So at most we have four major characters introduced, with two barely at the end. This is not a problem in and of itself, but again the comic assumes you know these characters. If I gave my little cousin this comic, would he have reason to care about these guys?
Yeah, as a companion piece to the games, it fails at that, as it assumes you know these characters, with no explanation given.

(“Can Love Hammer It Out” as if there’s any romance in this comic)
Yep, nothing at all. Due to the comic mandates, relationships between characters range between non-existent to teasing, as the main cast can't have new relationships or interact with people further than what they do in games, and the OCs DO interact with each other... Unfortunately, it's usually between ugly lesbians, or an abusive older sister + younger brother stand-ins.

I think later, one issue features a city from Sonic Unleashed, but it’s dead and no humans are in sight. If you’ve played Unleashed you’d get the reference, but if you haven’t then all you see is sonic running through a weirdly dead city.
Since there can only be what's in games, the world effectively has no central government, or government of any kind, or any authority figure, nada. That's why the bad guys are pretty much plot-devices (even GUN is seemingly gone as they haven't reappeared so far and the comic won't bother to try anything with them)*. I also like how the no-name characters are always generic cowards, incompetents, or both at once.

*This also has the funny result of a bad guy brutalizing an OC, and then immediately jobbing against Sonic because the former lacked plot armor, while the latter has a "can't be defeated" clause for the comics.

Well, if everyone insists...

I quite like this summary and personal opinion approach, so keep it up. 👍

To compare, the Archie series introduces almost all its major characters and some of the locations of the world all within the 1st issue.

Another thing I quite like from the Archie days is how that comic was a lot more expressive in it's art style. This IDW issue really just goes through the motions and nothing really stands out.

Rejoice and regret, as something's actually happening:

There are many days where I keep asking myself "What the fuck is wrong with IDW Sonic". This day is no different.

It's been FOUR YEARS since Frontiers released. People have yelled at Potto day in and day out to stop using the creative dead end of Forces as the spine of the comic. But only NOW does it finally decide to start importing the one thing people actually liked from Frontiers?! After spending a lot of this comic's run trying to force a Crying Lesbian Pinocchio to be loved in her place?!

God I wish I had Archie back.

That's my point. Anything that was remotely interesting or complicated has either been resolved or silently forgotten about.
Not sure if it's their fault due to the insane mandate of the comics, which pretty much stop it from having any stakes, as the main cast are untouchable. Adding the GUN guys means the comic would have to immediately backtrack once/if they're reintroduced as to follow the new lore. That, or Flyn doesn't bother to risk anything. Same deal if a governor type is introduced.
To note, the inane, jarring zombie arc lasted for years, and that one was obviously going nowhere.

I'm surprised it took so long. What they have been doing since the introduction of Literal Sonic and Tails Walmart Copies (aka Surge and Kit)?
What will Sage do when Eggman can't do shit since there's no-one to talk to?

By the way, this one is good as a reminder of the Sonic fandom.
I'm surprised Kiwifarms wasn't mentioned.

Sage being around as a permanent character in the franchise is gonna be a huge fucking problem. Her existence in a plot is going to screw over anything robotnik tries to do because there’s no way in hell she’ll agree ‘yeah let’s go kill sonic! yeah let’s go destroy the planet!’ It wouldn’t be so bad if it was a orbot/starline situation where robotnik can just slap him around and be told to stfu, Frontiers makes it quite obvious that he sees her as his daughter, so any plot that involves him scheming is now totally fucked.

Alternatively, if all she’s gonna do is look sad and pensive in the bg as he pushes the big ‘genocide all life on earth’ button again, then congrats IDW you’ve created yet another crying girl character that does jack shit.

That one is a prequel of 10 years ago, and they haven't appeared ever since, probably because Sonic Forces implied they were destroyed.
Eggman corroborated this during one of the Twitter takeovers as well. Couple that with the fact that GUN still appears in flashbacks in modern works, but not in the present and I think it's safe to say they're dead as of Forces. [Which means Eggman finallly got his revenge for the ARK incident... completely offscreen. Yay.]

Eggman finallly got his revenge for the ARK incident
The sole thing Eggman has to get revenge for related to the ARK is his extended family caring more about Maria than himself, if we are to take the audiologs in Frontiers seriously. Other than impeding his own goals, he doesn't have much against GUN.

So they effectively written GUN off. I guess they don't mind having it as part of the lore, but I don't think they even want to do anything with them anymore so not to have haphazardly interject weird Human stuff and make the setting even more convoluted. Seems like lately SEGA's been reworking the world of Sonic without trying to do a soft reboot.

Why can't they just say that the alien niggers had decimated GUN to the point of irrelevance and call it a day?

GUN never dies. United Federation PQtriots rise up!

Issue 2

Art:

Art is good this issue. Action scenes are fine, but I really like the expressiveness of the characters. Again I don’t have a shred of talent when it comes to the visual arts so take this opinion with a grain of salt.

Summary:

The comic opens much like the first with Sonic dunking on badniks.

(Note the sheep for much later)

He has a surprise encounter with Amy, who tries to get him to rejoin the Resistance, who were the good guys in Sonic Forces. Sonic refuses because he can cover a lot of ground by himself and look for clues on who is behind the badnik attacks.

He also claims he likes working alone better, which is frankly ridiculous. There are countless instances of Sonic working with others in the games, cartoons, and comics-including this one! Sonic being a loner is never brought up again, so this is completely out of character. To be generous, maybe Flynn had a different idea of how the story was going to go, but who can say.

Also one of Sonic’s arguments is that it seems that someone is timing the attacks for when he and his friends are nearby. At least that’s what I think he’s saying? The opening makes it look like Sonic was heading to the town because of the badnik attack. I guess you could say he and Amy were baited here? But why? Were a couple of badnik jobbers supposed to take care of them?

Or maybe the author just needed an excuse to get these two characters for the issue. Hmmmmm…

I think we could have just one big issue where the comic introduces all the returning characters together in one big issue. It’s not like anything big has happened in this issue or the previous.

Anyhow, Amy coordinates the town’s defenses as Sonic commits robot genocide. Then the hedgehogs mop up the rest and call it a day. The comic ends with Sonic running off again and the two skunk characters and Knuckles getting teased.

This issue actually did surprise me with how much they tease a romance between Sonic and Amy. With how dry the rest of the comic is, this is issue practically an Ao3 fanfiction smut.

Final Note:

This one was more interesting than issue 1, by virtue of the character interactions. Issue 3 is another character introduction chapter. Also in the letters of this issue, there’s the boyfriend of the probable transvestite Amy (dubbed Rena Rose) from issue 1. There’s a group photo but no indication which one’s the boyfriend.

Maybe the "boyfriend" and the Amy are the same person.
