according to my fanfiction, they will be moving on from classic sonic and instead make a Sonic Advance/Rush/Sonic 4-esque 2D Game with the Modern Designs, and an Adventure style game (no boost) with a focus on lore.
FTFY. Unless you can provide sources for these "leaks".

I full believe the Colours remaster will be a thing. It's been stuck on the Wii for so long and SEGA must know by now how much people talk about it online, makes sense to port it to the newer consoles. The question is though: Will it include content from the DS version?

as i heard the source is a nintendo leaker who has correctly predicted some directs or smash characters IIRC but even these kinds of leakers have been wrong in the past, so take them with a huge grain of salt.
OK, this is pretty big, so I'm gonna dissect this one by one (WHILE taking it with a grain of salt the size of Jupiter, of course).
If the logo wasn't a dead giveaway, Modern Sonic will be the focus of this anniversary. That detail is going to be extremely disappointing to numerous people, which is understandable, but here's why:

Classic Sonic and his series of games are seen as "old hat" at SEGA. From what I understand, Classic coming back is and was never going to be a permanent thing. Yes, I know what you're thinking, Mania was a huge success critically, and that team is immensely talented, but the thing is, SEGA doesn't want the franchise being "defined" by a 2D sprite based game that was done by fan/indie developers.

They want the games they make themselves to be the "shining beacon" of the franchise, for lack of a better word. One other big point is frankly, Classic Sonic has more than been taken care of, at this point, by fans. There are literally hundreds of ongoing fan games being made, such as Sonic Mania Megamix, Sonic Galactic, Sonic Roboblast 2, Sonic 2 HD, etc. SEGA has come out and publically supported all of these fan works, they have no need for a Mania sequel, because fans are already doing those, and then some, from their perspective.
That.....makes a lot of sense, the more I think about it. I mean, think about how many ROM hacks and fangames there are out there that actually do a bang-up job of capturing the "feel" of Classic Sonic, for lack of a better word. "Leave it to the fans" is a pretty logical step, as far as I'm concerned, and a lesson which SOME people desperately need to learn (*cough* Nintendo *cough*) On the other hand, this reasoning for no more classic Sonic seems petty as hell, like "These guys made a more successful game than ours so fuck them, their game and the Sonic they worked with, there will be no more! Hmph!".
-The Split of 2D and 3D Sonic:

I have heard from that this point on, that they're going back to 2D and 3D gameplay being the sole dimensions in their respective games, which is an extremely good thing. The past 15 or so years has had Sonic Team's games all be a hybrid of the two, but in that execution, they have realized neither dimension has been able to be used to it's full potential, so instead of trying to make people happy with one title that pleases no one, they're making two.
"Pleases no one"? Uh, excusez-moi? Generations and Colors are pretty highly regarded IIRC (Generations more so than Colors). It's just that Forces screwed up by making the level design too bland and the controls too heavy. Agree with the rest, though.
-A New Sonic Collection:

This one I've heard of multiple times. I don't know exactly what's in it, but will be a celebration of 30 years of the blue blur, with games that haven't been in circulation in many years. Sonic Advance, Pocket Adventure and Sonic R all seem like likely inclusions here. SEGA/M2 are likely making this in tandem. If I were a betting man, I'd say this one will release in June, just in time for the 23rd of June. Apparently, there should be a mix of ports and remasters in here. It also should be on everything, including PC and Switch. This collection, set for a release this year, WILL feature the Retro Engine remakes of Sonic 1&2! 60 fps, full widescreen, with all of the added content. I'll have another update on this before too long.
The Retro Engine Sonic 1 & 2 remakes on console/PC?! Praise Godbear if true!
A New Mario and Sonic Olympics Title:

Okay, this one is pretty messy. This apparently is in development, but considering how the pandemic has fucked everything Olympics related, the IOC internally scrambling over a potential cancellation of the Summer Games, and the extremely controversial nature of China holding next year's Winter Games, there's a very good chance that this one may be cancelled altogether. I also strongly believe SEGA and Nintendo want no part in this controversy. It'll all hinge on how this pandemic and the situation with China shakes out in the next few months. I'm 50/50 on this one happening, at the moment.
BS. For the reasons stated above, and didn't we just HAVE a M&S Olympics game come out in 2019?! Why would they need to make another one?!
-A New 2D Sonic:
What I know:

-It's a 2D game, featuring the modern cast, likened to Sonic Advance/Rush.

-From what I understand, it's not internally SEGA developed.

-It's not Nintendo/console exclusive. People want that, for some reason?

-I don't know how many there are exactly, but there are apparently multiple playable characters.

-It's nearing the end of development, seems to be a summer release, which would give enough space between that and the 3D game.
The "some reason" being that the Advance/Rush games were Nintendo exclusive, so therefore this one must be too! This conveniently ignores the fact that the reason that they were Nintendo exclusive was because they were mainly handheld games and Nintendo pretty much was the only game in town when it came to that. Aside from that, I'm pressing X to doubt on this one, for reasons I'll get into at the end of this little spiel.
The Next 3D Sonic:

Okay, so this is the big one. This is a make or break title for a lot of people, and it's easy to understand why. I'll do the best I can to elaborate on what I've heard.

What I know:

-It is NOT a boost game. SEGA has realized that they've done all they can with that formula, so this is allegedly a return to more of an Adventure/traditional platformer, which is seen as having much more long term potential.

-Full 3D, no hybrid nonsense here.

-Features return of the spin dash in 3D and character upgrades.

-There are more playable characters than just Sonic, but I wasn't given specifics as to who those were. Tails/Knuckles/Shadow all seem like valid possibilities.

It'll be the first game conceptualized by the "Sonic Pillar" in the US.

-SEGA CS2 R&D has had a number of new hires, post Forces, so a number of the devs involved are brand new to the series. "Sonic Team" is literally nothing more than just a brand name now. No idea if it'll be in the marketing or not.

-The game will be cross-gen, should be on every console under the sun, and a Holiday 2021 release is still on track, last I heard. However, given the very obvious circumstances going on around the world, there is still a chance it may slip into 2022. They're willing to give this game all the time it needs.

-This game is a NOT a tie-in to the movies at all. Paramount is doing their own thing with Sonic.
>Sega returning to the Adventure formula, which is what the fans have wanted for years
>"willing to give this game all the time it needs"
>Sega willing to hire new blood for the Sonic games

Press-X-to-Doubt-Meme.png

I've never pressed X so hard and so fast (hueh) in all my life. Of all of the fanfiction-esque "leaks" to have ever come out of video game-dom, this is easily one of the most fan-fiction-esque, "MY UNCLE WORKS AT NINTENDO AND HE TOLD ME".....tier leaks I've ever seen.

Notice how he said that the 2D game supposedly in development is slated for a summer release. If so, don't you think we would've heard of it by now? And then there's this little gem:
One last tidbit I have, is that they are planning some sort of game reveal as we speak, it should be a digital presentation, similar to what was planned last year. Although, given the tenuous state of things, a press release drop is also a possibility. My guess is that this will air from between the next few weeks and the end of March, and should go over at least a good bit of what I laid out today. We seem due for a reveal here pretty soon, so i'm of the belief that we may be mere days away from something substantial.
>"mere days away"
>it's almost May and there still haven't been any announcements yet

:story: :story: :story: :story: :story: :story:
Of course, I'll happily eat crow if proven wrong, but until Sega officially says something, press X with all your might, my friends.

tbf like i said i take it with a grain of salt, the actual olympics, happen like every 4 years but the real life olympics 2020 never actually happened because of COVID, their probably going to break the rule as soon as the pandemic is over, probably going to be a winter one this time.

SEGA (Specificly Aaron Webber) also publicly confirmed their willing to take their time after the backlash forces got, let alone how a lot of the fanbase started hating on the boost formula after forces.
(it's arround 17 mintues or so IIRC)
that also got covered by several gaming articles

there's also the fact that the Sonic fanbase is very hard to please, many people like the Boost games but like i said, many people also hate them, it's also that Forces tried to be everything every type of sonic fan liked at once (have the serious plot of the adventure/dark age games but also have the jokes from colors-onwards, force in classic sonic to try and replicate generations, etc.) but failed miserably due to incompetency, specialy when Mania came out the same year.

and again, it is true that there's already a bigillion classic fangames out there. it woud at this point be pointless to do so for a franchise that has been alive and well (if sonic was a dead IP that barely got any games anymore, then it woud be more petty) so they can focus on Modern Sonic, also considering that DBZ comparisson too.

and this guy properly predicted many nintendo games already, so he could be trustworthy although the fact that he's suddenly leaking SEGA this time, kinda makes that grain of salt bigger.

Sega immediately moving in the opposite direction of the most popular and liked version of Sonic in recent memory is definitely their MO, for that reason alone I could believe this Adventurefag wankfic.

let's also remember how a lot of the dedicated fanbase now are vocal adventurefags who grew up with those games and so don't have any attachment to classic sonic beyond collections (+ shoving him into a 3D game, Forces with way worse gameplay than it's standalone game, Mania caused a lot of the fanbase to get tired of it and some to start hating classic sonic), so of course their listening to the more dominant side of the fanbase now, just like how they listened to classic fans when making Mania (and Sonic 4)

I think Sega just decided to start using Sonic in games which were unrelated to the classic games as a "cash grab" hoping to use Sonic's popularity to boost sales - they probably saw how Nintendo started using Mario in lots of different game genres (e.x. party, sports, kart racing, fighting, RPGs, etc) - and thought the same thing would work with Sonic - the problem is that Mario is such a generic character that he's extremely versatile, while Sonic was always just about the speed and platforming, so shoehorning Sonic into dime-a-dozen "adventure" games with realistic-looking characters, weapons such as machine guns, and Legend of Zelda-like elements just doesn't work very well.

(This is probably why the only good Sonic games in recent years were the ones which stuck as close to the original platforming as possible). Not to mention how many of the newer games seemed very low-budget and unpolished - they probably just got lazy and knew the game would sell just because it had Sonic in it and didn't care.

i think it's more because they wanted sonic to look cool and follow trends, they had hub worlds because every platformer was doing it at the time (Mario 64, Banjo), mixed with RPG elements because the game was originally an RPG but they had to change it because they needed a 3D Sonic game fast after X-Treme's cancelation, mixed with Anime tropes (Confident hero with a great sense of justice, weak childhood friend, fangirl, tough guy, edgelord) because anime was cool then, and GTA, or God of War, or Tony Hawk esque gameplay gimmicks because that was the new edgy thing. they just had to make their franchise based arround being hip and cool... still hip and cool, plus they tried to be more cinematic to show how powerful the new console was, hence cutscenes with voice acting and scenarios such as sonic being chased by whales, going down buildings or fighting kaijus were added.

imo it worked for them when it was done right, SA1 still felt like a Sonic game, but the former had hub worlds that just felt like peach's castle but with more flavor, but you still had the speed design of the genesis games (most of the time, the only real slow ones were Amy, Gamma, and Big, and the former two still played like platformers) and even the callbacks to the genesis games, obnly that they added new ideas for 3D aswell as to move to the next generation and be more relevant like i said, im also the kind for the realistic setting, as im a sucker for realism mixed with fantasy, and humans living together with non-humans, plus some of the gimmicks still felt like it was a fast platformer but with combat or teamwork this time, or really insanely fast. if anything stuff like poor design and execution or having a buggy mess is what ruined many of the games more than any gimmick or change in style could.

A Synopsis for the 2nd movie has been leaked here (Archive)

“After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is ready for more freedom, and Tom and Maddie agree to leave him home while they go on vacation. But, no sooner are they gone, when Dr. Robotnik comes back, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.”

aw man I was hoping it was gonna be about Dr. Robotnik slowly realizing that Mobius is just a place in a video game and everyone around him are characters and he eventually overcomes his fear of the N word and sails out to sea and hits the bounding boxes of the game world at the end

Jim Carrey's serious side is criminally underrated

a couple of news surrounding Sonic, firstly it's being rumored that SEGA is planning to rerealese Sonic 1, 2 (again) and a few games that never saw rerealeases before in a collection (wich possibly means Sonic 3 & knuckles and Knuckles' Chaotix and maybe the game gear games

it'as the same guy who leaked the supposed info on the new sonic games. it could be fake so take it with a grain of salt.
other info is that a new image of the Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia (bassicly the Hyrule Historia for Sonic games) was revealed
https://i.redd.it/vs9yf8mxf2071.jpg
it seems the box features more obscure games from the modern era like Sonic Advance Trilogy, Riders, Sonic 4, Shadow the Hedgehog, Pinball Party, Rush & Rush Adventure, the 3DS version of Generations, aswell as some from Sonic 1, Sonic & Knuckles, Adventure, Lost World, Mania, Team Sonic Racing, and some of the mobile games. hell i think i even see Sonic 06.

I hope it's not just 2D games. It can't be too hard to throw in the Adventure games, Heroes and Shadow.

The eternal question: was Sonic ever a good game?

The platforming is mediocre. The speed is an illusion that stops every 20 feet. The enemies are janky as fuck. The controls are questionable. The soundtrack was good. And that's not even getting into the 3D games.

Was Sonic ever a good game?

Sonic bad please like.
sonic is bassicly speedrunning the game, it's about memorizing patterns, dodging obstacles and using the speed to skillfully explore levels with several branching paths, people who say that just suck at it, besides sonic's game design is waaay better than most of the NES library, with maybe Mario and Kirby being the only exceptions, and even then Mario 64 feels more Sonic-ish than Mario-ish with it's controls also using momentum to find several ways to reach an objective.

the 3D Games aren't that bad either.
