In this case it's to probably make the character 'redeemable' in some way. The purer uwu side of the Layton fandom have this weird hate boner for Clive for some reason, even if he 1)swore to redeem himself and 2)other Layton antagonists have arguably done the same or near worse than what Clive did for pettier reasons. Even one of them (Descole) had no redemption arc of any kind, but the fandom loves him because 'he's gay', even if in canon he had a wife and child (which could mean he's bi or something but I don't want to open that can of worms on this thread).
But no Clive's a white male better make him a kawaii transboy or a character that can never be redeemed uwu.
