Another one of those thousand cuts was EVE Online. The Goon group there made it a requirement to have a SA Forums account to be eligible for membership. This drew in thousands of people from 2006-2010.
Those people weren't always the type that could roll with the punches and make or even understand jokes so you just had countless people showing up to shit all over the forums because they didn't join for the content of the forums.
It would be like if Null came out with his own cryptocurrency and thousands of people registered specifically to get some of the coins. A lot of them might never leave and just sit around complaining about the actual content here. In Something Awful's case they had a sympathetic administrator to give them what they wanted.
I never really interacted with any EVE goons; at least ones who were screeching (well, screeching about anything but Autism Space Bux). The marxists weren't interested in a free-market simulation game, and the snowflakes are too triggered by high-stakes Excel.
Goonfleet always sucked though - they were just the most organized & persistent, with enough dumb goon noobie slave labor and autistic spendpigs to make up for any deficiencies in skill or tactics. This is why their shit has gotten pushed all the way in once those resources started to dry up.
edit:
Take, for example, that great moment in Eve lore when Goonfleet destroyed the first super-dreadnought, eliminating (at the time) $10,000 real-dollars worth of ship & causing the implosion of the alliance that built it.
What they don't tell you is that they didn't just lose a lot of GoonSwarm (noobie kamakaze ships), they lost about double that in capital ships from Goonfleet & allies taking it down.
They also leave off that the alliance that built it had been imploded before the ship was finished; the corporation that "owned" the dreadnought had backstabbed some other members by kicking them out.
About the only thing they did that wasn't PR propaganda covering for super gay shit was dissolving BoB. And even then, a lot of their tactics - like blowing up their own ships to profit from bounties - were tactics they stole from other corps.
in conclusion: @Lowtax is a faggot & pillhead.
Guys, seriously, "nerd culture" is irrelevant. Nobody is giving Tumblrinas a significant voice in politics.
Yes and no.
Yes, Tumblrinas aren't getting a voice in politics but they are influencing corporations and media - normie media and products.
They are also evidence of a trickle down effect; 10-20 years ago, any group as rabid and obviously insane as most of the woke tumblr crowd would have been as politically untouchable as the KKK.
