I've only read a little bit of this thread so this question could be easy to answer if I go back far enough but how and when did Something Awful become a corner-stone for the people it used to make fun of (Troons and furries, for example) to foster? I've read that Something Awful used to be a "bastion of edgy" or had a culture of no fucks given and that they do whatever they want. Even with that description, that "era" of Something Awful was only in fruition for, from one claim at least, 1999 to 2004. That's pretty surprising to me since I still see later years like 2006 or 2008 being designated as the "old internet" where it was still the norm to be edgy as possible. That makes me think that Something Awful's shittiness now was actually being fostered even back during Web 1.0's swan song years, albeit to a much lesser degree. The early 2010's Internet with the SJW's, early troons, and being butthurt over every tiny thing is when the damage became really clear and that it would be "hard to stop" (I.e, Lowtax and the jannies stopped caring at the point and either fucked off or became the garbage) so that's when the trannies, furries, and faggots came in to make Something Awful their own.

It was most active probably a decade ago now but did anyone else frequent whatever thread it was that focused on China and all the crazy shit that goes on in it? There was one guy who would regularly tell stories about his time there since he married a Chinese woman. It was where I first learned the terms "kan re nao" (the practice of not interfering and watching something interesting AKA just watching someone get flattened by a truck instead of telling the driver to stop) and "gutter oil" (low-grade fats skimmed off the top of literal sewage for the purpose of cooking). The thread was a blast but that was all before the Trump election and I doubt a thread as openly honest and critical of a communist country would still be up in the same state today, if at all.

The China thread still exists, it's just not as active. This is partially because the people and sexpats who used to post stories from China no longer live there since the covid lockdowns. Also according to them, China has gotten more hostile to foreigners, the police routinely raid gaijin bars to drug test everyone, and if your hair sample shows you smoked pot last month in the US then you still get deported.

Also the thread is more tighly moderated for racism, so no more mocking digusting social practices as orientalism. Criticizing the CCP is also dicey because it summons people from the c-spam subforum to come in and post whataboutisms about America.

(C-spam is their socialist discourse subforum for tankies and people denying Uyghur genocide)

Fuck I really liked the china thread and yeah it was about a decade ago.

It started as weird photos in china thread.

This lead to goons who lived in china, worked in china, and married to chinese talk about chinese culture.

The even recommended books like

Tales of a shanghai griffen fucking old book

Poorly made in china

and

Flying by the seat of my pants by duke nukem.

the one white dude that went around fucking chinese girls haiher was funny.

Then one hong kong goon got perma banned when china took over I remember kept talking about a five piece suit.

Old man genesplicer was a fucker and kept closing the thread because a canadian who married a chinese worked at school on a reservation for canadian indians told his class how the horse went extinct in north american and had to be reintroduced.

This was teaching agaisnt the tribes creations myths and was used as a reason to fire him, but when he said the real reason was because he was the white man. The thread was closed for "racism"

The also had a fun game with mods about the word "nong" which basically ment farmer or country jay aka a hick that doesnt understand you shouldnt shit on the street corner or spit.

mods declared the word a slur

This lead to evertime someone using the word nong a poster would austically post its definition

Then someone asked about the word nork for north koreans.

I remember starwarsbetamax fucking closed the china thread so better threads could take off.

I honestly thoughts the goons were bad about wrong think in the china thread but that was just warm up for the Ukrainian threads.

Still not as bad as when they goon cabal got FAU to delete GBS for being bad only to tell goons to go play somewhere else and they went to fyad to get chain probated.

You know you're in for a wild ride when there's a rule that you'll catch a ban for even posting that something is a scam. NYC_Tattoo tried to pass it off as "threads would get derailed if you could notify someone they're overpaying, free market!!!!" but it really led to goons posting shit for double the price of what you could/should get something for new and no one being allowed to tell them to get fucked.

Or how half the sub was people trying to sell $1,000 gift cards for $985 and no one being allowed to point out that risking $1,000 for a 95% chance of someone notifying their credit card they didn't buy that GC and getting the charge overturned, your gift card balance withdrawn, and you losing out on your $1,000 all for the sake of you 'saving' $15 was a dumb fucking deal.

The pics of the chick that looked like here doing porn is Ozmaporn.jpg, Ozmaporn2.jpg, and GrossClean.jpg (it was gross enough to be edited, the original was Gross.jpg), but they're not on there. It was a running joke at the time to pretend that the pictures really were Ozma, and that's present on the article; note the disclaimer, "...the underlying humor of these photos really lies in the fact that somebody who looks like Ozma has gotten naked in front of a camera and masturbated and well, frankly, that's just lol."

If I remember somethingsensitive lore, they were able to dox her from a pintrest board. She also bad some husband and some parent had medical debt that ate up an inheretnce or something

But yeah the CAT lady mod crew had the time to fight drama and allowed the troons infection to start

It was even better than that. Oxma (fat) had a fiance not husband. The finance's mother was dying of cancer, and Ozma(fat) was basically wishing she would transfer the house she was going to give to her son before cancer treatment ate all her assets, and basically wishing mom would die faster so there would be more inheritance because she wanted to buy an overpriced bugman palace in San Fransisco. Well, she couldn't buy it, she was poor and was only being paid in e-cred running SomethingAwful. She wanted her boyfriend to buy it for her with the proceeds from the sale of the house (fiancee didn't want to sell the house).
edit: I remember there was a post about her trying to convince her fiancee's mother to enter hospice instead of fighting cancer so she'd die faster and cheaper, leaving more money for Ozma(fat).

Essentially whining her boyfriend's mom was taking too long to die because the longer she took to die the less money there was to have her boyfriend buy a house in a place she wanted to live, then she would marry him and be entitled to half of it.

Ozma(fat) is a really horrible person on every level.

I believe the last BigPeeler ban was for a picture of Jessica Alba sitting in a gokart with a stain on her jeans that looked like she pissed herself.

Not sure why that warranted a ban really it was just a lowbrow funny picture.
