I made the mistake of browsing /co/ for a MEGA of the newest Smiling Friends episode and came across a storytime of this new comic issue:

There's a new character named Soleil (no pronouns) an adorkable sugar glider who has a split personality named Lunar (no pronouns) who's this super-cool thief who manages to outsmart Sonic, Tails and Shadow and steal a lot of shit from a lot of places.
1763596490635.png 1763596670389.png
Soleil fucks up his family circus's act starts to watch videos of Sonic on the internet via his smartphone and gets inspired to do his own stunts which leads him to forming his split personality (aka, his neurodivergence):
1763596244406.png 1763596145368.png
Tails calls him out on it (lol):
1763596340274.png
Which prompts him to break down crying:
1763596398658.png
But Sonic is there to validate his delusions. I wonder where this is going!

Then comes the reveal, the REAL villains of the issue are Soleil's oppressive parents for trying to keep him down! (Not the thieving split personality, no!)
1763594900104.png 1763595005894.png
Soleil's parents blame Sonic for "corrupting" their innocent young child with his bold new ideas that he saw on the internet!
(HMMM I WONDER WHAT THIS COULD BE HINTING TOWARDS)
1763595052967.png 1763595508104.png 1763596071528.png
They even heckin SMASH his phone (his only connection to NEW IDEAS!!) because they're so fucking evil.
1763595103251.png
This shit is written like an episode of Steven Universe, it's a thinly veiled allegory for "coming out" to your mean evil abusive repressive parents, while doing the whole Tumblr thing of having a heckin cool fictional character back you up.

First, Sonic gives a Steven Universe speech to "Lunar", even doing the cringe milennial Marvel thing of reaffirming a genderspecial's identity to help "normalize" it:
1763597163578.png 1763598411729.png

1763597301285.png
Lunar figures out how to do Sonic's spin move (because he's JUST that EPIC), and Sonic reaffirms his beliefs one last time:
1763597268284.png
Then Lunar gives a Steven Universe speech to his parents.
1763593444420.png
The whole drama is resolved in literally ONE page, where the oppressive strict parents are IMMEDIATELY won over by the nonbinary/"no pronouns" OC self-insert and show their affection in a cartoonishly gratuitous way.
1763593199078.png
They fold the MINUTE their child stands up to them, no pushback, their supposedly strict, inflexible beliefs suddenly become flexible.

Mid-way through the comic, Sonic and Tails split off to fight Soleil's family. Tails gets no focus, and somehow he manages to make friends with all of Soleil's family offscreen.
1763595577755.png
Very climactic!
The comic does end with based Shadow knocking the Chaos Emerald off of the little bastard, ending the stupid fucking OC wankfest:
1763595621963.png
Rouge swoops in, steals it, Eggman shows up, troonclown gets doted on one final time
1763595603202.png
Even Sonic remarks on how fucking anticlimactic this issue is.
1763598595046.png
This issue was written by Evan Stanley, but the art was mainly done by Gigi Dutreix, the woman-turned-"I'M NONBINARY I'M NONBINARY" schizo who got into a LOT of controversy earlier this year after drawing Sonic and Shadow (children's video game characters) with mastectomy cuts, implying that they're FtM transsexuals and advertising sex change surgery.
1763593756002.png 1763594010110.png 1763594051243.png
She also does this with other characters, it's practically a fetish.
1763593931001.png
This issue seems to follow in the vein of Genderqueer, the book that basically became this woman's bible after her husband died, sending her down the path of using gender non-conformity as a replacement for personality. Reading that book of "forbidden knowledge" transformed her brain, much like how Soleil watching Sonic transformed his brain.
1763598706551.png
She's made it her life's mission to evangelize the gospel of Gender Queer to as many kids as possible, including putting it in her Creator Biography in one of the other comics.
1763598748797.png
Gender Queer is a book featuring uncensored gay sex and masturbation! Perfect for the target audience of Japanese Childrens' platformer!
1763598832047.png 1763598931702.png
In comics, there's a lot of overlap between writer and artist, so I have no doubt that Gigi had a hand in this character's creation and characterization.

The comics' staff are REALLY adamant that EVERYBODY know that Soleil/Lunar have NO PRONOUNS:
1763599699383.png 1763599813893.png 1763599826519.png 1763599847272.png 1763599862402.png 1763599878960.png
Gigi gets actively upset when people use they/them for Soleil.
1763599764561.png
1763599803304.png
These fuckers probably wanted to include a fully non-binary they/them character into the comic, but had the idea rejected by SEGA so they stuck with the most clunky and obnoxious workaround to have their cake and eat it too.

But even then, trying to pull this bullshit still leads to them fucking up their own game and logically using pronouns to make the dialogue actually work.
1763599274858.png
Look at this fucking delusional tweet:
1763599909276.png
It's so fucking awkward sounding. It's like how cavemen talk in TV shows and movies: "Me am Grug".
It also sounds rude as well, like you're constantly referring to someone in the third person, as if they aren't in the room. "That redhead", "oddball", "that weirdo". Even in the more positive examples Gigi uses, it's still weirdly impersonal, it only works when one character is referring to the character without pronouns to another character.
1763600048697.png
"[name] is getting away"
"That thief is getting away"

One of the biggest problems of this Sonic comic's reboot seems to be that the writers are more terminally online, and their writing is actively influenced by the opinions of Twitter. I'm not an avid reader of these comics, but I do know that Tangle and Whisper were introduced separately, to fill separate roles in the rebooted universe.
1763600200066.png
However, mentally ill furfags on Twitter started shipping them together, so that means that it's time to force them together, first as best friends, but now bordering as love interests because Twitter demands it.
1763600163211.png
The explanation as to why the writers haven't made them an official couple yet is supposedly because they weren't originally introduced as love interests, but really I'm pretty sure Sega wouldn't want to deal with the controversy.

It's a shame how the cool ideas from this comic got squandered in place of identity-affirmation bullshit.
1763600565141.png 1763600640854.png
I read the previous comic for context, and it seemed to be setting up some kind of whodunnit style mystery where the other jesters were in on the Emerald heist. It would've been cool to see Sonic and his pals take on some kind of jester crime syndicate, Court of Owls style, but no, instead, we got Steven Universe family drama hour, where at every turn, the jesters are shown to be a nonthreatening joke.

Rereading the IDW comic has been eye-opening; it's astounding how forgettable most of it is. The comic with Lunar the animal came out a month ago and I already forgot him and so will the writers in a three months. This plot thread was resolved in TWO issues and Lunar will now make only sporadic appearances once this arc is over. We know everything about the character, and he's boring! His schtick as a master thief is used by two other characters, including one introduced in a special published RIGHT AFTER this one, and one in the SAME ISSUE he first appears! All the intrigue was blown in 15 pages!

Now take Archie for example. Eggman's spiral (complete) insanity is foreshadowed about 6 issues before it was payed off. He then stays insane for about 12 issues while the Iron Queen runs the show (roughly an year of publication!) which serves as the long term payoff. Then there's the fact this episode is referenced after Eggman regains his sanity, and it also permanently damages his relationship with Snively.

Compare with IDW. Surge and Kit are vaguely foreshadowed several issues before they first appear. They then are present for all about 4 issues when they are immediately taken care of by Sonic, while Starline is killed and there are no long term repercussions. Starline's master plan has about 5 issues of payoff.

To be fair, that's about an year of publication for IDW.

Wow what a waste of a few months. They hype tf up a new villain - something the comic desperately needs - and in the space of two comics they ensure that they are as gay of a concept as possible and that they will never appear again outside of some cameos.

So as of right now we have robotnik, zavok (lol), metal sonic (robotnik), sage (robotnik), and also maybe zombie starline if the implications are correct.

The sonic mandate is a hell of a drug.

Wow, I can't believe the writer used the "My character (Sonic, that isn't actually yours BTW) would totally support my politics!" meme unironically.

There's a new character named Soleil (no pronouns) an adorkable sugar glider who has a split personality named Lunar (no pronouns) who's this super-cool thief who manages to outsmart Sonic, Tails and Shadow and steal a lot of shit from a lot of places.
Basically a Marvel-tier character. Also, a guy because girls usually don't go tranny.

Soleil fucks up his family circus's act starts to watch videos of Sonic on the internet via his smartphone and gets inspired to do his own stunts which leads him to forming his split personality (aka, his neurodivergence):
I kinda wonder if the whole plot could be considered an accidental jab against Dick Grayson.

Then comes the reveal, the REAL villains of the issue are Soleil's oppressive parents for trying to keep him down! (Not the thieving split personality, no!)
Reminds me of Small Saga, which had an inane similar premise, and in the end in turns out the parents were completely right.

Soleil's parents blame Sonic for "corrupting" their innocent young child with his bold new ideas that he saw on the internet!
(HMMM I WONDER WHAT THIS COULD BE HINTING TOWARDS)
No wonder IDW's Transformers died. Sonic IDW will follow sooner than later.

They even heckin SMASH his phone (his only connection to NEW IDEAS!!) because they're so fucking evil.
This sounds like the writer was making fun of someone, it sounds too specific.

This shit is written like an episode of Steven Universe, it's a thinly veiled allegory for "coming out" to your mean evil abusive repressive parents, while doing the whole Tumblr thing of having a heckin cool fictional character back you up.

Yeah, what's this for? No children will want to read this, and any parent who knows about trannyism will instantly burn this book.

The whole drama is resolved in literally ONE page, where the oppressive strict parents are IMMEDIATELY won over by the nonbinary/"no pronouns" OC self-insert and show their affection in a cartoonishly gratuitous way.
I like how the parents literally change opinion mid-sentence. Can't have conflict with SJW, it's illegal!

Rouge swoops in, steals it, Eggman shows up, troonclown gets doted on one final time
Shadow gets a win for one, at least. Oddly enough the IDW Shadow has been mostly a failure, jobbing all the time, such as that time he decided to charge a bunch of zombies who can infect by contact alone, and he's corrupted as he lies here screaming like a little girl.
You also forgot to show Robotnik's new master plan foreshadowed for several issues: A fucking robot clown. Woo!

Sounds like SEGA didn't check out this thing's bio. Archie Sonic got into a lot of shit for way less. Also, we went from Archie teaching about abuse, to "trannysm works!"
Note that coming out as a genderspecial is WORSE than being homo, as it's an ensured path towards your self-destruction, as you're rejecting yourself in a literal way, but I digress.

These fuckers probably wanted to include a fully non-binary they/them character into the comic, but had the idea rejected by SEGA so they stuck with the most clunky and obnoxious workaround to have their cake and eat it too.
It's clearly a they thing, but someone at SEGA had an ounce of common sense. Not enough, though.
"That thief is getting away"
It's misspelled in the Twitter, to boot.

Are you sure? I'm certain it's the writers doing the corrupting by themselves.

However, mentally ill furfags on Twitter started shipping them together, so that means that it's time to force them together, first as best friends, but now bordering as love interests because Twitter demands it.
They have been introduced as a gay couple outright in the Sonic racing game, so they're no longer separate characters.
The explanation as to why the writers haven't made them an official couple yet is supposedly because they weren't originally introduced as love interests, but really I'm pretty sure Sega wouldn't want to deal with the controversy.
Not sure. See above.
Rereading the IDW comic has been eye-opening; it's astounding how forgettable most of it is.
They have nothing to work with. Ian is waiting for GUN to show up already as otherwise not much can be done.
Even Archie began to decay in the end. Before the retcon wave, the Freedom Fighters were acting in an increasingly retarded way to foster drama, like that time they rejected a friendly AI that helped them for 5 years because of the fear she could go crazy and kill everyone (which results in the AI being immediately missed since no-one could replace her), or that time Naugus got the position of king because he walked in and asked nicely, and the previous king agreed to name him a successor, even if it was under duress. Then again, they had a council governed by those who demanded a revolution and the king himself, so they were setting themselves for failure.
Either way, it made me realize Eggman had a point about these critters being too stupid to live. Almost forgot the times the FF keep shitting on Sonic despite being their best fighter and unquestionably loyal.

These two had an use and it's done, so they're stuck. Ian doesn't want them to become Sonic friends as they would fade in the background, but they can't be villains since Sonic has diamond-tough plot armor.
Oh, and the IDW art looks terrible at times.
sage (robotnik),
Not a villain since she's colored blue and was friendly of Sonic, so she's at worst a friendly rival.

The zombie arc was a mistake, it lasted for too long and went too far, too soon, and in the end it only delayed the inevitable: The IDW Comic is pointless.

reading idw should be a once in a lifetime thing. it has everything bad in it. as someone who read archie from issue #0 all the way to the reboot's cancellation, i will tell you why it's super bad.

1- inconsistent character rewrites:
ian flynn will play the games once and will pull off any bullshit that makes sense only for him, but the outcome is always shit and characters always turn out to be a parody of themselves. Neo Metal Sonic aka "im gonna make the world my bitch" guy is rewritten into "my dad rewrote me to be not myself"
image.png
and sometimes robot's own "will" is too strong it can rebel against someone's mind control. so gemerl is stronger than neo metal???
image5.png

2- "only i can defeat eggman/sonic" cliche
here eggman slams Starline and yells him that he could've nuked sonic anytime, but he has to do it properly. do it not properly and eggman gets very angry. so it's not about eggman getting his win no more, but just messing with sonic without killing him.
Sonic-The-Hedgehog-014-020.jpg

3- characters rewritten to be fucking retards
here we can see a panel of charmy checking up on some metal infected citizen who has already turned. vector and espio tells him repeatedly to not go after this infected girl, but he won't listen because he's a 7yo so we MUST see a 7yo get eaten alive by a zombie horde, which should be very crucial to infect other side characters in the future. why? because it's a low effort cheap shot to get reactions out of people with shock factors, because ian flynn loves this "rollercoasters should go down to go back up later, guys"
Sonic-The-Hedgehog-017-021.jpg
shadow has been established to be the ultimate lifeform who is immune to any illnesses, so when sonic tells him to RUN (which is the only way to postpone the infection so you're fucked if your name is not Sonic) but shadow replies with "i don't run" so he's turned at the end. pure retardation plus inconsistent character rewriting.
Sonic-The-Hedgehog-019-023.jpg

eggman revealing that he has no backup plan for the infection and is doing it for the "megalolz" because IDW is written by Ian "Watkins" Flynn. (the panel is edited to be unfunny but he says pretty much the same thing in the original)
image2.png

4- crying dykes

ian flynn is obsessed with lesbian shoehorning since post-sgw archie with Sally and Nicole. now that he has full control over idw, he has introduced these characters called tangle the lemur and whisper the wolf individually btw, but since they were so fucking boring he had to add the yuri factor to make them stand out. they cry all the fucking time and it's so dogshit to see it.
image3.png

5- sonic refuses to punish his enemies/tries to talk it over constantly
since IDW villains can't do jack shit and is killed off or dumbed down in 1 or 2 issues at best, sonic insists on not killing them and always gives them a second chance. he has done this with neo metal who regressed back into metal sonic, who escaped btw and they didn't go after him, and this lets mr. tinker (a.k.a eggman with amnesia who is a good guy) gets his evil memories back because sonic let metal go.
image7.png
here after all of the losses by the metal virus, sonic STILL yells at metal sonic like an abused ex-wife.

image4.png

6- OBNOXIOUS references
i do not need to explain to you that ian flynn is notorious with his game references. but when the lore is so bad and you see a Sonic Forces reference where tails kneels down crying for sonic's help, it gets unbearably bad. you'll see it in every issue guaranteed, but i'll post only one that i find the worst.
image6.png

7- blatant traced art/rotoscoping
while first issues of IDW wasn't too obvious with it, however you'll come across a type of artstyle where it looks like a straight up Blender render. this is not "consistency", this is just trying to cheat. when idw doesn't bother trying to cheat the camera like 90% of the time, it just looks weird. most of idw artist claim that they're just "too good at looking at references".
image.png

conclusion:
idw is a mistake and comic canon being included in spinoff games is the beginning of a dark age era for sonic as a whole. forget about shadow 05, sonic 06 or sonic boom. flynn and gigi's infestation is getting out out hand.

Right, I forgot that Eggman didn't have a vaccine for the zombie virus, making the whole arc even dumber. Not sure if it's funny or sad that the most successful Sonic works lately are movies that are retreads of classic stories, with nothing new other than the Netflix show, which sucked horribly.

2- "only i can defeat eggman/sonic" cliche
This is bullshit but I love it, anyways
eggman revealing that he has no backup plan for the infection and is doing it for the "megalolz" because IDW is written by Ian "Watkins" Flynn
400 IQ at work.
4- crying dykes
Yeeeeeeaaah. Just how much hate mail does the writers get over this? I really can't imagine someone just silently agreeing that lesbians (and troons) crying all the time would be decent "representation" over the years.
5- sonic refuses to punish his enemies/tries to talk it over constantly
So, what's the intended audience again? Because you can't have this third grader level of writing with an pair of insane scientists trying to kill everyone for a vanity project

For a comic set after Forces and stuffed full of melodrama, it is amusing that Knuckles and the others don't face any backlash for getting 80% of the Resistance/Restoration killed through their decisions in the events of Sonic Forces. You'd think the writers would be able to mine the events of Forces for all sorts of antagonists with bones to pick with the heroes besides Rough and Tumble stealing wispons to menace a village.

It's to make them vulnerable, I guess. Doesn't work when literally the rest of the world just shrug off the zombie arc as "yet another of Eggman's silly antics, hehe! Remember that time he flooded an entire city and possibly killed hundreds of people? And then threw a (faulty) nuke at it?"

Because there's NOTHING to do with Knuckles. Funny how the British and Archie Knuckles had more character development than the entirety of the official works put together.

Japan, presumably.
Not sure. In the jap version, allegedly, they treat the Deadly Six or whatever these morons were called as being killed off. Zavok being an illusion of the plot rock of Forces sounded like a last minute retcon.

Spongebob Acks the Troons.

Great map imo.
Oh yeah that's the no life troon that was first to max the leaderboard points. Literally did nothing but live stream the game all weekends it could. I think it was using nothing but meta builds as well. Now you just reminded me that I need to actually pull their twitter shit and post that shit into the troon reality threads.

It's funny because we already know damn well this Lunar guy will never return because nobody's gonna wanna tiptoe around the "all his pronouns are his name" bit.

Late, I know, but Tails is still using that WiiU pad thing? It was a mildly amusing bit in Colors but Tails using a computer that's literally half his size is just dumb. Even in '06 they had playing card sized devices that could emit holograms.

what do you expect, Sonic is one of the least consistent settings I've ever seen, even Mario makes more sense and all the hills and mountains dance to the beat in that universe.
