I think those numbers were for new regs and reregs, not custom avatars and all the bullshit regulars buy plus advertising and other sources of income. I might be misremembering on that, so correct me if I'm wrong. Yes, SA does not really bring in any new users so there's not much money to be made there, but there's plenty to be milked from the hardcore remainders I'm guessing.

Lowtax spent nearly a full decade milking SA - under the threat of "SA will die without your money!" only for the users to find out that Lowtax was just frivolously spending 99% of all funds.

People smelled the blood in the water and started milking what remained of SA. The old Admin fundraised a few thousands for "Christmas" and then left. The mods all started "funds" for "projects" (like a gaming PC for KM for 'work'). People took up donations for spin off sites - people with sad stories (Voidburger, etc) or layoffs shilled their patreon - I think even Lowtax's widow rolled in with a GFM during the trial and after his death.

This after a full decade of goon projects (Black Mesa sweatshirts, hot dog stands, and so on) that all asked for money and never/barely delivered.

The only thing that Jeff of YOSPOS has going for him is he's the first person not to aggressively ask SA's decimated userbase for money in literally 20 years.
