Koos originated from FYAD, so everything is steeped in a deep layer of irony to be sure. As far as I can remember, his schtick has always been a very sincere & earnest posting tone, which allows him to fly under the radar in the grey forums. I always figured his D&D modship was meant as a subtle troll; pedantically forcing them to follow their own rules of debate & punishing them for not providing citations, etc
 
Jeff also has the lingering stench floating around him of how he scrounged together the cash to buy the site: crypto. Goons fucking hate crypto and even though I do too I don't give a fuck at the end of the day but for them there's this always present understanding that all the shit that they routinely hate on and make fun of and try to organise gay little boycotts around is the reason that Jeff was able to seize control of the forum for their absentee internet father.

If he had bought the site and opened registration and loosened if not outright ditched the draconian moderation I think he could have rode a wave and taken SA into the next century and then monetised the resulting flood using all manner of modern methods. Instead he's content to have spent his internet pogs on an already rotten, empty estate sinking deeper and deeper into the quicksand of irrelevance.

Jeff does not care about the money but he clearly fully expected to be the "Savior of Something Awful, hero of the forums" for getting the site away from Lowtax.

Goons did not give a single shit (outside of performative wokeness) and are the worst kind of people - because they complained about Lowtax for a decade but never stopped posting on Something Awful.com, never migrating to anywhere better even after Lowtax himself tried to migrate to KF.

So Jeffrey is the "Savior of Something Awful" but he's learning that maybe Something Awful wasn't worth saving and that Lowtax's apathy was well earned.
 
If Jeffery was smart he'd monetize the whole "posting enemy" autism that runs rampant on SA by letting people pay to probate people they don't like. Sell probation protection as well. The site would collapse into a frothing troon rage orgy, but you'd make a quick buck.

What stood out to me about this was the revelation that people are now openly posting lists of their enemies on the forum. Back in my day (get off my lawn you kids) that was an insta-ban and not even the most rabid Communists would do it. Now it's apparently so common that mods are saying "well you shouldn't really do that but you do you I guess". Somehow the place has got even more toxic than when I left 6 or 7 years ago.

Again, like the enemies lists - in 2010ish, Koos Group was one of the deranged permabanned posters (along with Kyoon_, MATT DAMON and our very own resident brain-damaged schizo Dare) who would register dozens of sock/alt accounts and get banned over and over. Now he's a mod of D&D. Talk about lunatics taking over the asylum. I think it's a sign of SA's shrinking user base and the same "insanity distillation*" that affects ResetERA, they're desperate to keep poster numbers up and mod candidates are few and far between.

*Insanity Distillation - a process whereby a politically radical forum (left or right) bans or drives away sane and moderate posters and enters a purity spiral, boiling off all the sanity until only the most deranged people are left. ResetERA will ban you for "dismissing concerns of *ism", literally banning you for disagreeing with the biggest lunatics on the site who think every little thing is incontrovertible evidence of tranny/black genocide, meaning that only the conspiracy theorists are left.

Whats going on with resetera anyway? Does it new corporate owners have plan for it?

I keep looking at how SA has less than 5000 viewers/users but tons of mods. That are hostile to any growth of the user base

I was (fortunately) never a goon and hardly even lurked SA, so excuse my newfaggottry: what do you mean by "lists of their enemies on the forum"? Do I understand it correctly that some goons make posts listing other goons they don't like or want banned?

Yes. Waay back in the day there was a rule about no "call outs" as in no flaming for beefing with fellow goons.

Now it used to be people would idle in IRC (now its discord). When someone would express a bad opinion they would organize a plan to shut a thread down.

Basically people would dog pile into a thread shit post, and then a mod would show up saying "wow this place is shit gas the thread"

So the forum is down to alittle over 3000 active users shit is now more in the open. So a goon will say the people posting any other UKraine war thread are communist/nazi/fascists' (this weirdly applies to all sides) So they do the concern trolling thing about posting blood lust. Remember you can call for elon the chud to die, but enjoying twitter videos of people being blow up is blood lust!

But yes goons keep lists and shit.

In addition to @northstar747 's post, one of the Mods, I believe it was Abe (because SA's software lacked the ability to board/thread bans) had a spread sheet of "ban on sight" posters. A literal spreadsheet of posting enemies. He wasn't the only one, just the only one who openly admitted it.

Add into this that Mods had petty grudges, and they would also go find excuses to punish people who were offending their toadies and orbiters.

I have never posted on SA, but if had not quite 10 years ago, there was an instance I know of a poster getting long-term probed for a post that was two years old because they dared talk smack to a Mod's pet brownnoser. Rather than probe for the post where their pet was being laughed at, the Mod dug deep into the thread history and probed that ancient post so it wouldn't look like their pet had gone crying to daddy to settle an internet slap fight - it also hid the punishment from anyone following the thead. The probe was like a week, thus ensuring the Mod pet got in the last word on the exchange (making it look like they had one and the other poster had pussed out)and the topic had changed - if they had tried to resume the argument, that poster would have been probed again for some variation of "threadshitting by reopening the topic after the thread has moved on".

It's amazing (and very embarrassing) that KF, a forum that has been the subject of DDoS and propaganda campaigns, is de-listed from search engines and can't be directly linked from most social media platforms, now has more active users than Something Awful. Right now there are over 600 people logged into KF, in the middle of a DDoS attack and where it's the early hours of the morning in the USA and the middle of a working weekday in Europe. That KF is comfortably bigger than SA is mind-blowing - SA would regularly have tens of thousands of people logged in. Kiwis post more than Goons too.

It always felt like one of those deals where the people who were part of the clique were posting there fucking constantly, sometimes hundreds of posts a day. If you weren't prepared to sink that kind of time into it, you were never going to get all their shit.

Like, I've been shitposting for over 25 years at this point, and I've never been able to comprehend how the kind of people who post constantly in BYOB and FYAD, and indeed other forums, have the time to post as much as they do and build these full blown friendships with the people on the forum and stuff. Even when I was in high school in the late 90s/early 2000s and I didn't have a girlfriend, a job, or any real responsibility, I don't think I've ever gone above an average of seven or eight posts a day on Internet forums. At some point you do something like go hang out with a buddy or play vidya or watch TV or whatever. One has to assume none of them have jobs, hobbies or friends outside posting on their forum. Their entire life revolves around their little Internet clique. It's quite depressing when you think about it. If they took half the time they spent on forums and just used it to read comics, watch trash TV or play Pico-8 games or some other activity that is not that mentally taxing and requires very little effort, their lives most likely improve dramatically.
