SA was banning pretty much all the common internet phrases for some inexplicable reason. Even if they were things normal people also said, like "Wow. Just wow."
The reason was that threads would end up getting pages of replies that were simply "Wow. Just wow." or "Pak chooie unf!" or "Just punch her in the cunt!" or "Why you throw chip?" or other equally inane postcount++ garbage memes.

Of course, the rules were never consistently enforced, so some threads ended up like that anyway.

The main thing is that they would enforce these rules for any post that included the phrases, no matter how much other content was in the post.

god you make me feel old

Back in 2000 they had rules about AIM speak, and making an effort to write with spelling and grammer, honestly that rule improved the site back in 2000 I mean.

I remember mods would be all "learn to use the shift key"

but the fight over the word retarded was crazy and I remember some goons would get slapped for calling that FTC woman ugly while other goons would also call her ugly and be fine with it.

I love the female mod you called herself CIS and got demonded for it.

anyway has jeff post is state of the goon address yet?

I think my favorite was banning threads that start with "So," which sounds really dumb until you see the screenshot that's an entire page of threads starting that way. In the beginning SA was trying to he slightly more high brow than the rest of the internet at the time. Since pretty much every forum was filled with illiterate retards, they enforced stupid rules that got worse with the pay wall. A lot of rules changes and forum philosophy was just Dick trying to make more money and make people annoy him less.

I suppose most of the truly smart, funny and original people of Something Awful's early days eventually grew up and became more involved in real life, resulting in them eventually posting less or not at all. Whereas the worst losers never got a real life and began to dominate the forums with their mixture of tediousness and growing bitterness about the world. Their lives didn't turn out the way they hoped, and in their eyes, it's the world's fault, not theirs, and they had (and still have) the forums to repeat the same boring opinions over and over again, since they have nothing but time.

An army of unfuckable losers posting whatever vapid thoughts cross their minds 24/7 don't exactly create an environment for humour and smart edginess. This makes the forums even less appealing for interesting people with lives, so in the end, only the tedious losers were left.

And this is how current day's Something Awful came to pass.

OMWWTFBBQ

the last sucessful goon thing I know of and it been what 10 years was welcome to nightvale, they had a gbs thread that got banish to the creative sub forum.

The last thread I enjoyed was the gbs china thread of course that thread had to be shut down multiple time for racism.

They fight over the correct to talk about the ukraine war, fuck those people live in different realities

Oh I would blow dane cook ate a ban for posting some dude on x commeting on P diddy molesting justine bebbie

less bots, more children and teenagers who also didn't have credit cards. The late 90s, early 00s web was filled with kids who just saw matrix/hackers and were incredibly annoying to deal with to the point that they just about overran some places. These were the ones using the "family computer", if you remember that particular concept. Knuckle-dragging normies shitting places up from their smartphones, proud of their ignorance, weren't quite a thing yet, neither were 3rd world posters and glowies on a mission to sabotage all discourse.

Look at "soyteens", that's kinda what a lot of the early web forums and comment sections were, in a way. The ten bux credit card fee kept them out. It was probably the only good idea Lowtax ever had. It's hard to imagine now as the internet is the central focus of corporations and governments and just about everyone is using it now, but the demographics were quite different.

Lol, that's pretty much how Japanese people look at the Heian age themselves, as well. It's when the emperor moved to Kyoto and a recognizable Japanese culture took off, as opposed to a proto-Korean/proto-japanese hybrid culture amidst ancestors of the Ainu and similar indigenous peoples which the Japanese considered "primitive" up until very recently.

But Something Awful mods won't let small things like actual insight or knowledge come between themselves and the punishment of what they perceive as wrong think.

I can only imagine is some secret discord or irc mods have a blanket of fear that some up and coomer will see them allowing racism and get them demonded and thus remove the only meaning they have in their lives.

Just like that hong kong goon in the gbs china thread who talked about jews stabing gards in the camps, in regards to some shit going down there.
