Posted about it a bit a long time ago, but the boxmystery.com saga from 2010 was my favorite. Dude named Tikiman shows up out of nowhere and gets a ton of goons to send him $30+ each for blind boxes in the mail. Some are suspicious, but they get ignored. Tikiman promises great things, and even a grand prize of a speedboat.

Eventually the boxes show up and it's literally just junk from a guy's apartment. Pens, scratched DVDs, gas station keychains, office supplies etc. The boxes were being mailed from a school office or something. Tikiman got permabanned and the mods locked the thread before he got doxed and they stopped any goons from pursuing him. Sorry, no revenge allowed, and no refunds either.

Goons never got their speedboat.

Thread here but you need an account to see it.

The fabulous promised prizes:

It's only a 7 page thread and it's well worth the read. Boxes start arriving on page 2.

This is gold too:

Why yes, that's a mod threatening to perma the $10 account of a guy who just took a boatload of gullible goons for $30+ apiece.

I'm sure he was terrified at the prospect.

What were some of these scams? Any good reading material for the toilet?

Besides the ones already mentioned, there was Brother Aziz, a gay fat Muslim who claimed to be an elite hacker leading an elite hacker ring but couldn’t afford a new pair of pants for a job interview. In true goon fashion, a bunch of goons donated a lot of money, something like a couple thousand dollars. Brother Aziz then disappeared.

Even recently, Koala’s March wanted people to give her money for a new laptop so she can use it for work. In another thread, she said she wanted a computer that can play GTA5 on the highest settings. Of course, if you put two and two together, you are obviously a racist.

Both these scams were led by persyns of colyr so you had goons who overdonated and questioning these scams was racist. It was easy pickings to rip off these goons.

Ha ha, that was Koala's March SECOND Scam. Her first scam was trying to setup a fund from goon donations to help out marginalized PoC goons. Who would determine who were the PoC that needed the most help? Why Koala's March of course! She expected goons to donate money directly to her and then she would divide out the funds as she saw fit. The FYAD thread making fun of her was the only time in the last 10 years that FYAD actually had some humor. I believe the lasting quote was something along the lines "Koala's March proves that every now and then you really do need white people driving at the wheel".

Funniest about these scams was always when all the scammed goons just tried to echo-chamber away all the doubt re: if they just got taken by somebody a lot more clever by them or not. The goons that then always eventually proudly proclaimed "Yeah well I guess I got scammed but actually I got out on top for <reasons>" where always my favorite. Bonus points if some of the doubters early on got probated or banned for their trouble. It always showed this whole oppressive culture and the hive mind of that entire forum so well.

Goons were also frequent marks for shady kickstarters. A lot of "indie devs" signed up to post in Games about their fundraisers around 2013-2014. Barclay 2 is a prominent one, but there were a few others. There was some obvious joke stuff, like Bear Simulator, but one that sticks in my memory is Confederate Express.

Confederate Express was pitched as a depthy mission-based tactical RPG in a post-apocalyptic setting. The kickstarter had some impressive pixel art and the showcase of the lightning engine looked promising. It even had a playable demo. It ended up raising close to 40k. The dev account on SA went dark shortly after, and updates ceased. An goon did something that would likely be verboten on modern SA: he googled the name listed on the kickstarter. It turned out that Maksym Pashanin had quite the interesting history! Maksym and his brother Denys were making headlines in Palm Springs, CA for having booked a condo on AirBnB and refusing to leave. They exploited a loophole in AirBnB's terms of use combined with California law to legally squat in some poor woman's home for a really long time. They eventually got booted out, and AirBnB overhauled their policies to ensure that never happened again. Confederate Express went quiet, and goons assumed they were the victims of a really elaborate grift.

Weirdly enough in reminding myself of the details of this story I saw that updates resumed in 2018 and the game is now on steam, albeit as some kind of shitty looking third person shooter instead of the 16-bit X-Com that was promised. Just another example of how a goon and xir's money can easily be parted.

I’d love to join as a misogynist, black muslim man with a soundcloud and just vomit out “spotlight uh moonlight uh beat woman cos they have no rights uh” and other kinds of bullshit to see how they’ll react. Alas, giving lowtax money is haram.

Yeah, when Kickstarter was new, goons flocked to it like flies on shit.

I got taken for a ride by a kickstarter once, and decided I'd never back another one. Pointing this out on SA, of course, led to several goons jumping down my throat as if I had said a horrible thing, giving me replies like "Quit whining, of course not all of them are going to finish", like I should be happy about throwing my money around everywhere, expecting most of it to land in the pockets of scam artists.

That whole forum overall has a seriously fucked up mantra about blowing money. I wish this meme were around 10 years ago:

dont ask questions just consume product and then get excited for next product.JPG

Because that is Something Awful (especially the Games forum) in a fucking nutshell.

Doobie's dog house was pretty funny in retrospect. Goons gave $10,000 to a literal walking southerner stereotype (GRR CHUDS!).

Also Barkley 2 is just depressing. If you crack open the game files you can tell they put effort in and it just went to hell.

Koalas Mooch's goon scams were amazing. The best scam she's pulled is convincing people she's black.

Holy lol. They unstickied and closed the Ion Fury thread after 3 pages of unadulterated tears.

What is it with these people and equating dislike or unfavorable-sounding opinions ("trans people are mentally ill") with wanting people not to exist. Or die. Or whatever.

I think these guys also ran a site after Mysterybox, I don't remember the exact name but it had boxx in the name and it was spelled with two X's.
Transgender people being mentally ill isn't a dog whistle, it's a statement.
