ChaosX aka the guy who made Project 06 made a mockup fan version of Sonic Frontiers before the IGN gameplay showcases came out.

Here's some old gameplay of it, 1st newer and 2nd older.



Here's a updated screenshot of the game, it's not playable right and still very wip right now as of my knowing.

It seemed to also be made around the Sonic Forces engine or at least it was frame work for it, don't know what he's going to do when it comes to enemies or if there will even be any.

He's still working on and added a playable SA1 (Dreamcast and DX) Sonic as well, it's a pretty neat project but I'm now wondering though if he'll do anything more with this project especially cuz of the current situation with Frontiers.

The first immediate thought upon seeing these demos is when their isn't a bunch of out of place automated segment level design crap like floating grind rails, boost pads, springs, random floating platforms, etc the generic assets don't look that bad to just run through. It isn't amazing, but it looks better at a glance despite these assets obviously being of a lower quality.

It is like all the random automated crap completely saps any feeling of wonder or interest that could exist in this lush grass mountainous field and is replaced with the thought of "This is literally just a video game isn't it?"

I'm honestly surprised Dimps has been thrown aside for introducing all of that shit.

That's one thing I noticed looking back at the announcement trailer and promo screenshots. It's just clean landscape shots, no random stage objects. It actually looks like an open world instead of a giant test room. Feels like Sonic Team thought people were going to get bored of running around, and they thought they best way to fix that was to litter the place with floating platforms and rails.

This isn’t a new thing as CrippleThreat pointed out and because of that there has been a lot of content that satirizes it.

A example of one that comes to mind at least for me is Sonic Adventure Genisys’ titular “Project Genisys” level which is satirizing what a hypothetical SA remake would be like.

Included the full level because it’s the second best part of the mod. (The first being the level after)

I’ve lost all hope for Sega. They’re only going to keep making the same mistakes they have been for about a decade now. It’s time to move on.
 
I’m also underwhelmed by the footage they’ve shown, though I can see how the mechanics and concepts have promise. I wonder if perhaps they are taking too much inspiration from how Nintendo presented Breath of the Wild at E3 2016, which was pretty low key but a lot of people loved. I think the novelty of that kind of presentation is hard to emulate, especially 6 years later and for a franchise that is notorious for just throwing what they can at the wall.

If I remember correctly, the demo for the 360 was a "fixed" version that got rid of some of the bugs the PS3 version had, but for whatever reason Sega just decided not to apply those fixes in their main games.

The supposed story for why 06's demo is better then the actual game was that the demo used a less stable build overall that still played better. The full game was supposedly more stable (to I guess crashes or some other kind of fuckery) at the cost of the obvious gameplay flaws the 360 demo with Kingdom Valley didn't have if you play the full version of Kingdom Valley.

The PS3 version is actually even worse then the 360 version overall, likely because the PS3 was to my recollection notoriously hard to develop for so most multiplatform releases ran better on the 360.
 
After catching up on the developments on Frontiers, I think that the Sonic Cycle will strike again. The "open world"-genre has been oversaturated for quite a while and the newer Sonic games already have a reputation of "underwhelming" to "really bad", Mania excluded.
Judging from the gameplay trailer of Frontiers, the world is empty and lifeless with some puzzles and platforming sections tacked on to it. Also the soundtrack mixed in with the premise is giving me "bargain bin-BotW" vibes. So here comes my assumption of how this will play out: An attempt of SEGA/Sonic Team tryharding BotW with another new character that is totally not shoehorned in, a lackluster story and potentially an underwhelming or even boring game loop. Also no Eggman.

If it's coming out on December of this year like planned, it's going to fall flat on its face, mark my words. If it's not, you can make fun of me for being a cynical asshole.

Open world isn't a genre it's a design philosophy.

Sonic frontiers would be an Open World Platformer and the platformer genre in general is not saturated at all.

Sonic was first concepted with a human girlfriend in mind, and he's routinely shown more interest in people not of his kind. He fucking cat call whistled at Lumina in Sonic Shuffle. Besides, it makes those shippingfags seethe and I'm all for that.

Anyway, I'm gonna remain cautiously optimistic for Frontiers. Maybe because I'm not that smart, but I don't get what people say when they say it has no artistic direction or it looks lifeless. BOTW looks way more lifeless but that's praised for some reason. As for "Sonic doesn't work in realistic environments" is a misnomer at best and being disingenuous at worst. SA 1 and 2, Unleashed, and even 06 looked fine in that regard. You can say a lot of things about 06 but it usually wasn't about art direction. You can maybe argue about whatever you consist as automation, but it still requires input, and this is the first time ive seen anyone complain about the fucking rails or dash panels when it's been a staple ever since SA1.

And even then, there's a *ton* of shit we haven't seen yet. What's the gameplay loop? Story? Music? This skill tree? The other islands that were talked about? The "Cyberspace" stages that were supposedly really fuckin' baller? Half the problem is how cut up these previews are, and how poorly they're played. The dude playing these needs to be canned because he's not doing it any favors. I'm not gonna dickride it either and say it looks good, because those animations really do need work, and I hope there are more complicated puzzles down the line, but just the fact that Pontac and Graff don't have their grubby mitts on it anymore is already a step in the right direction.

Was making a joke about dangerhairs and already knew about the fact you've posted, it was pretty much the same with Mario/"Paulina", but that one was way more reasonable.

I'll hold SA and SA2(B) dear to my heart and still play those games somewhat regularly, but they still had flaws. The Werehog stages turned me off from Unleashed and I played the Generations mods instead. '06 is another story. I thought the game was fine, but it turned out to be a bug-infested pile of shit. I still got through the final boss. The story was ok, but tried too hard to be a SA3. But the soundtrack was still really good.
Matter of fact: '06 was the first game I actually abused bugs (notably the box glitch) for my entertainment.

Ah, my bad. Went right over my head.

Also, I don't see this being talked about much at all, but a lot of the people calling this second 06 really need to remember something important. Frontiers was supposed to release last year to coincide with Sonic's 30th anniversary. Sega willingly let an anniversary release pass them by so Sonic Team could polish it more. While we see gameplay now, its worth saying that the game is apparently able to be finished. I say this because a lot of the naysayers are currently bemoaning about how it's not gonna get better and 6 more months isn't going to help them at all.

Which, I dunno man. It helps to be cautious, especially because this is Sonic we're talking about, but they've sunk actual time and effort into this one this time. (if their financial QnA with investors is any indication, they are very aware of what their reputation looks like). This is why I'm willing to see it through to the end. Foolishly optimistic? Maybe, but I've always been able to find good things in even bad titles, so I guess I'm the odd man out.
