This is the first time in years I feel like I can safely get hyped for a Sonic game, Sonic Mania at least, it's hard to get hyped for a game trailer that's just cg with no gameplay, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't interest in seeing where Project 2017 goes.

Dear god, the twitch stream is cancer. Literally Memes AND people whining about Sonic Adventure 3. Then again i'm hyped for Sonic Mania. I LOVED Christian Whitehead's work on Sonic CD.

Pretty much this. Christian Whitehead did an amazing job at porting Sonic CD without pissing off autists and puritans, since every port of Sonic CD had lag and visual problems. Also adding in the choice of using the JP/EU or USA soundtrack was a good move. He also did a good job on porting Sonic 2 to mobile and even adding in and finishing the Hidden Palace Zone for people to enjoy.

While I stayed up until 1AM for this cringy as fuck stream, im at least hyped at a 2D sonic game actually looking like a classic sonic game and not Sonic 4 which was 3D and felt out of place. Now the question is, since they're going for Genesis graphics, are they going to do 16 bit tunes or go with a shit soundtrack like Sonic 4.

Looks somewhat fun I guess but one thing I find sad is that the only way Sega can get Sonic to even slightly appeal to people is endlessly pandering to nostalgia.
They've spent the whole last decade making cringeworthy games that tried new things, so throughout this decade they thought the only way to remedy this is by doing a complete 180 and rehashing ideas from the very short glory days of the early 90s. It loses its touch after a while doesn't it?
Compare it to Mario. Each Mario game introduced something new while at the same time keeping the core gameplay intact, and people love them. Even a more divisive game like Super Mario Sunshine isn't considered to be utterly awful.
There's just no way to make Sonic work.

Basically Sega has stopped caring about Sonic. They make far more money off Warhammer IPs, Company of Heroes, and one of the biggest consistant cash cows in gaming, Football Manager.

I'm 90% sure they spent more on advertising Warhammer Total War than they did the entire 25th Anniversary Sonic Event. I wouldn't actually be surprised if Totinos footed the entire bill tbh.

To me, the problem with the concepts they did between Adventure 1 and Lost World isn't that they were trying new concepts. As ridiculous as a lot of them sound, each of them have some inkling of potential that could have made them decent games. The problem is that the execution of all of those concepts were half baked, at best.

These guys pretty much sum up Sonic perfectly.

Still waiting for him to work on Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Only if it's like the Sonic 3 Complete hack. That was amazing.

Here's a lengthy (But very informative) video showing the first level of every Sonic game and it's history as to how well Sonic is doing at any given point in time. Inaccuracies aside, it's pretty good. It also points out that Sonic isn't damned to mediocrity by default and has many moments where they come close to greatness, but the series is one of the most mismanaged in gaming history.

Anyway, I wish it the best, especially considering who they got working on this game. Also, we don't need a Sonic Adventure 3. Those games look pretty dated.

Late, I know, but I just watched a bit of that conference. Good fucking god, what a shit show. That one time they actually gain some interest for a Sonic game, Mania looks really good, and knowing how it's running on the same engine as the nice STHCD/2 ports for Android/iOS, and having a kick ass OST so far, they absolutely fuck it up with a clusterfuck conference. It really goes to show how SEGA cannot stop fucking up. They've been doing it since the Dreamcast era and they'll never stop.
