I have a slight bias towards the Japanese one, due to the aforementioned incongruity.
Right. The original songs are subtle variations on past/present/future. Whereas the Past has an entirely different tune in the US version.

I'd be partial to the EU/JAP version if it didn't shake my tooth fillings out. Megaman's a yoga teacher next to Sonic CD.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles > Sonic the Hedgehog 2 > The Rest.

While S3&K is, to me, the best of the 2D games, I have more nostalgia for Sonic 1. It was my first Genesis game, so it receives the honor of introducing me to the console, and thus holds a unique position. That said, I enjoy playing Sonic 2 more than Sonic 1, which is why it follows S3&K on my personal list. S3&K's soundtrack, especially the Michael Jackson heavy ones, are the best of the 2D Sonic era.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is fun, more so with a second player. Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast have, I think, decent soundtracks, but fail to keep me invested long term. The same with the SEGA Game Gear titles; decent music, underwhelming captivation.

Knuckles' Chaotix has a stellar soundtrack. Gameplay can be janky, but it is passable. Charmy makes level progression stupidly easy, if you want to sample the levels and rush the game.

Sonic CD. "Sonic Boom" and "Toot Toot Sonic Warrior" are both great introduction songs, and both soundtracks, English and Japanese, have their gems. On paper, the game looks interesting, but much of the levels, to me, are a clusterfuck of obstacles in design. That said, the race with Metal Sonic on Stardust Speedway is a Top 10 stage for me.

I have a soft spot for Sonic 1, only because it's the first one I played as a kid. It's a comfort blanket of familiar sights and sounds.

I read recently that Sonic 1's environments were inspired by pop art of the time. Sonic CD tried to capture that look, but fell short. (Too much aggravating bullshit, like the springboard maze in SS or the electric currents in WW.)

It's the damndest thing. Each time I play Sonic CD, I hate it a little more.

This is basically Sonic 1: Hard Type. With the running 'gag' of placing springs/spikes in the final stretch before the goal. Flying enemies that clip through walls. Precision platforming with floaty controls. I tried to use save states to get all the time stones, and I still ate shit. Ironically, Sonic is too slow in these sections, and the UFOs have unclear hitboxes. There is no way to beat those final two sections without brute force and luck.

The zones lack identity. They're all remixes of Sonic 1 levels. Stardust Speedway is the iconic one. But it's the most frustrating level by far. The race with Metal Sonic is cheap as all hell. You find yourself jumping every few feet to avoid oncoming obstacles. This is not a speed or platforming contest.

The best thing I can say about it? Getting all the time stones will cause all enemies (well, most of them.... it's kind of unclear) to turn into flowers as soon as they spawn. But it's not worth the hassle. And you see why future games had multiple entrances to the special stage.
lol sonic cd is easy as shit iirc. i bet you're one of the fags who claim sonic 1's special stage is entirely luck based

I don’t see it mentioned here, but apparently the reason we have not seen a Sonic Mania follow up is because of disagreements between Sega and Evening Star Studio (founded by members of the Sonic Mania development team). If that is the case, that is the most Sega thing I’ve seen in years.

Got any sources for that?

The past is actually where both soundtracks are the same.

Their source is Zippo, so take that for what it is, but it’s not that encouraging that Sega has essentially shown fuck all for the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
You had a gravy train in the making, and blow it all way. Bravo Sega!

Hot take: There's nobody left at Sega who knows how to make Sonic work in 2D.

Sega came to believe that there was more money in competing with Mario, only to abruptly realize they were holding a Dead Man's Hand. They also took fans for granted. They tended to use Sonic Team as a kind of jobs program for novices to gain experience from. That's bad.

Welcome to the modern gaming industry. Probably best that Mania was the last hurrah for them as Sega would've surely mucked it up if Sonic's history is anything to go by.

Zippo doesn't know shit and made that clear since they revealed Origins etc. It's probably just SEGA being cheap and not giving Sonic Team the budget to make a 2D game themselves (or commission someone else to do it for them).

Sonic Colors Ultimate

Yeah, this game is a load of shit. From the constant sound bugs to the animation glitches. I haven't really suffered any major issues as I 100%'d the game, collecting every red-ring and each chaos emerald, but then I make my way to the final boss, defeat it and beat the game. The ending credits are just as buggy as the base game, but still mildly enjoyable. Halfway through, the game shuts off and I'm booted back to the xbone home screen (don't worry, I'll delete my account and kill myself later for owning an xbone). Finding it kinda funny that the game crashed during the credits, I boot it back up and lo and behold, the final boss progress and final stage are completely unsaved and need to be redone. No thanks, I beat the game, fuck you. This will most likely be the last Sonic game I ever play.

In the best timeline where Chriscest didn't happen we'd be getting to hear from him about it.

Dammit, fungus girl.

I saw some sonic JAKKS figures at 5 below a few days ago. I bring this up because if you know about these things you know the "accessory" shit they come with (a carry-over from their mario/world of nintendo figures) is usally completely random bullshit. However, these 5 dollar 2 inch ones clearly had thought put into them, at least 2 of them. Knuckles had a green chaos emerald, which at the 2 inch scale just looks like the master emerald when he yoinks it out of his pocket in sa2 minus the shape being wrong.
Tails had a purple chaos emerald, which is a blatant nod to this, albeit completely out of scale lmao.
According to the labels these rereleases are part of th 30th anniversarry line, so make of that what you will.

Also if that shit about Sonic mania 2 getting cancelled is legit, that fucking sucks for real.
