That much is true. His parents are "well off", so he's not likely to ever end up on the streets.

Oh, I believe that much. The fact that he's mooching off of them, I dunno about that. He's not making a fortune off of SA but afaik he still lives in Buttfuck, Missouri. I doubt he really needs a whole lot to live that wild Midwest lifestyle.

And for a lark I googled "Kyanka attorney Lee's Summit MO" and it returns multiple links to a Carol Kyanka who is licensed to practice law in MO, whether if this is Mommytax or just some random woman with an unfortunate last name, well, that is between you and your meds.

That article left a lot of shit out. How about for years, the board was run by humorless cat ladies and sex offenders? Hard to produce interesting content when you have the equivalent of HR running through your posts to see if it met their standards of humor or not.
We all know SA's current state isn't pulling punches when it comes to fanning the flames of hatred on anyone who disagrees with their party line.

But come on people, this is just a blurb about the history of the website and not every reader on the internet is obsessed with picking a side. Did anyone really expect that Lowtax should bow down and pillory himself to anyone willing to interview him, no matter how much we dislike the impact of his management style?

A misanthrope was an annoying shit and the forum can only get better from that loss
He didn't get banned for his posting though. He requested the 10,000 hr ban in solidarity with his friends. His friends were banned because Zen Death Robot thinks that they are Trump supporters, even though they aren't. The whole place is now the fiefdom of a mental defective and it's extremely pathetic.

In 2002 the original Games forum moderators (fun fact: the Games forum was solely created to keep console war threads out of GBS) were chosen to be one Sony fanboy (qirex), one Nintendo fanboy (Hamburgler), and one Microsoft fanboy (I can't remember this one, I think it was Winson Paine?).
Was it DanSTC or did he come shortly thereafter?

lol Lowtax is never going to reclaim his site from the army of faggots he gave it to.

SA forum members don't give a fuck about him any more. He can't even post a thread without it dying after a few pages. He seems to be hellbent in becoming a success at things no one wants him to do like video game streamer and YouTube lets player.

Also he repeated that stupid fucking thing about Kir threatening to rape his kid. It was a MUSIC REFERENCE you stupid fuck. It really must have had a big effect on him for him to bring it up so many times, and never in the context of him finding out it was a joke.

Congratulations, KiR, you "won."

It wasn't Dan, I think he was in the first wave of replacements. Hamburgler stepped down not too long after to go on tour with Onyx (seriously. He was their webmaster and maybe their biggest fan)

Edit: This Onyx: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onyx_(American_band)

Yes. The hip-hop band. And yes, Hamburgler is about as white as you can imagine a Nintendo fanboy Games forum moderator might be.

That's a pretty good article. As someone who has browsed SA since 2005 I still think there is a huge demand for a more moderated and more intelligent space for discussion. I think Rich is going about it the wrong way by trying too hard to sculpt and influence the culture of the boards. Don't ban people for their opinions, just ban them for being exceptional or unfunny.

Echoing what proteus said, the problem has been the mods rather than lowtax, when it came to "sculpting and influencing the culture of the boards", but I don't think it was deliberate. I think it was largely incidental as a matter of that being the end result of having mods who lean a certain way overall and don't have any particular drive or principal to act in good faith or be neutral, which is where you get a lot of the insane transphobia bans, for example.

Lowtax's only real attempts to shape things were when he and his wife finally responded to the cries of "The D&D mods are leftist babies who can't help but coddle the most insane users and stifle discussion of all other points of view".

The biggest example of that sort of thing being the case were the hellthreads which were effectively unmoderated containment threads where people could bring up all the controversial or weird points that would get you probated or banned if posted in D&D(or anywhere else really). And in the case of the one that Ralp and Fluffieduckie torpedoed, it was a matter of those threads being safe as long as they were out of the reach of those sorts of shitty mods who use their position to punish people for their ideas, Ralp at least should be commended for not having a meltdown immediately, but when he did have his it was spectacular(multiple 100,000 hour bans for being a "Garbate Pit bigot").

It was a good introduction to SA and their history for a person like me who never visited the website and didn't know anything about them. The only reason I even heard of "lowtax" is because he did a rifftrax with the old mst3k crew one time iirc.

One thing that was very silly about it though was how lowtax kept insisting he was some kind of internet prophet and acting like he was the only person who wasn't predicting some kinda beautiful, egalitarian future for the internet. Maybe the early 20 something person who interviewed him for the article might believe that, idk.

Even before 1999, before they started SA there was a lot of negativity and total crap online. In 96-97, there were plenty websites for various hate groups, websites completely composed of dirty jokes, dirty chatrooms, and of course, pornography. There were news reports on television at the time talking about how families should monitor their children's internet access, lest they get into the "bad side" of online.

Well, I think he was referring to the "golden goose" ideal a lot of old media had of the internet at the time. Back in the late 90s the internet was going to be this magical wonderland where everyone would solve their problems peacefully because for the first time anyone could talk to anyone else with no barrier. Sure, groups like the KKK had websites, but that would obviously get drowned out in the sea of peace and love. I'd say anyone in 1998 who saw the internet as a coming shitstorm was probably being at least a little forward-thinking, so I'll give him credit for that one.

He's certainly correct when he brings up the fact that you can't make any kind of joke anymore without being hammered with some scarlet letter labeling like misogynist or alt-right or whatever. And he's referring to his own site as much as he is to any other guilty party. I don't even blame him for getting tired of being overwhelmed by all of that bullshit a decade ago. Problem is now he's not doing anything to fix it.

What was the "really horrible shit" which drove @Lowtax off the forums?
His own or these?

His own, he had an ex-gf named Integral who was legit crazy and was a mod for a time, but when they started to have issues she aired some dirty laundry in public and stirred drama. Then the whole Team Barry thin went down leading to the birth of SS as he and his new wife were expecting a child so he just stepped out and handed it off to the Cat Lady Clan of Icequeen, Ozma(fat) and some other broad, as well as some shitty mods and admins who aren't memorable enough to list.

If you mean from here, Shmorky's ex showed up and after she accused him of molesting his own kids in a psychotic break a year or two back, dude just walks away anytime she shows up anywhere and I can't say I blame him for that. But we were also pretty openly critical while trying to be fair, and as his own mods and admins melted down over him posting here he just kinda gave up

What was the dirty laundry?

I was referring to Something Awful rather than here.
