might be a reach, but... there’s no lighting on the left piece? there’s different shades of brown on her face and it looks like they just presented the lightest one. they also picked the darkest shade from the hair, while picking the lightest shade from the right pic’s hair.

The issue to me is that the picture they used on the left isn't the best quality. I can't see the full image. and even if I couldn't the artist in the left still used bright red highlights for the picture and toned every other part of the piece. If it was just the skin color yeah, but if they went to change the entire piece I don't consider it whitewashing as other pictures of Marina have had that pastel effect before.

The artist clearly had some intention for the picture and while, yes the execution could've been better, I highly doubt their a super racist person who's never seen black people before in their life. My issue is the length people believe that these artists are mega-racist for even the slightest tone shift.

I'm not going to deny the concept of whitewashing but it's definitely not here in my opinion.

Certainly interesting, but the problem is her ilk tend to go too far in the other direction and turn Sinosphere Asians into hook-nosed African-Indians.

NTR fantasies in cartoon fandoms on Tumblr have always been pretty weird, most of them involve the husband (Richard most commonly) either getting left by the wife, or if they REALLY hate him, dying for some reason and the wife having been revealed she has comp het and she's actually a uwu lesbian, ignoring the possibility that she could be bisexual

I'm a little confused by the note that Asian American artists drawing themselves with single-lined eyes is a major issue, followed by the "and this is why we need more Asian representation in (western) media" bit at the end. Pretty much everyone of Asian descent I've ever met typically falls back on the media produced by their own respective country/culture, and it's not like that material is in short supply in the age of the internet.

Wouldn't it be more effective to try and highlight the media made by those countries so that their work gets more attention rather than telling multi-billion dollar conglomerates to cater to you?
 
It's not just a question in lighting with those Splatoon pictures, it's also a style/technique. Muted, pastel and watercolor are meant to have light tones. Having a really dark brown on a very light background would just make the character looks bad, having all the attention on itself. It's not impossible to make it look good but it would be more difficult.
Marina isn't super dark though, she is like in the middle range of black skins tones. So the people drawing her could darkern her more without affecting the overall mood, but yes, it also means lighting change her tone more than it would on a really dark person.

Remember joulejay? I'm pretty sure it's been weeks since people called her out on her bullshit but she keep sperging angrily about lighting and POC EVERY.FUCKING.DAY. and more people are feeding off her shit everyday.

a thread on a ridicilous tumblrina complaining about composition and technique on certain pictures and accusing artists of "whitewashing"? like apparently having pastel tones aren't allowed on drawings if we paint the POC character on tumblr? then again, tumblrina art isn't better, if not WORSE than the mere "witewiashiiiiing OGM" they call.
