IMO It was a dumb decision to acknowledge and integrate shittier plots of past's games, but Ian has a boner for attempting to tie everything together not matter nonsense the outcome is.

The core issue with Tails's fallback into whining being pussy is not because He was shown like that; but the ''Why" He was shown like that (terrible writing where the supporting cast serves not other purpose but to gratify the hero).
Ian goes his way and make him say "Th3n ImA WiDly InC0nSisTent", to self insert on Tails and do that commentary with the subtetly of a fucking sledgehammer.
Beats me to understand Why He had to address that instead of burying alongside 2006 as they already did..

Sonic Frontiers in a nutshell:

It looks like SEGA played Breath of the Wild and just slapped Sonic on it. World looks barren with random rails all over the place.

I know that this is just a joke, but the game is not design like BotW at all, mostly because the worlds are designed for their respective character controllers and the mindset each gives to the player.
After playing it for a while I think I can see how it was designed, the rails have a patern and a direction to them, usually to make the player go to one of the cyberpace levels, to a chaos emerald or to one of the islands mysteries, while also getting the memories along the way.
Its not perfext but I enjoy it

Picked up Frontiers, thought I could have a few fun evenings laughing at it. On the second island now. Truth is it's just fucking boring. The mechanics of movement are a decent platform from which you could build a good game, but the whole experience is just so mediocre. It's not even funnybad; there's just enough dry competence there that it verges into ultraforgettable. The music is completely generic, the dialogue is stilted, the story is poorly-contextualised/terribly-paced, the level design is pedestrian, even the UI/menus lack an identity. I'm not reading anything about the reception of this game until I finish it, but as it stands it's another step in the series' journey to drop its longstanding redeeming qualities in exchange for a mediocre bit of trendchasing.
The game layout is kind of like if Ubisoft tried to make Mario 64

I already thought a 7 was ridiculous, but a 9? What’s so good about this game that it makes everyone sing high praise?
It's fun. Open world goyslop goes down easier when you can traverse the landscape at Mach 4.
everyone is willing to ignore constant pop-in, the same shitty gameplay since Colors, the same recycled levels since Generations, the same shitty combat from Unleashed, and the bleak, gray overworld?
The pop-in is shitty, it needs to be updated to preload all that shit on actual hardware. Feels like a concession made for the switch that they were too lazy to fix for everything else. The gameplay is very different, it may be boostshit but Sonic feels tight and fun to control, with much of the open world functioning like a good 3D sonic level might. I never played Unleashed but the combat, especially against bigger minibosses, is more fun than fighting has ever been in a Sonic game. Flashy, visceral, decent enemy variety, and they all fight differently.

Sure it isn't a 9/10 but it is a pretty decent game. As usual critics were too harsh on it and audiences are too forgiving.
I do agree that this is a good direction for the series going forward, though. Now we've just gotta see if Sega and Sonic Team will keep up the momentum (lol).
If the sequel can expand the idea out into more than fields and ruins by putting some actual levels or something into the game as natural geometry it will be a great sequel.

I'll post this here as well because why not
I did really like Frontiers tbh, it is a much better game than everything after generations, and it is also better than colors which I didnt really like tbh.

Having now finished the game and found all the little character interactions scattered around the map, it does get pretty lulzy how many of them are little more than an excuse for Ian to show off how much Sonic lore he knows. Like Sonic will walk up to Knuckles and be like "this reminds me of the time Tikal showed us how the Echidna tribe was annihilated in Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast, 1999)" and that's it, it's just a reference. Easily half of the cutscenes are just the characters rattling off references like "remember when Chaos Station Square Dark Gaia Omega Infinite Super Knuckles? Wow" One critic review I read said that these moments reminded him of characters in Family Guy setting up cutaway gags and I can't disagree.

And yes, Tails' whole character arc in this game is blatantly just Ian airing his criticisms of how the previous writers handled him, and while he has a point about Tails being mostly relegated to the damsel in distress role it's severely undermined by the fact that this game does the exact same thing.

I find it hilarious that Sonic refuses to put in a chao garden something the fans will eat up but brings back fucking fishing.

Is it really this buggy or is it Dunkey being Dunkey again
The game has its problems, but this is just dunkey being dunkey, also in terms of collision, as someone that has been working on games as a hobby I can tell you that the faster a character is the harder it is to make every collision work correctly, so I find the criticism of some weird places to be just kind of petty, especially if you go out of your way to find them
