A few days ago the topic of people making violent threats came up in QCS. If someone says that they want to strangle a senator who is pushing legislation that they hate, is it a dumb joke or a serious threat?
At the end of the thread Lowtax came in and posted this:
(snip)
The Secret Service has visited lowtax before and, well, they don't seem to value humor the way we do here at Something Awful Industries. It's better for everyone if we can avoid this situation going forward.
So please - don't do this, at all. If in the course of a discussion about politics, you post something that looks like a death threat, we are going to come down hard. I understand if this means you're going back to Gaia Online where jokes are legal, but it is what is best for our community.
Now, we also recognize that there is a lot of gray area in between someone writing that they have a rifle and want to kill a politician and, for example, generally hoping that someone suffers a heart attack or catches COVID. Both are ghoulish, but only one might get the secret service involved. We recognize that political figures can cause a lot of harm, and that this harm threatens the lives and livelihoods of millions, including many posters here. We're going to try very hard to read these gray areas and not permaban people for shit that really falls under political speech, but anything involving violence or death is going to get a very hard look. Please don't put us in the position of having to look at a post and figure out if it actually constitutes a threat, even a vague one. The list of politicians you'd like dead isn't exactly funny, informative, or interesting and those sorts of posts will not be missed.
We have no desire to go back and re-litigate old posts under this standard. Deciding if posts from weeks, months, or years ago run afoul of this is a huge waste of everyone's time. Please, let's all stop doing this now, for everyone's sake. If you find something that someone did before today that is particularly concerning to you, PM or email an admin.
