In early 2013, United Front was working on a sequel to Sleeping Dogs. The game would have picked up after the original game, once again following the exploits of (formerly undercover) officer Wei Shen. This time, Shen would be joined by a "conflicted, corrupt partner" named Henry Fang, as they explored China's Pearl River Delta. The player would have the ability to arrest any NPC in the world, and influence a branching storyline that swapped between both Shen and Fang. The game was said to be United Front's most ambitious game, which would have included a second screen app for mobile devices that would be able to interact with the world of the game; playing as inspector Jane Teng, the player would "manage the police force and try to control territories" from a mobile device. If owned, choices in the mobile app influenced what would happen in the game world, the gangs in control, etc. For instance, a summoned police patrol on a mobile device would appear in-game as a helicopter flying by. The hope was to create an enjoyable free-to-play mobile game, pointing players towards the console game. Plans for the sequel were eventually scrapped in late 2013 before the project went into production.[100]

I would've loved to played this potential sequel.

I think Macau would have been an amazing setting for another Sleeping Dogs - basically Hong Kong meets Las Vegas with Portuguese culture - or Singapore if as some sort of period piece (tied into the Malayan Emergency).

Edit: FML I just remembered Whore of the Orient and I'm depressed now.
1930s Shanghai really was the most interesting place in the world.

The developers were going to make a Sleeping Dogs 2 but Square Enix wanted an online as a service game so they made Triad Wars. They canceled the game when it was still in beta because of the lack of interest amongst players. I would've liked to have tried it out.

I imagine it would have been like GTA Online with factions. Where if your faction was at the top of the leaderboard maybe you would get xp and money. They could have lobbies where you can form teams and fight rival gangs, maybe have the ability to put hits on other gang members for a reward. They could have temporary alliances and rivalries between the factions that would have bonuses. It would have been something nice to fight other players in a street fight.

Ya know when I picked this up again recently I felt like I was playing a Chinese bootleg Yakuza but that's doing both games/series a massive disservice. It's got charm and I really should bother playing and beating it again.

Square Enix really fucked up by denying them a proper sequel. Thankfully Avengers backfired to show them how shit live service games are.
>imagine thinking Squeenix learned their lesson
Lol lmao even. Did you even pay attention to the shit they've done, even before and afterwards? Y'know, shit like selling NFTs back in late-2021/early-2022? And that that fiasco, they keep releasing shitty products that even the diehard Squeenix consoomers are jumping ship.

The True Crime games, where Sleeping Dogs originated from (and I remember when it was billed as a True Crime game), had lots of great ideas that, due to console limitations and ill-thought out execution, could have really went somewhere that stood out from other crime sandbox games. The morality system of New York and climbing up the ranks of the department was novel. The random crimes system, whilst I am sure it was not the first, is now the standard for many games. It was also non-PC in a way only a PS2 game could be.

A Sleeping Dogs 2 is desperately needed. The side missions and activities were far better than the ones given in GTA 5.

I completely forgot about true crime. I always liked the kung fu thing during fist fights where you stun a guy and then input a button combo for a special move.

I really should play the DLC of that game. It was a really good action romp in a setting that is different enough from other games of that genre. The only downside is that once guns were introduced, the melee system took a backseat, despite being way more fun.

So what you're saying is, we need a Yakuza/Sleeping Dogs crossover.

Edit: And throw in Shenmue as well. That game needs some love.

I played Traid Wars and I liked it, but it was just a glorified Facebook game that was very unoptimized with all the problems of being a Facebook game (Timers, Caps, Resets)

You mean you didn't like doing yoga in your crime simulator?
