It's somewhat true.

Although the focus was supposed to be on "comedy", there was an expectation (and a written rule) that stuff which was merely "entertaining" or "informative" contained some effort and low effort OPs used to get gassed all the time.

Rapidly moving shit post threads were always a major feature of SA, though. They just didn't tend to hang on the front page for weeks like they do now because there were always new threads being made. Both the gassing of low effort threads and the evolution of megathreads were intended at the time to keep good threads from being pushed to page 3 by white noise.

It's not worth anyone making effort threads any more because the vast majority of responses will be tweet length or less. To the extent that people effort post there at all these days, it tends to be about "serious issues" rather than stuff that's just interesting.

SA was for people who put effort into posting.
Yeah, but often in the wrong way. Like, how much of an essay with fucking citations can I make this post to prove my rightness? Not "what's the best joke I can make here?"

There were exceptions, of course, but in the end the intellectual pretensions killed the fun.

Something awful was always an unfunny circle jerk of socially retarded losers. The only reason it wasn't as apparent back then was because

1- the user base was 13-16 and that age range thinks poop is sophisticated humor

2- the echo chamber was a lot bigger.

I agree with you about the humour. It was never as funny as it thought itself to be and it definitely hasn't aged well.

For all of the "it's changed because we grew up" bullshit, it hasn't really evolved into anything better. And there are now thousands of sites you can go to if low effort, "edgy" shit-posting is your thing. The various sub-forums are all pretty insular and would probably do better on a platform like reddit.

It's just going to be an ongoing power struggle between those who want the return of "old SA" (and what that means depends a lot on their reg date), and those who want it to be a total SJW hugbox. I don't even think Lowtax actually cares which direction it goes as long as revenue increases.

I don't think you can really "how SA used to be" because that always depended on the various subforums, who was modding them at the time, and how much attention the admins gave them.

Some forums were (as far as I could tell, I wasn't a goon; I just lurked from time to time with my brother's account.) basically fine with good resources for things.

I think @Dynastia is more or less correct that we were more forgiving of faux-edgy shit couched in faux-ironic idgaf affectation when we were all teenagers. The average age of the internet's denizens is older now. It's the same reason a guy like Maddox can't maintain an audience anymore. Most of us grow out of Family Guy humor at some point too.

I only grew out of the "faux" part. I'd still read maddox if he literally harassed children until they cried, instead of just reviewing their art like a jerk.

lowtax totally isn't mad about twitter. Not mad at all!

Lowtax is feeling insecure. When SA was at his prime he had an army of goons to ddos and harass anyone that challenged him or SA. Now he’s a sad, pathetic nobody that can’t even get verified on twitter and is repeatedly owned by admins in his own forum.

Oh man, I never knew what ended up coming of that, if anything. I only followed the first thread or so. Between SA and SS having multiple threads, Doobie himself joining both forums, frog dogs, team frogout vs. the bad froggers, vent hoods, goons talking about making pilgrimages, etc it was such a convoluted shitshow.

And in the end none of it mattered anyway because a funeral home (I think?) bought the dog house property to bulldoze for a bigger parking lot or something.

His kickstarter from 2013 is still up if anyone wants a laugh.

Thank you, whoever gave up Christmas, so we might see 4 oz of frozen crinkle fries sold for $1.80.

What ever happened to SoundMonkey? He wanted the donations to be legit and regularly talked shop to Doobie unironically. He eventually turned heel and tried to pretend it was all a joke after it all came crashing down. Typical spineless faggot.

Is lowtax planning a new career in activism?
