I love how tumblr is offended by everything, but think it's OK to portray fictional anime characters with religious historical figure on the same picture and call Him "product of whitewashing". If that was Muslim related they would go REEEEKT.

Ryuk is more or less some creature that isn't human so in reality, anyone can play him. As for Light though, the character is pretty much being thrown in an American adaption that manged to also change the race of his nemesis, L. And Makoto is pretty much just a cyborg so she could legit be anything before she became a brain in a government sex bot.

Spoiler: The movie apparently used whitewashing as a plot point or something.

Funny thing though with the GITS movie, the Major was Japanese until she got kidnapped and put in a robo-Caucasian body. Still got complaints though because they didn't show her Asian face but then again, that could end up playing the angle of missing identity.

As for Jesus, the dude has literally been portrayed as different ethnicities. Outside of black and white, he's also appeared as Native American and Chinese.
