bloodborne machine" in the since that it had pretty much no other worthwhile exclusives on it for like its first two or three years. As that list @BananaSplit showed, it was still getting games, and they were still selling, they were just all ports and multiplats that you could get on other machines. But despite Marissa Moira's constant handwringing about the PS5 having more "better games" (it doesn't), sales are pitiful, even for good games like Demon's Souls.

Lol, the fact that the ps5's claim to fame is an overpriced glorified remaster of an obscure ps3 game that came out in 2009 is sad. As someone who loves Demon's Souls, getting a ps5 for that game isn't worth it.

I think bloodborne did 2 million by the end and Demon's Souls remake pulled about 1.4 million, they're both pretty comparable especially since it looks like Demon's Souls will reach that 2 million mark as well. Elden Ring is also coming out and Sony wants to have exclusive Souls games after that. I really can't hate on more Souls games, especially since nobody else seems to be throwing money at the genre for exclusives.

And it certainly has better games, it always took fucking eons to get worthwhile RPGs on the console. Be it ports or otherwise, but within it's first year it already had multiple to pick from.

I don't think people remember stuff like Orphan or Summoner and how godawful they were. But those were the PS2's first RPGs. Then you had stuff like Dark Cloud which was touted as a Zelda Killer and that never took off (but the sequel was much better than the original). I mean they did finally nail a competing Zelda formula with God of War 2018.

Elden Ring isn't even exclusive either. And while Bloodborne may get a sequel, chances are it will be coming to PC anyway, just like Demon's Souls is already rumored to. And other Souls games will almost certainly be multiplat.

Looking at those lists of games, the PS5's first year of game releases is not markedly better than of its predecessors, and in fact, could be said to be just as weak because the vast majority of its top selling games are third party multiplats that I could get on PC or another system, which was also true of the PS4 and PS3. At least with the Wii U, Switch, and Dreamcast, most of their bestsellers, and, by extension, their best games, were First Party titles you could only get on those systems. The PS5 may have better representation of some specific genres, but that is counteracted by the fact that I could those titles on another system; I don't NEED a PS5 to get them. And this is reflected in game sales; the PS5's best selling game in Japan for its first year is Resident Evil: Village, and it didn't even break 100,000 copies sold. That's pitiful.

The resident evil 8 sales were misreported. they were around 300,000

As far as what's been the most active game on the system, Fornite has been by a very wide margin. It has a higher activity rate than the PS4 apparently. I also wouldn't count stuff being thrown on PC because that's going to eat into their storefront and PSN subscription. The whole thing about PC ports has been to draw people into getting hardware and a subscription of either PSN, PSNow, or PS+. That's been the strategy from the start and it's going to be stuff that has other media tie-ins like TV shows. It's why uncharted got a port. Horizon was supposed to have a TV show by now but that got pushed way back due to covid.

They actually have a list of most played games by online data collection.

What this seems to show is that it's going to be a matter of convenience, most of PC's played games are all multiplayer as well but PC has more hurdles to still jump than a console. Nothing on steam's most played games are single player related. So it looks like people are still going to opt for a PS5 rather than a PC except in situations with games like Counter Strike.

Woopty-fucking-do, that's still terrible, as the article you link to attests.

Playstation PC (and Sony's own recent actions) say otherwise. There's money to be made on PC, more than on Playstation, and Sony have realized that.

The whole thing about PC ports has been to draw people into getting hardware and a subscription of either PSN, PSNow, or PS+.
I don't know of single person who has run out and gotten PSN, PSNow, or PS+ because Horizon: Zero Dawn was on Steam. Its going to take a lot more than few games released to Steam to make extra money (which is the real reason they were released there, especially Days Gone) to get people to buy into Sony's shitty paid ecosystem.

So it looks like people are still going to opt for a PS5 rather than a PC except in situations with games like Counter Strike.
That's a large leap in logic that nothing factually backs up. Of course multiplayer games are the most popular on Steam; you can play multiplayer on Steam for free. But that doesn't translate to no one playing single player games. Forza Horizon 5 is also on that list at number 10, and while it has a multiplayer component, if its like the previous Forza Horizons, it is just as playable in single player. If you look at the full list of the top 100 games, you will see things like Skyrim, Hearts of Iron IV, Fallout IV, RDR2, EU IV, Civ V, Dark Souls 3, Stellaris, the Witcher III, Divinity: Original Sin 2, etc. The thing about multiplayer games is that they are designed to be played for long periods of time, constantly, with other people, especially MMORPGs, which also do well on that list. Single player games are usually designed to only be played once, primarily, and even the ones with replay value will still only be designed with a limited number of unique playthroughs in mind. Single player games will never have a large number of concurrent players outside of the initial launch period, unless they are those few special games that keep bringing in new people and remaining concurrently well played, like Witcher III.

Woopty-fucking-do, that's still terrible, as the article you link to attests.

Playstation PC (and Sony's own recent actions) say otherwise. There's money to be made on PC, more than on Playstation, and Sony have realized that.

The playstation on PC is just a branding thing, they're not pulling in all that much compared to a console+subscription.

That actually said this shortly before Horizon first was proted over.
PSB: PlayStation Productions is out to expand the reach of PlayStation IP by bringing it to mediums like film and TV. There’s not a lot of info out there — can you tell us about the strategy?
HH:
I would say the purpose of creating PlayStation Productions is to introduce our stories, characters, and worlds to new audiences while making content our fans will be proud of. The approach is to bring together film and TV directors, work with people who have a ton of respect and passion for our gaming IP.

We’ve got IP dating back for more than 25 years now, and we’ve been delighted to find quite a few PlayStation fans among these film and TV creators. What I’ve also come to understand is that our IP is perfectly suited to adapt to linear storytelling.

In a film and TV market, where IP and franchises are king, we’ve built up one of the most exciting IP libraries in entertainment…. I should mention that we are including the game makers in this expansion process. We want to ensure that we’re very authentic in that approach.

It’s really important that the game makers are a big part of it. We’re not just creating direct copies of our games, we’re really making an effort to adapt their stories to best fit that medium.

it's to draw people into the playstation ecosystem. That's what the PC ports are a part of. A ton of people claiming that Sony is making boatloads of money off of PC ports is just Mustard Race types hoping and wishing that their platform finally stands uncontested and they can rest easy that their 1000 owned unplayed digital games' supremacy shall never be threatened by a game daring to appear on another platform and making them doubt and question that the grass could be greener on the other side.

I mean I've got a few mid to high PCs myself but I'm not surrendering physical media. Fuck I have every type of physical drive connected by USB for stuff.

What is with you and constantly regurgitating marketing speak. And what does any of the shit about TV and film bullshit have to do with them putting games on PC?

If Sony was making no money putting games on Steam, they wouldn't bother porting over games like Days Gone to Steam. As I said, nobody is going to the Playstation ecosystem because a few games get ported to PC. If anything, it will have the exact opposite effect. There has been no massive jump in console sales, game sales, PS+ subscriptions, or the like when they put Horizon: Zero Dawn on Steam, for example.
