It's reregs. Idiots get banned and spend another tenbux.jpg until they get bored or go broke.
Not to mention, SA has a subset of users that'll pay to rereg, troll for a few posts, get permabanned, and rereg just to come back and troll, over and over and over, 10bux at a time, for years.

I wonder how many people say "well, screw this" and move on when they get banned. Seems like SA just caters to a handful of people who are just perpetually addicted to it. I know I was for a long time, SA has some kind of addictive quality that even Facebook doesn't have.

This is what I assumed. Is there a second data set that balances new accounts with bans?
There is now.

Doesn't really indicate anything striking.

What the fuck happened in 2010?
I'm more interested in 2008, when the ban rate skyrockets above the reg rate. Perhaps it was coincided with Obama's presidency and begun the website's downward spiral into blatant political censorship. It wouldn't surprise me.

Still, that's not just having users banned at a rate above them registering. That's hemorrhaging users at a rate above them registering. That doesn't even consider people who simply don't return sans ban or accounts which are registered yet never used. I wish there was a piece of folklore I could compare it to, like a king who slaughters any wife who does not produce him a set of healthy twins, only to find out that he has no more potential wives left to slaughter. But I guess Something Awful's stupidity exceeds even mythical standards.

I also lost my train of thought for a split second while writing this and forgot I wasn't talking about Neogaf.

I think that was Shark Week, where Lowtax told the mods to go ahead and ban people for stupid posting instead of probating them because too much of SA's content was getting stupid and dreary.

The bans and accounts added are not using the same vertical axis. In 2008 there were 15,000 accounts and 2,000 bans.

2008 was the McCain Toxx thread - pretty much every conservative poster on the site agreed to a permaban if Obama won the election by posting in said thread. It was a really effective way to purge the right from the site all in one go.

In 2016 there was a similar Hilary Toxx thread, and when she lost the mods refused to implement the promised permabans (saying they could keep their accounts if they donated to charity or something) because Orange Man Bad, and Lowtax had to intervene to force the mods to keep their promises - even then, they only got regular bans instead of permas (LowT probably settled for the re-reg money when in the absurd and self-inflicted position of having to negotiate with his own mods on his own site to get them enforce their own rules).

Ah, I see. I didn't notice the right axis labels, thanks.

I remember the '08 Toxxes, there were a hell of a lot more people posting in the "if Obama loses ban me" thread than the McCain thread. Even I thought about posting in the Obama thread because it was pretty clear back then who was going to win.

But there's no benefit whatsoever, so why gamble? Why would I ever toxx clause myself on that board to a bunch of nobodies who overlooked my posts unless they wanted to give me shit?

2008 was when Ozma took over as administrator too. She was in power until 2012 so oversaw that 2010 spike.

Excluding Lowtax and Fistgrrl, Ozma managed to get almost more bans than every other admin combined in the forums history in 4 years. 20% of all bans. It even looks like the 4 years she was the FAU in charge of the forums that almost half of all bans ever took place.

Lowtax runs away from his own forum even faster than he does from sobriety, honest labor, and the IRS.

So how did fau rise to power?
I might be completely wrong but iirc back in 2013 or so he was posting a lot in pyf. He had a tendency for making really spergy statistics posts about the forums and that got him noticed. I think it was after Eggplant Wizard got doxed and around the time Spanish Manlove was getting laughed at for bragging about his mensa membership. I think FAU got approached about modding and really wanted to do it.

But as I say, I might be totally wrong - I'd stopped posting by then and just used to pop into pyf to steal things from the funny pictures thread.

FAU took over after the brief period of time when there was no main mod in GBS cause Ralp got ran out on a rail for being the twat that he was. (like Genesplicer showed up once in a blue moon to be a faggot)

Pretty sure I see Spanish Manlove post in the Goon group on FB semi frequently, probably even a mod if it's him like I think it is.

Some guy named Franco (which I always heard was his first name) and his last name is def Mexican sounding.

That nigga was sucking power-dick years before that. After almost a decade of right think and fellating the right mods, he finally got the keys to the kingdom. Proof that if you suppress your gag reflex dreams can come true.
