I played this when it came out on August 2nd and had a blast, probably some of the most fun I've had with a sonic game in a while. The one original level in the middle of the campaign doesn't overstay it's welcome, and I'm in awe of how much Robotnik Winter zone was improved.
Most of the soundtrack is good too (Sunset Park act 3 (the track in the launch trailer) notwithstanding, sounds too gba-ish at parts for my tastes)

The launch trailer spoils 2 unlockables Knuckles and Fang that I didn't know about going in because it actually released a day after launch, which is a bit of shame since I would say going in blind to those unlockables enhanced the experience for me.
I went through it yesterday and it's pretty damn good, loved Triple Trouble and I'm glad they didn't do a bad job translating it to an authentic genesis style but still added some extra stuff (like a tournament mode with a story)

I was following it on and off and man is it humorously convenience the release date of this project, it was released after Sonic Origins which 1. has a chronological retelling of the Sonic story which it picks up after, 2. is something for the new fans and 3. is also a remake as well (I know Origins is a remaster but still.)

Only on the second zone, think it's pretty great so far but the special stages can be pretty troubling, like man does difficulty rise on the third Special stage. Still think they are cool and and are the best part so far along with the beginning, also bringing back the Homing Attack Shield is always a based move.

Also it's mini comic is a neat little addition.

I assume you mean Insta-shield. I will always prefer it over drop dash. I don’t understand why drop dash is showing up in pretty much every fan game when I could never find a use for it. Insta-shield isn’t entirely useful either (hell, you only need to use it twice in one game), I still prefer it because it makes me feel like I’m jumping with a little more confidence.

Speedrunners and to appease to the "gotta go fast" croud. Personally I never used it in Mania. I'm the kind of person that loves to explore sonic levels rather than just whiz through them, and the stages in Mania had A LOT of places to explore.

I don't even know what the drop dash refers to, what is it and how do you perform it?

The homing shield was a shield type introduced in Sonic 3D Blast that allows you to home in on enemies at the top of a button. It was pretty useful in that game as you had to defeat all the enemies in a level in order to complete it.
It’s a move you can do in Sonic Mania. No real point to it that I can see.

I'm pretty sure the point is being able to maintain speed when you land from a fall, but I don't care for it much either. My favorite of Sonic's bonus moves was always the Super Peel Out.

The Drop Dash's main use is to help you quickly build speed whenever you're landing from a fall or if you just want get pass the level quicker.

You get more use out of it as a speedrunner as it's an on-the-fly spin dash and helps save time that you could have wasted by stopping to do a regular spin dash.

That seems like a great move to me, but I'm not sure about the input method, the way he explained it sounds a tad finicky. Whenever I land I try to go into a ball anyway since it's the safest option moving forward, so I'll have to try that out.

Oh yeah, the golden shield! I completely forgot about that because it’s been a while since I played 3D Blast.

So it’s something that’s more useful to speedrunners, but not me. Got it.

Edit: probably gonna sperg about Mania, but I’d have to find a more appropriate time

That, plus even if you think you're spot on, you can sometimes just miss the enemy when trying to jump on them due to the isometric view. The gold shield, while being a god-send, was also rare as it didn't appear as often as the blue shield, and the red shield was only in the fire level.

Also you could destroy certain terrain like ice ponds to get to secret/alternate areas (or wind up back in the beginning of the stage)

It even made you land on the spot when you press jump with no enemy around, so that was pretty nice for certain situations

Introduced in Mania, I think it was that if you hold the jump button while in midair it charges up a spindash and immediately launches it the instant you touch down on the ground again
Side note: it was also found in the Sonic 3 Beta that came out a couple of years ago, with the early Knuckles graphics and the PC version music, so they had the idea in mind back in 93

I've been playing Sonic 06 on xenia with some fan fixes for the physics and stuff, and I have to say that I've been finding the experience for the most part very fun, the level design of the game is actually very good

Edit: Also the loading times are much much faster, they are still there but pretty much become a non issue
