Slay the Spire - Ascend a big tower and kill stuff because you can. Is responsible for the "roguelike deckbuilder" fad

same reason people enjoy making Rube Goldberg machines in Magic the Gathering is why, its not hard.
No I understand why people like the game, I've never "grok'd" the meta within the game because I never get the right combination of relics/cards to make a known theme that kills high ascension. I only get to the final boss by the skin of my teeth on any given run. It's a failing of mine where I don't predict and pick the right stuff, or I lean towards one build but end up getting the shit for another and basically can't run either one. Which is part of why I like Hearthstone BGs or other autochesses, they allow one to pivot mid-match better.

the trick everyone fucks up is simple.

Take less, get rid of more, just like in MTG, consistency and speed is better than a bunch of cool tricks.

This is the way. You keep the deck as small and focused/well-synergised as possible unless you find a way to consistently draw and play MANY cards each turn, which can happen but don't bank on it (either through synergies that make cards free, or give you lots of extra energy to play with and extra draws etc.). Don't ever take a card just because it sounds good, think about how it interacts with all of your current cards, and then also how it affects the odds of each card being drawn going forward. A hypothetically good card reducing the odds of your actually good combination cards coming up together is a bad thing. A tiny deck where everything combos itself perfectly suddenly makes the game feel too easy, and that is the greatest feeling there is in STS.

My Silent run died on boss 2. Checking out The Regent tonight.

It's also critical to consider which cards help you in the fights you've got upcoming. "Null" at first glance felt really awkward in the Defect deck I was building at the time, but it was the only thing I was offered in Act 1 to help me deal enough damage to the act boss, and it eventually led to me winning the run. If something enables you to combat tough, important enemy encounters, it becomes better, even if it's a bit clunky still.

This is the way.
I am going to bash your skull in with your own [Fossilized Helix], mando. "Pitch cards, dont take trash," YOU THINK I DONT KNOW THAT??? ALL I AM DEALT IS GRADE-A FUCKING GARBAGE!!!! I LOVE TAKING NO CARDS AND DYING TO ELITES ON FLOOR 1 BECAUSE I GOT NOTHING YIPPEEEEE!!!1! LOSING DISCARD GOLD TO HEALING IS F-U-N FUN!!!!

Please tell me you play a factory game so I can demand a screenshot & mercilessly mock conveyor or train layouts. I hate this fucking game so much, I dont know why I keep trying to make combos that beat nigger thieves and bird larpers in floor 2.

Nigger if you can't enjoy it whilst losing 90% of the time you're playing the wrong damn game! After a certain level of experience it becomes mostly memorisation of the enemy patterns, planning for the most troublesome ones from the start and having contingency plans for the couple that will hard counter whatever build you go with. You do need to play for a hell of a long time to approach maybe even a 50% win rate, so you gotta be okay with losing very often. If not, time for another game.

I get that. I'm an average math brain at best, and often I'm playing buzzed up as well and I refuse to ever look at any meta guides for these type of games. It's either I figure it out or I don't. Eventually you'll figure it out. Same with Balatro really. The key is to figure out how to mitigate the luck and adjust at each stage of the run. In STS usually you need damage first floor, defense 2nd, and then whatever is needed for the final boss (donuts and the cat are relatively straightforward, timelord can be more tricky). For Donuts obviously a card like corpse explosion is OP and for Cat you want to avoid too many power cards. Time lord you need to have balanced hands, which as someone noted can be the hardest thing to manage in the game.

I like to do custom runs as Ironclad.
Endless
Draft 15 cards
Flight
Time dilation
Heirloom

I try to get searing blow as high as I can smithing it. I don't think its overkill.

How old were you when Time Lord raped your shiv build for the first time? I remember mine like it was yesterday.

>still loses to the heart
I completely forgot about the heart. I must have repressed it. I know I beat it once...

You don't fight the Heart in Endless, you just go back to the start and do it again, this time against harder enemies.

But yes, pumping up Searing Blade to absurd levels is valid. I like to have a draw card in there too, either Shrug it off or Battle Trance so beat the black blob enemies that respawn unless you beat them all in the same turn. Very disappointed that Searing Blade isn't in StS2.

I want to like the sovereign blade mechanic but its just worse osty. Costs 2 to osty's 1-0, cant block attacks, and doesn't ignore status effects. I think regent would definitely benefit from significant buffs

Sly decks on the Silent have been good, even if my games have been stingy with the draw x discard y card rewards. Turtling with poison deck is still the most successful strat for me.

Necrobinder is fun but I haven't had a strong summon run yet. My winning run with him was End of Days for some serious aoe clear(gets past the stupid exoskeleton and other damage limiting enemies) and then Squeeze on a massive osty attack deck for single target dmg.

The regents forge is a pretty boring "number go up" mechanic so far. Had a winning run where I got the forge power that builds up every turn and a few forge skills. Got the 2x hit power. Pretty easy to build it up to 100+ dmg with vulnerable but only because I hit full synergy. It was rough leading up to it.

I've definitely had to change my pathing. In STS1 I would take the path with the most elites and actually found ascension 1 with more elites to be easier because of the snowballing with relics. In this game however I'm having more success by skipping some elites and battles in general. I don't think it's the elites themselves that are the problem but instead the regular battles that sometimes are even more difficult than the elites so there's less safety when you're making your way to or from an elite.

He's the coolest character with the worst balance.

I love all the stuff that breaks the "card memory" stuff that you can't do in MTG.

you could never have a card that says another card gains attack and defense permanently that isn't even in play.

Agreed. I really wanna like regent but he seems to lack strength and synergy. The stars mechanics are cool but it feels like they should either be less costly or more rewarding, and forge should be changed to differentiate it from Necrobinder's summon mechanic cause they're functionally identical (build up big number, build up big damage) except Osty cones with a free blowjob and a million 0 cost cards.

God that mechanic pissed me off the first time. There are ways to beat him with shiv builds (need vulnerable for starters) but it isn't something you know before facing him. As a Silent main I always want the donuts, too easy usually.

The attack that cost 1 energy, gives you 2 stars and returns to the top of your draw pile cascades quickly, Shining Strike it's called. Pulling it early made stacking stars cards viable and carried me to boss 3. Definitely try that one. It's a rare card, but they seem to appear more commonly now I think.

Regent is the only character that hasn't clicked with me yet, but Necrobinder is actually my favorite and I think you summed it up well. Osty feels very friendly and rewarding to make use of.

It's a great card but he also gets cards that get bonuses for being top of his draw pile and it has negative synergy with those. Honestly, I think something worth trying is just stacking that up with the lance card that has bonus damage for every star cost card. Just as many copies as you can hold.
